You may not have heard the words “freshman fifteen” before, but they are very important for students who are entering university(大學(xué)). A freshman is a first-year college student. “Fifteen” means fifteen pounds---the fifteen pounds added to a student’s weight in his or her first year. There are a number of reasons why first-year university students gain(增加) weight; but it’s encouraging to know that freshmen don’t have to add these harmful fifteen pounds.
Mistakes choosing food
University kitchens serve(供應(yīng)) many kinds of food. Some students choose unhealthy food, because now their patents are not nearby to help them choose. Some students visit the kitchen many times while studying. Late at night, some students get harmful fast food such as fish and chips with Coke to drink. Students also have less time for walking, running, and doing sports because of their schoolwork.
Eating right
If you’re careful, you don’t have to add fifteen pounds. Here are some ideas:
Think more about what you eat.
Eat plenty of vegetables and healthy meats.
Don’t eat desserts full of sugar; have fruit after dinner.
Try not to eat so much unhealthy food while you study.
It’s all right to have a little fast food sometimes---but not often.
Write down the foods you eat.
Walk, run, do sports---move and you will feel better!
Remember that the “freshman fifteen” can happen to anyone. Talk to your friends about it. Together, try to eat healthy food and not to eat unhealthy food. Walking, running, and playing sports is always more fun with friends. Help each other and you can have a healthy and happy freshman year.

What will the car be like in the future? Maybe we can sit in a car that can drive itself.
About 40 years ago, scientists from the United States started to develop self-driving cars (無(wú)人駕駛汽車). The most famous recent one was made by Google in 2009. There are cameras and radars (雷達(dá)) on the top of the car. They allow the computer in the car to draw a 3D map of the environment. Chinese scientists have also successfully developed a self-driving car. The car made a trip from Changsha to Wuhan.
Is a self-driving car safe? A recent study shows that robots make safer drivers than humans. If only 10% of cars on the street are self-driving, they will save 1,000 lives (生命) every year. If 90% of vehicles (交通工具) are self-driving, 21,700 lives will be saved a year. However, a self-driving car is expensive and each costs about $100,000. So it is impossible to be very popular in the near future.

Tigers are terrible animals, but a cat is a cute animal.    As a mother, the Chinese-American writer Amy Chua is just a tiger . Her book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (《虎媽戰(zhàn)歌》), tells us how she gives her two children education.    She says that being strict is the only way to train a child’s talent. Her kids had to obey the following rules. To begin with, her kids weren’t allowed to watch TV or play computer games. Then, they were not allowed to “ hang out ” with other kids after school. They had to be the top students in their class. And they had to practice the piano and the violin for hours every day. Of course, she believes this has brought a lot of problems for herself and her kids. But she doesn’t mind because her kids have become great. If you are one of those who want to know how to increase your vocabulary, there are some ways you may find useful. In fact, it is not that difficult to learn new words, but to remember them for a lifetime seems not to be so easy.
To make it easier, you can try word associations(聯(lián)想). Try to find a connection between a new word and things or people you know. For example, if your neighbour is an unselfish person who cares about the needs of other people, think about this person every time you see the word, and very soon you'll start actively using it.
Try to use the words you learn as often as possible. Perhaps you are not sure which situations they should be used in, or whether you pronounce(發(fā)音) them correctly, but practice is the best way to understand that. It is not enough to find out the meaning of a word. You should hammer (敲打) it into your mind by using it in actual conversations in everyday life.
Also, it may be helpful to know the meaning of the word roots, prefixes (前綴) and suffixes (后綴), especially if they have a Greek or Latin origin(起源). Even if you meet a long unfamiliar word, it will be easy to know its meaning if you know the general meaning of its parts.  For example, if you see the word "philanthropy", it won't be difficult to surmise what it means if you know that "anthropo" means "human" and "philo" means "loving". Not only can ancient Greek and Latin be helpful, but a number of modern languages as well. So, if you speak French,  Italian, Spanish or Portuguese, guess the meaning of an unfamiliar English word if it sounds like  a word from another language you know.
小題1: Which of the following old sayings can show the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.Every dog has his day.
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Every coin has two sides.
D.Where there is a will there is a way.

D.paying more attention to words that have a Greek or Latin origin.
小題3:The underlined word "surmise" in the last paragraph means_______.
A.guessB.suggest
C.proveD.remember
小題4: what's the writer's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To tell us how he or she learnt English well.
B.To explain why it is not hard to learn new words.
C.To prove that learning new words can be really fun.
D.To tell us some good ways of remembering new words.

Scientists have made the world’s first human-sheep----with the body of a sheep and half-human organs(器官). Amazing, but true. The sheep is15percent human and 85 percent sheep. The breakthrough(突破)makes it possible to use animal organs in human bodies in the future. Professor Esmail Zanjani of University of Nevada, US, has spent seven years And over $9 million on the work. Computers can injure you. Most other injuries happen suddenly. For example, if you fall off a bike and break your arms, it happens very quickly. But computer injuries happen slowly.
You probably know how to ride a bike safely. Now learn to use a computer safely.
Your eyes
Too much light can injure your eyes, so never sit too close to a computer screen. Your eyes should be at least 50cm from the screen. Remember to look away from it sometimes. This gives your eyes a rest.
When you use a computer, the window should be on your left or your right. If it is behind you, the light will reflect(反射) on the screen. If the window is in front of you, the sun and the screen will both shine into your eyes.
Your hands and wrists(手腕)
Hand and wrist injuries can happen because the hands and wrists are moved in the same way hundreds of times. If you use a keyboard for a long time, follow these rules: ①Rest your wrists on something. ②Keep your elbows at the same height as the keyboard. ③Stop sometimes and exercise your hands, wrists and fingers in a different way.
Your back
Some people sit for many hours in front of a computer. If you sit in the wrong way, you can injure your back or your neck. So you should sit with your back straight. The top part of the screen should be in front of your eyes. Your forearms, wrists, hands and the upper part of your legs should all the parallel (平行) to the floor.
