The Tin Lizzie

It shook, rattled (嗄嗄作響), and groaned (呻吟). It wasn't pretty. It looked like a black box sitting on high, skinny wheels. But it could go anywhere, and it was cheap.

What was it? It was Henry Ford's Model-T ca-better known as the Tin Lizzie. This car was the most popular of all for nearly 20 years. It changed the American way of life forever.

Model T's were sold as fast as they were made. Eleven thousand were sold in 1908. They cost $850 each. Of course, you can't buy a new car for $850 any longer. The prices of new cars keep changing.

The line graph below shows how the average prices of American cars have been changing.

A line graph shows how something has changed. This kind of graph uses a simple line to show changes. If the line goes up, that means things have gone up in some way. If the line goes down, then something has gone down.

Suppose you want to find the average price of cars for 1977. Find 1977 at the bottom of the graph. Find the dot over the year. Then find the price across from the dot.

Use the line graph to answer the questions below.

1.What was the average price of a car in 1979?

[ ]

A.$4000.
B.$6000.
C.$8000.
D.$10000.

2.What does the line graph show about car prices?

[ ]

A.They have been going up.
B.They have been going down.
C.They have not changed.
D.They have been cut in half.

3.In what year did cars cost more than $4000 but less than $6000?

[ ]

A.1975.
B.1977.
C.1979.
D.1981.

4.Suppose you were looking for a new car in 1981. What would the average price have been?

[ ]

A.Less than $6000.
B.Less than $8000.
C.More than $8000.
D.More than $10000.

5.How did the average price of cars change from 1977 to 1979?

Increasing Your Reading Rate

Do you know that a fast reader can get the ideas better than a slow reader can? Of course, you save time by reading fast, but this is not the main reason for fast reading. The main reason is that you understand better what you are reading when you read fast.

As your eyes move along the line of print, they make fixations (注視) or pauses (停頓) . It is important that you see several words at a fixation. It is also important that your eyes leave a group of words quickly and move on to another group. The number of letters or words that you see at a fixation are called your eye span (視幅、視跨). Pay more attention to improving your rate of reading. With practice you can learn to read faster than you usually read.

The way in which you read always depends on what you are reading and for what purpose (目的) . You should know the different ways of reading so that you can apply whatever method that is necessary. Here are four ways of reading, but not all, they may increase your reading rate.

1.Skimming is an important kind of reading. This method can be used when you wish to review something that you have forgotten. You may skim to find a lost place of a statement that you have read and cannot recall. You may skim to get an idea of a story.

2.Rapid first reading and then rereading certain parts carefully is important. You may use this type of reading to study a science lesson or a history lesson.

3.You need to do careful reading and rereading sometimes. This type of reading is necessary for making an intensive study of the main subject of your school curriculum (課程), solving arithmetic problems, studying rules for playing a game, or reading directions .

4.Rapid reading is used when reading stories for enjoyment. You may also do rapid reading when reviewing material that you already know well.

The Slowest and the Fastest

The state of Florida was once almost gobbled (大吃) up by snails(蝸牛). They were giant(巨大的) snails from Africa. A visitor took some to Florida, where they spread quickly. Some of the snails were as big as a person's hand. They ate the leaves on trees and other plants. They had to be stopped, and they were. Poison killed thousands of the snails, and Florida was saved.

Catching a snail should be easier than catching any other animal. The snail is the slowest of all land animals. Its top speed is 55 yards per hour. At this speed it would take the snail about 32 hours to travel one mile. A snail only goes that fast when it's very hungry.

The bar graph below shows some other top speeds.

A bar graph has bars of different lengths, instead of pictures. This kind of graph makes it easy to compare several things quickly. To read the graph, notice where each bar ends. Then find the closest number at the bottom of the graph.

Use the bar graph about running speeds to answer the questions.

1.What is the top speed of a rabbit?

Reading Comprehension

People are wiser and can do more things than other animals because of their wonderful brains. We can talk, read, write, build houses, and invent things. Your brain has three main parts:the front brain, the hind brain, and the middle brain.

The front brain is the largest. It is gray outside and white inside. This is the part of the brain where you remember, think, and plan. With this part of your brain you make your arms and legs do what you want them to do. Here is where the messages from the eyes, ears, and nose let you see, hear, and smell. The hind brain is smaller than the front brain and is more like that of other animals. This part of the brain gives you balance and control of your muscles. You walk without tripping and skip without falling because the hind brain is doing its job. If it were not, you would lose your balance and fall over.

The middle brain is the smallest of all, but very important. It controls the beating of your heart, swallowing food, breathing, and other things you do without thinking. The middle brain is a small swelling where the brain joins the spinal cord-a large bundle of nerves in your backbone. The spinal cord is the main road to and from the brain. It comes into the middle brain bringing messages from all parts of your body. It also takes charge when some part of your body is in danger. If you touch a hot iron, the message to the spinal cord makes you pull your finger away even before you feel the pain of the burn. This is called a reflex. Nerves conned most parts of your body to the spinal cord.

1.What is the main idea of the passage?

[ ]

A.How brains make people intelligent.

B.How your brain is connected with most parts of your body.

C.How the spinal cord in your body works.

D.How each part of your brain functions.

2.Which part takes charge when one is designing his research project?

[ ]

A.The spinal cord.
B.The front brain.
C.The middle brain.
D.The hind brain.

3.The spinal card leads to your

[ ]

A.front brain
B.middle brain
C.hind brain
D.none of them

4.What does the underlined word “that” in the second paragraph refer to?

[ ]

A.The front brain.
B.The hind brain.
C.The smaller brain.
D.Other animals' brains.

5.If you cut your finger, how can your brain know it?

[ ]

A.Your heart feels it and lets your brain know.

B.When you see the blood, your eyes will send the message to your brain.

C.Your backbone collects the message and sends it to the brain.

閱讀下面短文,從短文后各題所給的四個選項(A)、(B)、(C)和(D)中,選出可以完成句子或回答所提問題的最佳選項,并填寫在題前括號內(nèi)。

It's important to learn about protecting our environment. Here is a 5R rule for us:

  1.Reduce

If you want to reduce waste, you should use things wisely(明智的). A large number of trees are being cut down to make paper. If everyone uses a little paper carelessly and throw it out, soon we would not have any trees left. Other things are also being wasted, and people don't know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary to reduce the waste.

  2.Reuse

You should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them out. Give your clothes you do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor. In a family, you may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.

  3.Recycle

Bottles, cans(罐子) and paper can easily be recycled. By doing so we save lots of time and money. For example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat(壓平) and melted(融化) and the metal things are made for new coke cans.

  4.Recover

When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten(腐爛的) apples, you have two choices: one is to throw the whole apples away, or you could cut off the rotten parts and use the good parts. In this way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.

  5.Repair

If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it. If you want to change for better ones, it is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after doing some repair. It is true that North America is a “throw-away” society, but the time has come to change our way of life so that we can protect our environment. Every one of us should try our best.

1.The “Reduce” rule mainly requires(要求) us ________.

[ ]

A.to use things wisely

B.to cut down many trees

C.to use a lot of paper

D.to throw away your old clothes

2.What's the right order(順序) of recycling coke cans?

[ ]

a.collect the used cans
b.melt them
c.smash them flat
d.send them to a factory

[ ]

A.a(chǎn) b c d
B.a(chǎn) d c b
C.d b c a
D.c a b d

3.The “Recover” rule mainly requires us ________.

[ ]

A.to throw waste things away

B.to cover waste things with earth

C.to get back the useful parts

D.to throw the whole things away

4.Which is the best way to do with your broken tables?

[ ]

A.Throwing them away.
B.Repairing them.
C.Selling them.
D.Putting them away.
