Writing a good story is no easy task. What’s the secret? Mo Yan, the Nobel Prize winner in literature(文學(xué))in 2012, believes his success comes from a large amount of reading.

Mo was born into a farming family in a village in Shandong Province. He grew up listening to folk stories about gods, spirits and foxes. Those stories later became the inspiration (靈感) for Mo’s writing.

Mo left school at the age of 12 and started to work in the fields. Although he was tired after his daily hard work, Mo was always hungry for books. However, there were very few in the village. He read his older brother’s textbooks and even dictionaries. He helped others with farm work in exchange for books.

“When I finished reading all the books around, I thought I was the most knowledgeable man in the world,” he told Xinhua.

After Mo left his hometown and joined the army in 1976, he began to read widely, including works by Lu Xun and many other famous writers.

He studied from these writers but did not copy them. Instead, he developed his own style. “I grew up in an environment filled with folk culture. It enters my novels whenever I pick up a pen. This has influenced, even decided, my style,” Mo told a group of reporters in his hometown shortly after he won the award in 2012.

As the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize in literature(文學(xué)), the organization spoke highly of his works. They described his writing as a mixture (混合體) of fantasy and reality, combining historical and social perspectives (看法).

科目:初中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2016屆江蘇揚(yáng)州江都區(qū)七校聯(lián)誼九年級(jí)上學(xué)期期中英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

You will have a lot of reading to do in this grade this year. You can do more of it in less time if you learn to read rapidly. Perhaps you have been told about some habits which keep a person from reading fast and have been strongly asked to break those which you might have.

Do you still have any of these bad habits? Check yourself by answering “yes” or “no” to these questions.

(1)Do you move your lips(嘴唇) when reading silently?

(2)Do you point to words with your finger as you read?

(3)Do you move your head from side to side as you read?

(4)Do you read one word at a time?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, start at once to break the habit. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them,or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips move, you will know it and can stop them.

If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you won’t have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place your chin(下巴)in one hand and hold your head still(靜止不動(dòng)的).

If you read no more than one or two three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take in more words at each glance(一瞥) as your eyes travel across the lines of words.

Even if you do rather fast now, you can learn to read even faster. As you probably have been

told, the fast reading is to take in whole groups of words as each glance. Read in thought groups and force(強(qiáng)迫)your eyes along the lines of words as fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these things will be able to read faster

2.When you read, ________________ .

A.don’t keep your head still

B.don’t hold your books with your hands

3.If you learn to read fast, __________________.

A.you can read more in less time

B.you can write faster
