My interest in Chinese food started many years ago, when I had my first job. I was a young reporter for the Daily Journal in San Francisco. Our office wasn’t far from Chinatown. I usually managed to arrange my time so that I could go there at least two or three times a week for a good meal.
The first time I ever ate Chinese food I loved it. And since then, it just tastes better and better to me. The first thing I noticed was the fresh tastes of the meat and vegetable. When I learned more about the food, I began to understand why it has this special feature.
About 5000 years ago, China lost much of its wood because of over population and poor management of its forest. This loss was very bad for the country, of course, but it turned out to be very good for the food. Wood became very expensive and hard to get, so the Chinese had to learn how to use it better.
In order to use less wood in cooking, they started to cut their meat and vegetable into small pieces before they put them in the hot oil. That way, the food cooked faster and they saved their fuel. The food prepared in the manner kept its fresh flavor(風(fēng)味)--- and its this flavor that attracts people to the art of Chinese cooking.
I often wonder if the Chinese appreciated their solution to that ancient energy problem as much as I do now --- whenever I eat Chinese food.

We each have a memory(記憶力). That’s why we can still remember things after a long time. Some people have very good memories and they can easily learn many things in a short time, but some people can only remember things when they say or do them again and again. Many of the great men of the world have got surprising memories.
A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his mother language when he is a small child. He hears the sounds, remembers them and then he learns to speak. Some children are living with their parents in foreign countries. They can learn two languages as easily as one because they hear, remember and speak two languages every day. In school it is not so easy to learn a foreign language because the students have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects, too.
But your memory will become better and better when you do more and more exercises.

Much has been said and written about heroes now, mainly because many people think we have too few of them. There are many different kinds of heroes, but they usually seem to have two things. First, heroes show their great power by actions. Second, heroes can be tested by the time. Because of these good points, we need to choose our heroes carefully.
Olympic winner Jackie Joyner-Kersee tells young people to work hard. She hopes that if someone tries to copy her, it will be because she has got success by working hard. She says that a hero should affect another person’s life.
Poet Maya Angelou believes that a hero encourages people to treat others well. A hero should show politeness, courage, patience, and strength all the time. A hero should encourage others to follow him with actions, even though only in small ways.
Author Daniel Boorstin suggests that, “Celebrities are people who appear on newspapers, but heroes are people who make history.” If a person is truly a hero, he or she will not be soon forgotten.
We all need heroes. We need to be able to respect (尊重) people around us. Many times , the greatest heroes are the people we can see every day — our relatives, friends, and neighbours — who will never give up when facing difficulty. The parent who supports our family, the teacher who will make more money at another job but chooses to help students — all these people can be considered as heroes. A hero sets a good example, an example that encourages others to follow.
【小題1】Joyner-Kersee hopes that young people ___________.
A.will work hard | B.will become heroes |
C.will follow her | D.will achieve her goal |

B.many common people set examples to us |
C.heroes should be polite, patient and famous |
D.heroes have to do some great things |
A.What Heroes Do | B.Who Are Heroes |
C.How Heroes Live | D.Where Heroes are |

Being safe in your everyday life needs knowledge. If you remember the following information, your life will be much safer.
Always notice the environment around you. You shouldn’t walk alone outside. Make sure where the public phones are. If anything dangerous happens, you can find them easily.
Your bag should be carried towards the front of your body instead of putting it on your back. When a bus is full of people, it is easy enough for a thief to take away the things in the bag on your back.
If you are followed by someone you don’t know, cross the street and go to the other way, let the person understand that you know he or she is after you. Next, don’t go home at once. You are safer in the street than you are alone in your home or in a lift (電梯).
If you have to take a bus to a place far away, try to get to the stop a few minutes earlier before the bus leaves. This stops other people from studying you. On the bus, don’t sit alone. Sit behind the driver or with other people. Don’t sleep.
【小題1】 Which of the following is NOT safe when you are out?
A.Go home alone late at night. |
B.Make sure where the public phones are. |
C.Don’t get to the bus stop too early. |
D.Always notice the environment around you. |
A.run home |
B.turn back and walk towards him or her |
C.find a lift and go in |
D.cross the street and go to the other way |
A.How to cross the street. |
B.How to be safe in your everyday life. |

People are always afraid of making mistakes. But sometimes it’s not bad to make mistakes, and here is way.
At first, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things, because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try new things, how can you improve? How can you create? The simple answer is, “You can’t.” Look around you, everything you see is the result of someone trying new things.
Another good thing about mistake is this: when you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this : Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb. When he was asked how he felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learnt 10,000 things that didn’t work.
Finally, when you make a mistake, you are that much closer to success. Why? Because you have said what you should say, and you have done what you should do. Every time you make a mistake, you are closer to success. But it doesn’t mean that you can make mistakes without thinking. Instead, when you try new things you have to think them over, so that you can keep away from some unnecessary mistakes.
We shouldn’t spend all our time and money on the only one way, but use them correctly. Because our time and money are limited(有限的) .
There is an old saying, “ If you are not making mistakes, you are not trying hard enough.” So go bravely and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed.
【小題1】 If you are making a mistake, that means_______ .
A.you are careful. | B.you’re kind. |
C.you ‘re growing. | D.you know nothing. |
A.improve | B.create | C.spend | D.A and B |
A.gave up | B.invented the light bulb. |
C.invented the computer. | D.invented 10,000 new things. |
A.time | B.money | C.success | D.everything |
A.Never make mistakes. |
B.You can make mistakes without thinking. |
C.Sometimes it’s good to make mistakes. |
D.Making mistakes is terrible. |

You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?
Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears. So even if you are alone when listening to our MP3 players, you shouldn’t turn it up too high.
Take Them Off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 off and put it away. Libraries, and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense to listen on your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.
Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone(耳機(jī))and not the other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you.
【小題1】The underlined word “volume” in Paragraph Two probably means “_______”
A.the type of music | B.the amount of a sound |
C.the length of a song | D.the colour of an MP3 player |
A.the theatre won’t allow it | B.the actors will get angry |
C.others won’t hear the play well | D.we will miss part of the play |
A.school | B.libraries | C.restaurants | D.museums |
A.Music lovers | B.Music manners | C.MP3 players | D.MP3 earphones |
