Before winter arrives, many kinds of birds start to fly south. People often call it migration. How much do you know about migration? Why do only some birds migrate? How do birds know when to go south? Can they find their way?
Some birds fly south because they may die from hunger if they don't do that. The woodpecker(啄木鳥),for example, doesn't need to fly south because it can find something to eat in the bark(樹皮) of the trees. But some birds eat grains(谷物). Their food disappears in winter, so they must fly south where food can still be found. But why don't they stay there forever? Perhaps they know if they stay in the south, they will eat up food there, too.
Birds seem to know when winter comes because they find that the days are getting shorter in winter. Once they leave from the north, the sun is really helpful. The sun is in different positions in the sky at different time of a day. Birds know the time of the day by watching the position of the sun. On long flights, most of the birds use stars to navigate(導(dǎo)航) their way.
The homing pigeon(信鴿) doesn't use the sun or the stars. Scientists believe that it uses the magnetic field(磁場) of the earth. One of the most amazing migrations is that of the tiny hummingbird(蜂鳥). It travels from Canada to Mexico—a long distance of over 3600 kilometers.

Imagine having an ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea. But it could happen in the near future.
Canadian biophysicist Andrew Pelling used an apple to grow a human ear. He thinks fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future.
Scientists have been trying to grow organs in labs to replace our old ones. But it‘s a hard job. In the past, scientists have used man-made materials, animal parts and even dead people as scaffolds(支架). But that has proved to be difficult and expensive.
Pelling and his team, however, found the apple to be a cheap and easy-to-use scaffolds. They first cut an apple into the shape of an ear. Then they used a special way to take out the apple‘s cells(細(xì)胞)and make it a scaffold. The team then added human cells to the apple, and watched it grow. “You can implant(移植)these scaffold into the body, and the body will send in cells and a blood supply and actually keep these things alive, ” Pelling said during a Ted Talk speech.
The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse and the mouse’s cells slowly take over the pieces of the apple.
Now Pelling is thinking of the other fruit, plants or vegetables to use.
