Different countries have different customs in giving presents. In China you must never give a clock to a Chinese person, because the pronunciation of the word for “clock” in Chinese is similar to the pronunciation of “death”.Also, don’t wrap (用……包裹) a present in white, black, or blue paper, because they are the colours for funerals (葬禮).Don’t give a knife, because something sharp can cut a friendship.

In Russia if you give flowers as presents, you have to give an odd number of them (One, Three, five, etc.) because even numbers of flowers are for funerals.

In Germany if you are invited to dinner, flowers are good presents to take to your dinner hostess (女主人), but don’t take her red roses because it means you are in love with her. Fifth-grader Kayla Martel loves basketball. But her school doesn’t have a girls’ team. So for the past four years, Kayla has played on the boys’ team at St. John the Apostle School in Clark, New Jersey. That hadn’t been a problem until earlier this year. The team was told that it either had to ask Kayla and another girl to leave the team or end its season early.

The team, called the Chargers, plays in a league (聯(lián)賽) that didn’t allow mixed teams after fourth grade. When the league leader found out that there were girls in the team, he gave the coaches (教練) bad news. The team could keep playing but only without the girls.

Keisha Martel, Kayla’s mom, is one of the Chargers’ coaches. She asked the team to take a vote (投票), knowing it would be difficult for the kids to choose.

“They all said, ‘It doesn’t matter. We’re a team and we’re sticking together (團(tuán)結(jié)一致),’” said Keisha.

The Chargers wasn’t allowed to play for a few weeks, but then the league reversed its decision. The team, girls included, played the rest of the season. They even made it to the championship (錦標(biāo)賽) game — and won!

Kayla has some advice for other teams. “Make sure you are family — you have each other’s back,” she says.
