Long long ago, the animals found that men had a beautiful thing. It was a bright, burning thing. People cooked their food and kept themselves warm with it. The animals thought life would be better if they could also have this thing. So they had a meeting to talk about how to get that burning thing. The meeting lasted for a few days and in the end the animals decided to send one of them to the people to ask for a little piece of it. At first Mouse was chosen to do it, but many animals didn’t agree, because he stole things and people hated him. Then some animals thought that Panda could do it. But neither the other animals nor he himself agreed. “I’m too heavy. I can’t walk fast.” Panda said. At last many animals thought Rooster was a good one to be sent because he was good at talking and he looked beautiful. All the animals thought men would like him.

Rooster agreed to go. All the animals were glad and they had a farewell party to send him off. “I’ll try my best to bring the burning thing back to the mountains. I’m sure I can do it,” he said. He flew far and walked a long way until he came to a town of men. He went into the town and saw the burning thing. He learned that it was called “fire”. People in the town taught him how to use fire. But Rooster wasn’t good at learning and he was afraid of fire. He did not ask for a piece of it to take back to the animals, because he found that there was so much food lying around people’s houses, and he enjoyed the food and forgot what he had come for.

Men liked Rooster because he sang beautifully and he woke them up in the early morning. They let him in and out of their houses. They threw him food. So Rooster stayed with men. He felt very happy in the town and he never went back to the animals in the mountains. Years later he even forgot how fly.

The Way That Some Last Name Started

You have a first name to tell you who you are. You have a last name to tell which family you are from.

But a long, long time ago, people didn't have last names. Later they had to invent last names because there were too many Charlies, too many Roberts, and too many Marys. People started to ask, which Charlie? Which Robert? Which Mary?

So if a Charlie was a carpenter(木匠), he became Charlie Carpenter. If a Robert was a son of Peter, he became Robert Peterson. If a Mary lived near the woods, she became Mary Woods.

Do you live in a city? Do you know how cities began? Long long ago, the world had only a few thousand people. These people moved from one place to another. They moved over the land, hunting animals for food.

No one knows how or when these people learned about growing food. But when they did, their lives changed. They did not have to look for food any longer. They could stay in one place and grow it. People began to live near one another, so the first village was established. Many people came to work in the villages, and these villages became even larger.

When machines appeared, life in the villages changed again. People built factories. More and more people lived near the factories. The cities began.

Today, it’s strange that some people are moving back to small villages. Can you tell me why?

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷正(T)誤(F)。

1.People moved from place to place to hunt animals.

2.The story says,“No one knows how or when these people learned about growing food. But when they did, their lives changed.” In this sentence, the word “they” means people.

3. When machines appeared, life in the cities changed again.

4. All people like to live only in very big cities.

5. People built factories after the cities grew big.
