When Alice was only eight weeks old,she was abandoned because of deafness. Poor Alice, dirty, sick and nervous, had a hard start in life. But less than a month after being saved, the little dog began to learn sign language orders (命令) with her new family, and now she has already learned the signs for several common orders.

Marie Williams,41 ,and her husband Mark Morgan,43 ,who are both deaf themselves, adopted (收養(yǎng)) the dog from the animal charity The Blue Cross. The couple and their three sons Liam,16. Lewis,13. and Owen,5. who have normal hearing, are teaching the lovely dog sign language orders, including instructions for sit, come and roll over.

Marie Williams said, "We were thinking about getting a dog. When we were told Alice was deaf,we just couldn't believe it. She was so beautiful, and the fact that she was deaf just made us fall in love with her even more一we knew that she would fit right into our family. I remembered when we went to visit her at the centre,I had tears in my eyes. I felt so angry that someone abandoned her because in his eyes she was not ' perfect'. It goes to show with a little effort (努力) it is easy to get along well with the deaf dog."

Julie Stone from The Blue Cross said, "I was always worried that people won't be willing to take such a dog home, because it needs lots of special training. So it was amazing to see Marie,Mark and their children became friends with Alice in such a short time. They know just how to get her attention. They are a perfect match and Alice has found the perfect home where I know she'll get all the love."

The Blue Cross, which just depends on public donations, provides new homes for thousands of dogs, cats, horses, and other small animals every year through the Internet.

Beauty meant something special to me for a time. I guess that was before I was six or seven years old. Later I was sent to an orphanage (孤兒院) and the life there turned me into an old man.

I would get up every morning at the orphanage, make my bed just like a little soldier and then I would get into one of the two straight lines for breakfast with other twenty or thirty boys who also lived in my dormitory.

One Saturday morning after breakfast,I saw the houseparent (宿舍管理員) chasing the beautiful butterflies that lived in the bushes around the orphanage.

I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful living things, one after another, and then took them from the net and then stuck straight pins (大頭4十) through their head and wings, and put them on a board.

How cruel it was to kill something of such beauty. I had walked many times into the bushes, all by myself;the butterflies could land on my head, face and hands...

When the telephone rang, the houseparent put the large board down on the ground and went inside to answer the phone. I walked up to the board and looked at the butterflies he caught just now. One of them was still moving about so I touched it carefully making one of the pins fall out. It started flying around and around trying to get away.

Soon the houseparent came back and started shouting at me. He picked up the board and started beating me on the head. There were all kinds of butterfly pieces going everywhere. I sat there by that big old tree for a long time. And I tried to get all the butterfly pieces back together, but it was too hard to do so.

Every year when the butterflies returned to the orphanage,I would always try to drive them away, because they did not know that the orphanage was a bad place to live and a very bad place to die.

An American group developed the rooftop gardening in the early 1980s. The group is known as ECHO. This idea was to help people living in cities who did not have land to grow vegetables. And now it is becoming more and more popular in many other countries.

To build a rooftop garden four things are necessary. You need a roof strong enough and four pieces of wood to build a box. Grass cuttings in which to plant your garden and a thin piece of plastic on which to put the cut grass are also necessary.

Begin by testing (檢測(cè)) your roof to make sure it is strong enough. Cut and collect some grass. Cover the roof with a thin piece of plastic. Then you build a box from the four pieces of wood. The box has no top or bottom. It should be about 8cm deep. It can be as long and as wide as needed. Put the box on the plastic. Then fill it with the cut grass. Water the grass and push it down by walking on it. After about three weeks the rooftop box is ready for planting.

Put the seeds directly into the wet grass. It is important that the grass is kept wet until the plants begin to grow. When the plants are growing, you will need to water them every day unless it rains. And birds must be prevented from eating the seeds or new plants. They will also need some liquid fertilizer^液體化肥) .You can make your own liquid fertilizer if you can get wastes from chickens. Put the chicken wastes in a cloth bag. Then put the bag in a big container (容器) of water. After about one week, the water becomes a good liquid fertilizer.

The rooftop garden is a good place to grow peas, tomatoes and onions. If the box is deep enough, potatoes and carrots also will grow.
