An owl(貓頭鷹)is a bird. They live in almost every country of the world.
Owls are mostly awake at night.Owls hunt for mice, insects(昆蟲),and even fish for food.Owls are good at hunting.Their soft feathers(羽毛)enable them to fly nearly silently. They have very good hearing, which helps them to hunt well in the darkness.
Owls' eyes are unusual. Both of the owls' eyes face front. The owl cannot move its eyes.Owls are far-sighted,which means they can see very well far away…but they can't see up close very well at all.Luckily, their eyesight(視力)is what they use for hunting, and they can see far away even in low light.Owls can turn their heads 180 degrees(度).This makes it look like they might be able to turn their heads all the way around, but l80 degrees is all the owls need to see what’s going on all around them.
Perhaps because of the owl's mysterious(神秘的)appearance, especially its round eyes and flexible(靈活的)neck, there are a lot of myths(神話)about owls. Many cultures believe that owls are unusually wise. Some cultures think owls may bring had luck.

Reading Comprehension
A barn owl(貓頭鷹) silently flies at night through the dark forest. Suddenly, the large bird hears a mouse running through the leaves. The bird quickly changes its flight path, drops down, and scoops up(抓起) the mouse in its talons(猛禽的爪). Another meal has been successfully captured.
How is the barn owl able to pinpoint the location of the mouse in the dark? Credit(把…歸功于) the bird' s excellent hearing and its ability to determine the exact location of the source of a sound.
According to a recent study at Stanford University, a barn owl learned how to pinpoint the location of a sound source when it was only about two weeks old. The owl did this by noting the difference in the time it took a sound to reach each ear and in the difference in the loudness of the sound in each ear.
In another test, three young barn owls were given eyeglasses when their eyes were just beginning to open. The lenses(鏡片) in the glasses distorted(使變形) a scene so that an object an owl was looking at seemed to be 20 degrees to the left of its actual position.
The scientists found that whenever one of the young owls heard a sound, it would look at a spot 20 degrees to the left of the sound source. Thus, the scientists concluded, the owls learned at a very young age how to locate the source of a sound.
1.What is the reason for the barn owl to successfully catch the mouse?
[ ]
A.It has very good eyesight at night.
B.It has very sharp hearing.
C.It is very good at determining the location of the sound.
D.Both B and C.

4.Why did one of the young owls, after hearing a sound, look at a spot 20 degrees left of the sound source?
[ ]
A.It was too young to find the correct spot.
B.It was used to looking at the spot 20 degrees to the left of an object.
C.It was a mistake often made by this young owl.
D.It was wearing eyeglasses which distorted the object.

Are You an Owl or a Lark?
Do you start the day very slowly, and really wake up in the afternoon? Then you may be an owl (貓頭鷹) . Are you full of pep (精力) in the morning and tired out later on? Then you may be a lark (云雀).
Owls and larks are different kinds of birds. Scientists use these names for different kinds of people, too. Owls are people who take more time to wake up. They seem to have more pep as the day goes on. Larks are people who are wide awake and busy right away. They may slow down in the afternoon.
The way we feel affects the kind of work we do. Larks do better work in the morning. They are more wide awake then. Owls do better work in the afternoon or at night. That can make a difference in a job or at school. Larks would probably do better on school tests first thing in the morning. Owls would do better later in the day.
