Carbon monoxide poisoning (一氧化碳中毒) causes death and injuries around the world. This gas is a problem in all parts of the world that experience cold weather. A few years ago, America’s Centers for Disease Control (C. D. C.) studied deaths linked (聯(lián)系) with carbon monoxide poisoning. It found that the number of carbon monoxide deaths in the United States was greatest in January. The C.D.C. also found that carbon monoxide kills more than four hundred Americans each year. And, it said more than twenty thousand people are taken to hospital for treatment of health problems linked with the gas.
Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because people do not know it is in the air. The gas has no color, no taste and no smell. It does not cause burning eyes. And it does not cause people to cough. Yet, carbon monoxide gas is very deadly (致命的). It steals the body’s ability to use oxygen.
Carbon monoxide makes it difficult for the blood to carry oxygen to body tissues (血管). It does this by linking with the blood. When the gas links with the blood, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it. Damage (損害) to the body can begin very quickly from large amounts (數(shù)量) of carbon monoxide.
How quickly this can happen depend on how long a person is breathing the gas and how much gas he or she breathes in.
Carbon monoxide poisoning has warning signs(標(biāo)志). But people have to be awake to realize them. Small amounts of the gas will cause a person’s head to hurt. He or she may begin to feel tired. Their stomachs may feel sick. The room may appear to be turning around. The person may have trouble thinking clearly.
People develop serious headache as the amount of the gas continues to enter their blood. They will begin to feel very tired and sleepy. They may have terrible stomachache.
Doctors say carbon monoxide influences people differently. For example a small child will experience health problems or die much sooner than an adult. The general health of the person or his or her age can also be important.

Do animals have a culture? What do we mean by "culture"? Recently social scientists have begun to ask if culture is found just in humans, or if some animals have a culture too. When we speak of culture, we mean a way of life that a group of people have in common. Culture is the forms of behavior (行為)hat help people to live together. When you get tired of homework, several minutes’ walk in a nearby green park helps you relax at once. Or you may stand facing the lake or the sea. They’ll calm (not to be excited or nervous) you just like the green plants.
Wonder why? Color is a key part of the answers. Since it is so, green and blue help make people feel more quiet and safe.
All colors have special power. Scientists have found that many colors have specific effects (效果) on people’s minds and feelings.
Try an easy and interesting experiment and you’ll see how color “misleads” you sometimes. Wrap (包裝) two boxes of the same size with colored paper, one red and the other white. Then weigh the two boxes with your hands. Which one is heavier? Most people will think that the red box is heavier, even though they weigh the same.
Colors can affect (影響) learning. Scientists have found that students spend more time reading if they read information written in blue text. Blue helps most people calm down and think more.
Smart (clever) uses of colors in daily life are to be seen everywhere. Hospital and libraries seldom (很少) paint their walls, tables and desks red. They use light colors, like light blue or green. Red makes people excited while light colors help them relax. Haven’t worked out how color affects your daily life? Start with your small room. Try to make some changes in it and you’ll get to know how important color is!

When does music in public places become noise pollution?
You may like at least some kind of music. But the problem is that, in lots of places, you’re made to hear somebody else’s choice in music. Say you’ve just landed at an airport. At the airport, the “background” (背景)music may be played loudly.
When you are on the way to your hotel, there may be another kind of music played by the taxi driver. Then you finally reach your hotel. But when you are taking the elevator(電梯),there is elevator music.
You go out to dinner and end up in a place where the owner of the restaurant thinks music will help make you eat more and spend more. Then a person playing the violin comes around. This is called the “music wallpaper”. It is to make you buy more and eat a lot. Even the government thinks this is “noise pollution,” especially when the music is too loud.
Noise pollution may be bad for our hearing. It’s also bad for some of our daily activities, such as sleeping, conversations and so on.
The fact that you can’t see, taste or smell it may help explain why it has not received as much attention as other kinds of pollution, such as air pollution or water pollution. The air around us is always filled with sounds, but most of us would not think we are surrounded(包圍) by noise. This can be bad for our health. So many people like soft and quiet music in their house.
【小題1】In the restaurant, the music is to make you _____________.
A.have a nice meal |
B.eat more food and spend more money |
C.enjoy some wonderful music |
D.have a great time in the restaurant |
A.food pollution | B.water pollution |
C.a(chǎn)ir pollution | D.noise pollution |
A.it’s played at the airport |
B.it’s played by the taxi driver |
C.it’s played when you are taking the elevator |
D.you are made to hear someone else’s choice in music |
A.music that is too loud is bad for our health |
B.people pay as much attention to noise pollution as they do to air pollution |
C.people like loud music in their house |
D.most people think that there’s lots of noise around us |

Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition(眼睛識(shí)別) program is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain and France. Soon, this technology(技術(shù)) will change all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hands or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your fingers.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes, so the program can be up to 94% correct, depending on(依靠) how good the technology is. Some programs may only be right 51% of the time. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!
【小題1】 How does the eye-recognition program work?
A.You type in your number. | B.You say your name. |
C.You look at the machine. | D.You show your ID card. |
A.Because eyes hardly change. |
B.Because the program is widely used around the world. |
C.Because people like the idea of the program. |
D.Because hands or fingers can get dirty. |
A.Remembering smells. |
B.Remembering eyes. |
C.Remembering fingerprints. |
D.Remembering the shape of faces. |
A.The program is being tested in Japan. |
B.Computers can remember you by looking at your clothes. |
C.91% of people in Britain don’t like the idea of the eye-recognition program. |
D.Machines with other systems will also tell who you are in the future. |
