“Fish stories” are stories of the greatest fish that a fisherman has almost caught, but for some reason, the fish always get away. Usually, these stories do not have much truth to them. One of the biggest fish stories in history was about a whale.
In 1891, a ship hunting for whales in the South Atlantic Ocean found a very large whale. While the hunters were trying to kill the whale, it sank two small boats. One man drowned, and another man, James Bartley, was lost in the ocean. However, after the hunters finally killed the whale, they cut open the whale’s stomach and found Mr Bartley inside. He was not dead!
Several weeks later, Mr Bartley seemed to have gotten over his terrible experience. The only thing he could remember was that while he was inside the whale, it was very hot. The liquid (液體) from the whale’s stomach had turned all of his skin snow white. Mr Bartley had to live with the effect from the whale for the rest of his life.
Today, many people have heard about the strange experience of Mr Bartley and do not buy it. Not one real fact has been found to prove that the events ever took place described by the sailors. No scientist or newspaper reporter was ever able to talk to Mr Bartley, and all of the stories told in magazines about Mr Bartley’s experience were explained by other sailors on the boat. Mr Bartley was probably not even a real person at all.
In 1928, after the captain (船長) of the whaling ship had died, one man asked the captain’s wife about Mr Bartley’s story. The wife said that no man who had sailed on her husband’s ship was ever swallowed by a whale.
However, this has not stopped James Bartley’s story from being repeated, and many people today still believe that it is true.

At a nation’s saddest moment, its greatest heroes are born.
On September 11th, 2001, many police officers and government officials in America worked day and night to save lives from the big fire at the World Trade Centre. And in Japan, after the serious earthquake, a group of workers showed their courage.
The earthquake on March 11th made Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant(福島核電站) turn off and stop its protective cooling systems. And later, a fire broke out. Workers were told that the plant’s radiation(輻射) could be harmful to human health. Hundreds of workers left the plant quickly. When US student Olivia Priedeman, 17, woke up one morning, she thought she had had a dream about making plans with a friend.
But it wasn’t a dream. Her phone showed that during the night, Priedeman had read a text message from her friend. She did it while she was fast asleep.
Reading and sending text messages while asleep—called “sleep texting”—is an unusual sleep behaviour, similar to sleepwalking. It’s also a growing concern(關心的事) among doctors: young people can’t live without their cell phones.
One in three teenagers sends more than 100 text messages a day, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. And at least four out of five teenagers said they sleep with their phone on or near their bed.
Elizabeth Dowdell, a professor at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, has studied sleeping texting. She said that having a phone nearby all night is a big part of the problem.
Andrew Stiehm, a sleep medicine expert with Allina Health in Minnesota, agrees. It’s possible for the part of the brain that controls motor skills (動作技能) to wake up, while the part of the brain that controls memory and judgment(判斷) may be still asleep. That’s why some people can perform basic movements ---such as walking, talking, texting or even driving—while they’re sleeping. Some of Dowdell’s students said that they’re disturbed by their nighttime texting behavior. But because sleep texting is unconscious, it’s a difficult habit to break. Dowdell said she knows of some students who wear socks on their hands to keep themselves from texting.
Marjorie Hogan, a doctor at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, suggests keeping all electronic devices(電子設備) outside the bedroom at certain times.

Evolution (進化) has changed our bodies and faces over thousands of years, and it’s still happening. Here’s how experts predict (預測) what people will be like in 1,000 years.
We’ll be about 1.83~2.13 metres tall because of improved nutrition (營養(yǎng)) and medical science. Our arms and fingers will get longer to reduce the need to reach too far.
We’ll have smaller brains, maybe because computers will help us memorize and think most of the things.
There will be larger eyes and smaller mouths. And there may be fewer teeth as softer food needs less chewing and biting. We could even get our nutrition from liquids or pills in the future.
We can expect other great changes too. Everyone will have the same shape of noses. That’s because climate will have less influence on noses with the help of air conditioning and central heating. Besides, we will have more wrinkles (皺紋) as a result of looking at our electronic devices.
We also may end up with saggy (松弛的) necks because extra sun will cause loose skin. And there will be darker skin as people move around the planet and races (種族) mix.
