翻譯語篇 (5小題,計10分)

What are magic words? Words like ‘thank you’, ‘please’ and ‘sorry’ can work wonders

in our daily life. These polite expressions are used every day in American—among

strangers, between friends or with family. People with good manners always communicate with others well by using these magic words.

What should you do when you receive a gift for your birthday? You’d better sit down

and write a thank-you letter. The words thank you’ are very important and used very often. We say them when someone hands us a letter, passes us a book, offers us a bottle of water, or lends us an umbrella.

“請”是另一個重要的詞,但是很多人忘記去使用它. It is not polite to ask someone for help without saying ‘please’. We are supposed to use it when we ask for something, too. It may be a book, a pen, or more milk. It may be in the classroom, at home, or at the bus stop. We can use ‘please’ to make a. request.

We should also learn to say sorry.如果我們已經(jīng)傷害了某個人的感情,我們應(yīng)該說“對不起”.When we have told a lie and regret it, the same word should be used. Sometimes

we have forgotten something or broken a promise, so we need to explain with the word as a beginning. ‘Sorry’ is such a word that can make people forget wrongs

‘Thank you! Please! Sorry!’—these words are simple but useful. Man said them long ago. We use them now. So will our kid.

If the rose can be said to be a special flower, then the apple can be said to be a special fruit. It is very important in American culture. American stories speak of Johnny Appleseed, who went throughout America collecting apple seeds and planting apple trees. He had a great love for nature and went through fields and farms adding richness and beauty to the country.

One of the first sayings taught to school children is, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” This short saying encourages children to eat fresh fruit to keep healthy. If someone always says good words to a person, people will call him an “apple polisher”. This, however, is not a good name. If someone is very dear to us, we say that he or she is the “apple of our eye”.

Most people believe that the fruit which Eve gave to Adam was an apple, even though the Bible(圣經(jīng)) never says so. The apple, therefore, is a deep part of the language and stories of America.

An apple is also delicious. Apples can be cooked in many ways, used as a dessert, and made into sweet juice.

In many parts of the country during the harvest season, a popular activity is to go into an apple garden to pick apples. Washington, D. C. and New York are both famous for their apples.

Finally, when it’s time to take a vacation to American cities, one can always visit New York, which is “the biggest apple” of all the American cities.

1.What does the underlined phrase “apple polisher” mean?

A. Something for cutting apples.

B. A person who likes to please others.

2.“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a proverb about ____________.

The Most Useful Invention of All Time?

May—Tuesday, November 6, 2015

I am writing a paper for my English class, and I need some ideas. What do you think is the most useful invention of all time? Thanks for your thoughts.

RE: The Most Useful Invention of All Time?

Cindy Wu—Tuesday, November 6, 2015

There are many—the phone, the car, the airplane, but these are not my choices. For an everyday, useful invention .I vote for the air conditioner. I live in Hong Kong, and during the summer, the temperature reaches 35 ℃ or more. The heat is terrible! Without air conditioning, people here can’t work or study. A lot of people might also get sick without cool air.

RE: The Most Useful Invention : The Internet

John—Wednesday, November 7, 2015

The most useful invention of all time are the Internet and the World Wide Web. We can now communicate with people and do business faster. I own a clothing store in Mexico City. I also have a website. Now people from all over the world can buy my clothing using my website . I can keep in touch with my friends and family in Mexico and around the world using email. It’s faster than regular mail, and it’s cheaper than using the phone.

RE: The Most Useful Invention: Yes, but…

Alice—Thursday, November 8,2015

Jorge, I agree—the Internet is useful. But, in my opinion, there is an “ invention ” that is more important — electricity. Of course, this isn’t a man-made invention, but people like Benjamin Franklin and Alessandro Volta learned how to use it. Without electricity, many of the world’s most important inventions would not work.

To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade (遮蔽) against the sun.

Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century BC.

We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there

was a strange thing connected with its use : it became a symbol of honor and power(權(quán)力). In the

Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office or by

royal people such as the kings or queens.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in

common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the middle ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it became a symbol of power.

Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the twentieth century that the umbrellas for women began to be made in all kinds of colors.

1.Ancient people first used umbrellas as ____.

A. a symbol of honor

B. protection against the sun

C. a symbol of power

D. protection against the rain

A. Egypt . B. Babylon C. Rome D. China

3.The underlined word royal might mean _ in Chinese.

A. 王室的 B. 富有的

C. 中產(chǎn)階級的 D. 貧窮的

4. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. The ancient Greeks used the umbrella in their daily life.

B. Europeans hardly used the umbrella during the middle ages.

C. The umbrellas for women were made colorful in ancient times.

D. The style of the umbrella hasn't changed a lot since it was invented

5.This passage is mainly about ___________.

A. the sales of the umbrella

B. the differences among umbrellas

C. the invention of the umbrella

D. the history and the use of the umbrella
