I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago. Her husband died because of traffic accident. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insights with us.
The class was clearly over. She said,"Before class is over, I would like to share with all of you an important thought.” “Each of us is on Earth to learn, share, love and *appreciate. We must *cherish every single day.”
Her eyes beginning to water, she went on, “So I would like you to make me a *promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful. It could be a *scent----perhaps of freshly baked bread, or it could be the sound of the *breeze slightly *rustling the leaves in the trees.”
“Please look for these things, and cherish them. For, although it may sound * trite, these things are the *stuff of life. They are the little things on Earth to enjoy. They are the things we often take for *granted. We must try to notice them because it can be easily taken away at any time.”
The class was completely quiet. We picked up our books and went out of the room silently. That afternoon I noticed more things on my way from school than I had that whole semester.
I often think of that teacher and try to appreciate all off those things that sometimes we *overlook.
Take notice of something special you see on your lunch time today. Walk *barefoot along the beach at *sunset. For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we regret, but the things we didn’t do.

For many years I had a good life. My illness was reasonably (適度的) under control, I had a nice relationship with my husband, I did work, I didn't hate. It was, as I said, a good life.
But there's a saying that the good is the enemy of the best. I finally realized this one day, and began making my best life. I changed doctors and tried a new way that could relieve(減輕) my symptoms (癥狀) , rather than just making them easier to deal with. I started talking more with my husband and listening to what he had to say. And I quit(辭掉) my job and started working for myself.
I have the best life I've ever had. I'd call it great. It is possible there's a better life for me, which would then be my "best life" , but for now I don't think so. I've started a business I love. My husband and kids are wonderful. I have a good friend and I'm close to my older sister who lives in town. Could it get better? I suppose so. But for me I think this is the best life I can have right now.
Think more about your life. Where are you living? Are you in a job you just don't mind? What makes your life "good" ? Why isn't it great? What's the enemy of the best and what can you do about it?
Enjoy your best life. We're only here for a short while, and we all need to have the best possible time we can. It's like going to Disney World. If you spend too much time standing in line waiting for the ride, pretty soon your time's up. Get out of the "good" line and have your best life.
【小題1】Which of the following is NOT included in the writer's "good life" ?
A.Having a job. | B.Having no hate. |
C.Getting on well with her husband. | D.Living close to her good friend. |
A.was ill | B.didn't like working |
C.wanted to go for her best life | D.wanted to enjoy her good life |

A.Illness. | B.A good job. | C.Being proud. | D.Being satisfied. |

When I was 18 years old, one morning, my father told me to drive him into a town, about 40 miles away. I had just learned to 36,so I agreed with pleasure. When we came to the town, something was wrong with the car. Then I took the car to a nearby garage to have it 37 and promised to pick Dad up at 4 pm. Because I had a few hours to spend, I decided to go to the 38 .However I became 39 interested in the film that I forgot the time. When the last film finished, it was 6 o’clock.
I was afraid Dad would be 40 and never let me drive again, so I drove back quickly to meet Dad and made an excuse(借口) 41 my being late. I’ll never forget the cry he gave me: “I’m disappointed that I feel you have to tell a lie to me, Jack. I’m angry, not with 42 but with myself. I have failed 43 I’ve brought up a son who can not even tell the truth to his own father. I’m going to walk home now and think seriously about 44 I have done wrong all these years.”
Dad began 45 along the road. I begged(乞求)all the way, telling him how I drove behind him for 40 miles, at a speed of 5 miles an hour. It was the most unforgettable lesson. I have never told a lie to him ever since.

“It’s 8:15 on a Sunday morning,” said the officer, Tidwell, “and this sort of thing seems an unlikely adventure(冒險(xiǎn)) at such a time. Would you mind explaining?”
The man was astonished(吃驚的) at the voice from behind. He turned about and said, “I know what you’re thinking, officer, but it isn’t true. It’s a very funny mistake.”
“I think you’ve just left this house in a manner rather than the usual one. That may be quite all right, but I’d like to make sure.” Tidwell took out his notebook and a pen. “Name, address and occupation and then, please tell me your story.”
“Charlie Crane, lorry(卡車) driver, from Nottingham, 51 Brecon Street. My story?”
“Yes, What were you doing like a fly on that wall, Mr. Crane?”
“Well, I had a breakdown yesterday and had to stay the night here. The landlady’s name is Mrs. Fern. She gave me breakfast at seven, and I was out of here in the right way and down at the lorry park by half past seven. It was only when I felt around for a cigarette that I realized I’d left $80 under the pillow(枕頭) here. It’s a habit I’ve got into. I even do it almost every day.”
“I see. Why didn’t you miss it when you meant to pay Mrs.? What’s her name?”
“I paid her last night. You’ve got to pay when you take the room, see? So I came rushing back, but it’s Sunday, and she’d gone back to bed. I rang the bell and banged on the front door for ten minutes before I came round here. Up I went this pipe(管子) and the money was still there. You know the rest, and I hope you believe it because….”
“Mr. Crane, whatever are you doing here? I thought you’d gone an hour ago.” It was Mrs. Fern.
