The marathon in my town usually takes place in summer every year. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance (救護(hù)車) in case any of them needed medical care.

"We're supposed to stay behind the last runner,so drive slowly," I said to the driver,Doug,as we began to move forward.

As they began to pace themselves (控制自己的步速) ,the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue silk running shorts and a white T-shirt.

"Doug, look!" We knew we were already watching our " last runner". Her legs were so disabled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to be able to walk properly, let alone (更不用說) a marathon.

Doug and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We didn't say a thing. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance, then we'd slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggling (掙扎) to put one toot in front of the other,I found myself hurt and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time,I hoped that she wouldn't.

Finally, she was the only runner left in sight. Tears ran down my face as I watched her with fear, amazement and even respect as she pushed forward with determination through the finish line.

I do not know this woman's name, but that day she became a part of my life―a part I often depend on. For her,it wasn't about beating the other runners or winning a prize;it was about finishing what she had set out to do,no matter what. When I think things are too difficult or too timeconsuming (費(fèi)時(shí)) ,or I get those "I just can't do it",I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.

Beauty meant something special to me for a time. I guess that was before I was six or seven years old. Later I was sent to an orphanage (孤兒院) and the life there turned me into an old man.

I would get up every morning at the orphanage, make my bed just like a little soldier and then I would get into one of the two straight lines for breakfast with other twenty or thirty boys who also lived in my dormitory.

One Saturday morning after breakfast,I saw the houseparent (宿舍管理員) chasing the beautiful butterflies that lived in the bushes around the orphanage.

I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful living things, one after another, and then took them from the net and then stuck straight pins (大頭4十) through their head and wings, and put them on a board.

How cruel it was to kill something of such beauty. I had walked many times into the bushes, all by myself;the butterflies could land on my head, face and hands...

When the telephone rang, the houseparent put the large board down on the ground and went inside to answer the phone. I walked up to the board and looked at the butterflies he caught just now. One of them was still moving about so I touched it carefully making one of the pins fall out. It started flying around and around trying to get away.

Soon the houseparent came back and started shouting at me. He picked up the board and started beating me on the head. There were all kinds of butterfly pieces going everywhere. I sat there by that big old tree for a long time. And I tried to get all the butterfly pieces back together, but it was too hard to do so.

An American group developed the rooftop gardening in the early 1980s. The group is known as ECHO. This idea was to help people living in cities who did not have land to grow vegetables. And now it is becoming more and more popular in many other countries.

To build a rooftop garden four things are necessary. You need a roof strong enough and four pieces of wood to build a box. Grass cuttings in which to plant your garden and a thin piece of plastic on which to put the cut grass are also necessary.

Begin by testing (檢測(cè)) your roof to make sure it is strong enough. Cut and collect some grass. Cover the roof with a thin piece of plastic. Then you build a box from the four pieces of wood. The box has no top or bottom. It should be about 8cm deep. It can be as long and as wide as needed. Put the box on the plastic. Then fill it with the cut grass. Water the grass and push it down by walking on it. After about three weeks the rooftop box is ready for planting.

Put the seeds directly into the wet grass. It is important that the grass is kept wet until the plants begin to grow. When the plants are growing, you will need to water them every day unless it rains. And birds must be prevented from eating the seeds or new plants. They will also need some liquid fertilizer^液體化肥) .You can make your own liquid fertilizer if you can get wastes from chickens. Put the chicken wastes in a cloth bag. Then put the bag in a big container (容器) of water. After about one week, the water becomes a good liquid fertilizer.

The rooftop garden is a good place to grow peas, tomatoes and onions. If the box is deep enough, potatoes and carrots also will grow.
