Many young people all over the world love to travel and see the world. Have you heard of backpackers? They are normally young people who travel cheaply with just one rucksack(背包) and comfortable walking boots. They buy local food in supermarkets to save money and at the same time become friends with local people.

Some people prefer adventure tours. Brave people may try bungee jumping from the bridge overlooking the Victoria Falls in Africa with only a rope around their legs. Some enjoy the challenge of rock climbing in the Alps in Switzerland. Others may go snowboarding in the Rocky
Mountains in the USA.
Have you ever heard of an ecotourism (生態(tài)旅游)? It rr;eans a holiday in which people come close to nature but are very careful not to damage the nature beauty or living things in the area. How can this be possible? Let's read an interview with people who enjoyed a swimming with dolphins tour.
Interviewer what was the most exciting part ofyour holiday?
Sharon from South Africa I felt excited when I heard the sound of wild dolphins approaching me in the water and then swimming directly under me. An image I will never forget.
Xavier from Portugal There were two dolphins below us swimming downwards. One stopped and looked back at me as if to say 'What are those strange beings?" Fantastic!
Interviewer Did you feel that your holiday helped local people and areas to keep their beautiful
environment?
Jane from New Zealand The hotel and the whale and dolphin watching comparues employ(雇傭) local people. They used to hunt those whales and dolphins, but now they can eam money from tourism and don't have to kill them. Not many boats are allowed at the same time so these animals aren't bothered. The boat companies also work to educate the local schools about the importance of protecting these wonderful creatures.
Helen from England I am glad they are not killing the whales and dolphins any more, but the cars and boats use fuel which could cause pollution and make the sea less clean.
Well, what do you think? Thousands of people visit the Forbidden City or the Great Wall of China every year. Which part of the world has the most nearsighted students? Just look around you–it’s East Asia. Nine in ten school leavers in major East Asian cities are nearsighted, according to the BBC. Experts say books and video games are not to blame. East Asian students, they say, aren’t getting enough sunlight.
People become nearsighted because their eyeballs grow out of shape and light entering their eyes cannot focus correctly. The body can produce a chemical called dopamine (多巴胺) to stop eyeballs from changing shape. And guess what scientists have just discovered? Sunlight can help our bodies produce more dopamine, reported AFP.
According to the study, primary school students in Singapore spend only 30 minutes outdoors every day; in Australia, by contrast, kids spend about three hours a day outside. As a result, fewer children in Australia are nearsighted–only 10 percent, compared with 90 percent in Singapore.
“Children in East Asia basically go to school... go home and stay inside. They study and they watch television,” Ian Morgan of the Australian National University told AFP.
But being a bookworm or a couch potato does not directly harm the eyes, added Morgan. “As long as they get outside, it doesn’t seem to matter how much study they do,” he explained. “There are some kids who study hard and get outside and play hard and they are generally fine. The ones who are at major risk are the ones who study hard and don’t get outside. As a result of massive (巨大的) educational pressures and the construction (構(gòu)成) of a child’s day, the amount of time they spend outside in bright light is minimized.”
Experts suggest children should stay outside for two to three hours every day. This can include time spent in the playground and walking to and from school.

D.The more dopamine a person has in their body, the better eyesight he or she has.
小題4:According to Morgan, what kind of people are most likely to suffer from nearsightedness?

When disaster (災(zāi)難) happens, you might find yourself without water, gas and electricity. You might even need to leave your home right away. So you are supposed to plan for the bad situations before the disaster comes. Here are some suggestions:
First, have a family meeting. Plan a way to get your family members together if they can't find each other after the disaster. Choose two places for everyone to go to if it isn't safe to return home. The first should be near your house. You can go there in an emergency(緊急情況) like a fire. The second meeting place should be outside your neighborhood.
Next, choose a person outside your area who can help your family get in touch with each other. After a disaster, it is often easier to communicate over a long-distance call than a local one. The person can pass messages between your family members.
Then, get a family disaster kit ready. It should include things your family needs. It can help you survive (生存) at least for three days like bread, water, medicine and things like that. Put them in a bag so you can carry it if you leave in a hurry. When doing it, remember that different people have different needs.  Include special things necessary for elderly or young members of your family.

Smartphone ,poor sight
Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smartphones. Smartphones do make our lives easier . But have you ever thought about what they mean to you eyes?
According to a study ,half of British people own smartphones and they spend an average of two hours a day using them . There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from shortsightedness since smartphones were introduced there in 1997.
Staring at smartphones for long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance ,your eyes automatically blink a certain number of times. However ,when you look at things closer  to your face ,the blinking slows down . This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using  smartphones in dark rooms before going to sleep . If you look at a bright screen while your pupils become larger ,too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma.
While you’re probably not going to stop using to your smartphone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold  your phone at least 30 continues away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following :look at something at least five meters from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times. It should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.

We eat food to get energy, so we should eat when we feel hungry. But do we really eat only when we are hungry? No, we sometimes eat even when we’re not hungry, and this causes overeating ----eating too much. But overeating can do a lot of harm , as it can cause obesity(肥胖)that can cause heart problems and other illnesses.
There are many common reasons that make us eat too much.
Meeting friends may be good for our social life, but it can also be one of the main reasons for overeating. We usually pay no attention to our health when we meet with friends.
Moods such as anger, sadness, happiness ,fear are the most common ones that make us eat food to help us feel better .
Busy lifestyles can have an effect on our eating habits .We start eating too quickly just to save time , as a result ,we eat more than our body’s requirement . When we eat meals or snacks too fast, our brain takes some time to realize that it’s full, and of course it results in overeating.
Temperature plays a very important role in deciding our food habitat In winters, we usually have warm or hot drinks like coffee, tea, hot chocolate and heavy meals to keep ourselves warm . In summers , we have ice dreams ,desserts and other drinks .These foods with the regular food add to calorie and lead to overeating .
Supermarkets have lots of attractive offers to get us to buy things that we may or may not need .There is no doubt we love eating and when we are served with our favourite food , we act like we have never seen food before .
We have always been taught to finish everything that is on the plate .So, even when we start feeling full , we keep on eating till our plate is empty or till we stop feeling guilty about wasting food .
How to control how much you put in your stomach ? here are some ways .
Use smaller plates and tall, skinny glasses. It seems that there is more food on the plate and more to drink in the glass. Smaller serving containers(容器)help stop you from putting much food and drink .
Make the sweets and other snacks out of reach . Get the candy dish off your desk and set out a bowl of fruit instead .

In the most southern part of our planet, there’s a place that’s covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica (南極洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest (惡劣的) place on the Earth.

As the world’s least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. In 1983, China joined the Antarctic Treaty (《南極條約》). The treaty made Antarctica a peaceful place for member countries to do scientific research. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.
Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen (速凍) food which can be heated easily is people’s daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather. Therefore, scientists often eat dried or canned vegetables.
Sleep is also troublesome. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create “night”.
Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force (七級(jí)以上的) winds. Sometimes the wind is even stronger than a typhoon. It can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.
What’s more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.
Although it is challenging to work in Antarctica, scientists’ passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.
