Bats are amazing animals. There are many kinds of them. Most bats are black or grey in colour. And they have wings, too. Many people believed that bats couldn’t see. In fact, Bats can always find their way around very well. Usually, bats live in caves and trees. They can fly to their homes from far away. Some scientists said, “Bats can see with their ears.” Is it right? Most bats make a sound. The sound is too low for our ears to hear. They screech(尖叫) when they move around, and the echoes(回聲)of these cries come back to their ears. In this way, they are able to tell where walls and other things are. Bats go out to eat at night. In the daytime they hang close together in their caves, trees or other dark places. Only when evening comes, they begin to come out and look for food, In the morning they come home to sleep until the next night. Some people think of bats as bad animals. In fact, they are very useful animals. Most of them catch bad insects(昆蟲)for food. Some bats eat flowers and fruit as well.

Do you know what a resolution is? It’s a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people. For example, “Mom, I promise I’m going to tidy my room when I get back from school.” However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year’s resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making resolutions. When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.
There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person.
Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you — will you make any next year?
小題1:Is a resolution a promise you make to other people?
小題2:When do people often make resolutions?
小題3:Who do some people tell their resolutions to?
小題4:How many kinds of resolutions are mentioned in the second paragraph?
小題5:Why do people hardly keep their resolutions?

Gift giving is different from culture to culture and person to person.
When giving gifts, sometimes color is important. For example, for many Chinese people around the world, red is a lucky color, and people often like to pack gifts in this color. However, did you know that in Korea ,red is a color of death. That is why you should not pack gifts in this color if you are giving a gift to a Korean person.
What about western countries? In western countries, the color of packing paper is not really important. But color does matter when giving flowers, especially roses. You should not give red roses to a western person you don't know very well because they are a symbol (象征) of love. You could give yellow roses instead as these are a symbol of friendship. You could also send pink roses as gifts to say thank you.
What other things should you remember when giving gifts to someone from a different culture? Well, one thing you should keep in mind is the person’s religion (宗教).When choosing a gift for a Muslim (回教徒的)or Jewish (猶太族的)friend, you should never get food including pork or things made from pigskin.Another thing that you should not get for a Muslim person is alcohol(酒).

Do you love cheese? If you do, this new survey will make you happy. According to the survey, cheese is good for teeth and can protect people from getting cavities (蛀牙) . The survey is made by a group of scientists from the Academy of General Dentistry, an organization from the USA. The scientists find that eating cheese can make the mouth’s PH rise. And the higher the mouth’s PH is, the less likely it is that a person gets cavities. That’s why cheese is good for tooth health.
In order to do the survey, the scientists invited 68 children between 12-15 years old to join the test. They tested the mouth’s PH of the children at first. Then they divided the children into three groups. One group of children ate some cheese, another group of children ate sugar-free yoghurt and the last group of children drank a glass of milk. After that, the scientists tested the mouth’s PH of all the children for several times.
The scientists found that the mouth’s PH of the last two groups of children didn’t change, but the mouth’s PH of children from the first group rose greatly. Besides, the scientists also found that cheese could create a protective layer (保護層) on teeth. The layer could protect the teeth from getting hurt by many bad things.
