It is believed that good looks can last forever, but at nearly 600 years of age. the time is catching up with the Mona Lisa.
The famous painting that was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1505 is getting worse by the year. It is kept in the Louver Museum (盧浮宮) inFrance.
"The thin, wooden board where the Mona Lisa is painted has changed its shape." the museum said. Visitors have noticed the changes, but repairing the world's most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials (材料) the Italian artist used.
Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year. Many of them are interested in the mystery of her smile. "It is very interesting that when you're not looking at her,she seems to be smiling, and when you look at her and she stops smiling. ” said Mr Livingstone, who is working in Harvard University. "It's because direct vision (視覺) is good at picking up detail (細節(jié)) ,but not good at looking at shadows (暗影) .Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows."
However, the history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was sold toFrance's King Francis I in 1519.
In 1911,the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a worker who used to work there. He took it out of the museum and hid it under his coat. He said he planned to return it toItaly. Watching news about the environment on TV can make people feel terrible. The problems seem so big that it's difficult to imagine how persons can do anything about them. Rebecca Hosking, however, thought differently.
Rebecca is a wildlife camerawoman and she was filming a documentary for the BBC in the Pacific Ocean when she saw something that made her cry ―quite a lot of dead birds that had died because they had eaten some plastic that is thrown into the sea each year. Beaches that used to be beautiful were covered with plastic toys, bottles, pens ― every plastic thing you can think of.
Rebecca decided she had to do something. Back at home she thought about what she could do to help deal with the problem of throwaway plastic. In her hometown of Modbury, she asked local shop owners to stop using plastic bags in their shops.
Plastic bags are used everywhere in theUK. The numbers are amazing. TheUKuses are nearly 17 ,000,000,000 plastic bags each year. And the bags can take a very long time to break down because they are chemical (化學物) rather than natural,so each year the sea and the environment become more and more polluted.
To Rebecca's surprise, the shop owners agreed and Modbury became the first plastic bag free town in theUK. Instead, shops offered cotton bags or paper bags. Other towns around theUKfollowed Modbury's example and are becoming plastic bag free. It won't deal with all of the world's environment problems but it shows that there is something we can do and one person can make a big change with a strong enough decision.
