This story happened when I was 11 years old. I’ll never forget it.
I was at my friend Jenny’s      after school one day. We were doing homework when a friend of Jenny’s mum’s came over to      . I don’t remember her name or even what she looked like. I      remember her hands, her voice and the lesson she taught me.
I remember her hand reaching out for mine. What     hands she had, I thought; rich, dark skin going well with the orange nail polish (指甲油). Then I heard her saying, “Oh no, that is NOT      you shake hands. Let me show you.”
After that, I just remember her voice explaining the importance of a good       , having a sense of self, looking the other person in the eye… At that moment I felt respected.
I think of her every time I meet someone      . I’m so thankful for her little lesson.
I thank her for       the time to teach me something I didn’t know. I thank her for the       that she didn’t talk down to me because I was 11 or because I didn’t       something. I thank her for instilling (灌輸) the idea that if someone doesn’t know something, don’t be afraid to share your knowledge.

Writing a good story is not an easy task. What’s the secret? Mo Yan, last year’s Nobel Prize winner in literature, believes his success comes from a large amount of reading.
Mo was born into a farming family in a village in Shandong province. He grew up listening to folk stories about gods, spirits and foxes. Those stories later became the inspiration(靈感) for Mo’s writing.
Mo left school at the age of 12 and started to work in the fields.
Although he was tired after his daily hard work, Mo was always hungry for books. However, there were very few in the village. He read his older brother’s textbooks and even dictionaries. He helped others with farm work in exchange for books.
“When I finished reading all the books around, I thought I was the most knowledgeable man in the world,” he told Xinhua.
After Mo left his hometown and joined the army in 1976, he began to read widely, including works by Lu Xun and many other famous writers. He studied from these writers but did not copy them. Instead, he developed his own style. As the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize in literature, Mo told a group of reporters in his hometown shortly after he won the award. “I grew up in an environment filled with folk culture. When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelons were expensive. One of my father's friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie's place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock (碼頭), feet dangling (搖晃), and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we'd bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, and most seed-free part — and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father's ideal of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie's wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don't take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I'd learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.
Well, I've relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That's the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.
