As I grow up, I gradually know that life plays a very important role in my education I really wanted to achieve. What I mean is that life can teach you things no one else can. Luckily for you, it’s time to have lessons of life. Pay attention and you can know what I call the school of life.
Use Your Head
You have to be smart to survive (生存) in this world. Anytime you need to make a move, stop and think. Obviously there will be times when you need to take action first, but if you’ve been taking the time to plan, you’ll always make the right choice. Fail to plan, plan to fail.
Set Your Goals
In my team, if you don’t finish the job well, we will fire you. Your goals should be on building a basic of solid and complete work. Make certain a list of what you have to do and start with the biggest and most difficult task. The key here is goals.
Respect Your Superiors (上級)
Your boss is in his position for a reason, no matter what you think of him. If he’s not the best one, be patient—he’ll be out of there soon. In the meantime, you have to respect him as your superior. That means following orders and closing your mouth. If you don’t respect your boss, how will you expect the people under you to do the same?
Keep Your Cool
You should never let your emotions (情緒) control you. You should learn to keep calm. Never lose your cool when dealing in business, or it will ruin the whole thing.
The school of life can be hard, but if you’re smart and play your cards right, you can come out with an A+. Just treat every situation as a learning experience. I hope you’ve studied.

Wang Jiaming from Beijing Chenjinglun High School says he is a lucky boy. He’s happy that he’s sitting the senior high school entrance exam (中考) in 2014 instead of 2016.
On Oct 22, Beijing Municipal Commission of Education (北京市教委) announced that, from 2016, the English scores in the senior high school entrance exam will be reduced from 120 to 100. Of the 100 points, the listening ability scores will increase to 50. Meanwhile, the points for Chinese will increase from 120 to 150.
“The change won’t affect me. I feel so lucky because English is my strongest subject,” said Wang.
Why such a change? It places the importance on Chinese in our study, and reduces students’ stress, said Li Yi, spokesman of the commission.
“The change will also push us to pay attention to the practical usage (運用) of English,” said Li. “Students will be encouraged to learn to understand English menus and read English news on mobile phones.”
There isn’t news that other cities will have the same change. But several places are making changes to English tests in the college entrance exams. For example, Shandong is considering taking out the listening part of the English exam in its college entrance exams.
But, “being tested for less points doesn’t mean the subject can be taken lightly,” Bai Ping wrote in China Daily.
English has long been the world’s most commonly used language. Former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji once said: “In a globalizing economy (全球經(jīng)濟), if you cannot communicate with foreigners, how can one be part of the world economy?”
Wang Jiaming said he understood the change.
“Chinese, not English, is our mother tongue (母語),” he said. “But still, I think English is both interesting and useful.”
小題1:In the Beijing senior high school entrance exam of 2016, _____.
A.the English scores will be cut down to 100
B.the English listening ability scores will be lowered
C.the points for Chinese will be reduced by 30 points
D.the points for chemistry will increase by 20 points
小題2: The underlined phrase “can be taken lightly” in this sentence “being tested for less points  doesn’t mean the subject can be taken lightly,” is closest in meaning to “_____________”.
A.can be taken out
B.can be paid less attention to
C.can be taken a close look at
D.can take the place of Chinese
小題3:What is the main purpose of the change?
A.To encourage students to learn how to order meals in English.
B.To make students learn to read English news on mobile phones.
C.To ask students to prepare for the college entrance exam.
D.To make students pay more attention to learning Chinese.
小題4:What does Bai Ping think of the reforms (改革)?
A.They make students spend less time on English.
B.They make it harder to get a high score.
C.Studying English is still important for the students.
D.English is both interesting and useful.

We are all busy talking about and using the Internet. But how many of us know the history of the Internet?
Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was set up in the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer networks(網(wǎng)絡(luò))didn't work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system(系統(tǒng)) had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way computer network system would keep on working all the time 。
At first the Internet was only used by the government (政府), but in the early 1970s; universities, hospitals and banks were allowed to use it, too. However, computers were still very expensive and yet Internet was difficult to use. By the start of the 1990s, computers became cheaper and easier to use. Scientists had also developed (開發(fā)) software (軟件) that made "surfing" the Internet easier.

The world would be a very different place if someone hadn’t invented the lift. There would be few, if any, high-rise buildings because people would refuse to climb many stairs. By the time workers reached their offices on the top floors of a tower building, it would be time to go home – if they were not too tired for the long walk down!

The first lift that we know about was used by the Greek scientist, Archimedes, in about 230 BC. It was a simple place that could be pulled up and down with a rope. A lift like this was used much later in the 12th century by priests who lived on top of a mountain at Metereo in Greece. Because they were afraid of killers, the priests had not built any stairs up the mountain. The only way up was by lift, which priests worked from the top of the mountain.
A few hundred years later, a Frenchman, Villayer, invented a ‘flying chair’ which used a rope and a place. A number of rich people had these ‘flying chairs’ built in their homes, including Queen Anne of England in Windsor Castle and Louis XVI of France at Versailles. Unluckily, Louis’ daughter was badly hurt when using one of the chairs, and Villayer ran away, afraid that he would be punished.
The main problem for lift engineers was that either humans or animals were needed to pull the ropes. This problem was not worked out until the discovery of steam power. But even steam powered lifts were not always safe because they also used ropes which sometimes broke. If the rope broke - which it sometimes did - the lift fell to the ground and people in it were killed or hurt. This problem worked out in 1854 when an American, Elisha Otis, invented something which stopped the lift from falling if the rope broke. At first Otis lifts were used only in factories, then in 1857 he built one in a large New York store. Now lifts use electric power and are completely safe. They also travel very quickly. Some lifts travel faster than 60 kilometers an hour.

小題4:Steam power meant that ________  .
A.they did not need a living thing to pull the ropes

If you are writing or studying, it makes much difference where the light comes from. People use        and pens every day. They have to be very careful about the way of the light because the light shines on their work.
Every        gets its light either from daylight        the window        from the lamps or electricity,        no matter what kind of light it is, the way it shines towards our books or work is very important to the eyes.
Take a book and sit with your        toward the window, and try to read. Your shadow(影子) falls all over the page and makes it        for your eyes as if you were in a        room.
Now turn around and face the window. The page is        shadow again, while the bright light is in your eyes.
Try sitting with your        side toward the window. This is very good for        , but if you were writing, the shadow        fall across the page and bother you        .
There is another way – sit        your left side to the window. Now everything is perfect for writing as well.
Whatever kind of light is in the room, the rule about the right way to sit is        the same.

You’ve probably heard of working dogs that help police officers, or horses that help farmers. Did you know that carrier pigeons(信鴿)can be trained to help people too? Here are some examples.
Mailman
Carrier pigeons can be trained to carry messages to people. The note is placed into a small can. The can is tied to the pigeon’s leg. Then the pigeon flies off with the note.
Lifeguard
From high up in the sky, specially trained pigeons can find orange life jackets in the ocean. Sometimes it is difficult for humans to find people lost at sea, especially when the weather is bad. However, pigeons can fly quickly over a large area of water to look for people.
Spy
Many years ago, carrier pigeons were used to help our country during wars (戰(zhàn)爭). “Spy pigeons” had small cameras that were tied to their feet. As a pigeon flew over enemy (敵人)land, the camera took photos of the land below. This would allow our soldiers to see where the enemies were and what they were doing.
