The marathon in my town usually takes place in summer every year. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance (救護(hù)車) in case any of them needed medical care.
"We're supposed to stay behind the last runner,so drive slowly," I said to the driver,Doug,as we began to move forward.
As they began to pace themselves (控制自己的步速) ,the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue silk running shorts and a white T-shirt.
"Doug, look!" We knew we were already watching our " last runner". Her legs were so disabled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to be able to walk properly, let alone (更不用說) a marathon.
Doug and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We didn't say a thing. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance, then we'd slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggling (掙扎) to put one toot in front of the other,I found myself hurt and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time,I hoped that she wouldn't.
Finally, she was the only runner left in sight. Tears ran down my face as I watched her with fear, amazement and even respect as she pushed forward with determination through the finish line.
I do not know this woman's name, but that day she became a part of my life―a part I often depend on. For her,it wasn't about beating the other runners or winning a prize;it was about finishing what she had set out to do,no matter what. When I think things are too difficult or too timeconsuming (費(fèi)時(shí)) ,or I get those "I just can't do it",I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.

We must study at school. We need to learn something. So we can read books and write letters to people. Our village has a school. It is a very small school. There is only one classroom and one teacher. But we are lucky, because most villages don't have any schools.
We all live far from the school. At lunch time we eat in the classroom in winter and we eat outside in summer. In winter we have to bring some wood to make a fire to make the classroom warm. The children in the school are all from six to twelve years old. We learn Chinese, math, music, art and PE at school. But we don't learn English because our teacher can't speak any English. Every day we read the books many times. This can help us remember our lessons well.

I'm a 43-year-old mother of three young kids with a Master of Science degree (理學(xué)碩士) . I also deliver (遞送) pizzas for a living. I stated doing it after staying home with my children for four years. Caring for kids all day is a good opportunity for many women, but it wasn't right for me. I began suffering from depression and decided to get a job so I'd have more of my own world. Now I work nights when my husband is home,so we don't have to depend on a child care center.
After I learned the basic skills of pizza delivery―like getting the orders together and not getting lost―I began my new "career".
Our community (社區(qū)) had a small expensive college full of students who ordered lots of pizzas. Most of the kids were friendly and polite. On Friday and Saturday nights, some of the dorms (宿舍) had huge parties. Though the stairs were sticky from beer and the music was so loud that they couldn't hear me knock on the door, the crowds of happy students shouting "Pizza!Pizza!" always let me through.
The first few days of each month, one of us drivers would take our turn to cover the publichousing developments. These customers did not always tip well, but I always liked seeing the children and adults sitting outside and enjoying the evenings when the weather was nice.
I also deliver to homes of rich people now,but the amount I make in tips has stayed the same. As I drive up to these beautiful houses,it's easy to imagine a generous tip. The person who answers the door always looks young and, like the members of my own family, highly educated. All I usually get is a brief "Thank you" and a dollar or two.

A small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree and it has been there for the past ten years or so.
It all began because my husband Justin hated Christmas―oh,not the true meaning of Christmas. Overspending was one thing, but compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts―running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and a pair of gloves for Grandma. . . spending money is nothing. I felt too tired to think of any special gifts.
Knowing Justin felt the same way,I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Justin. The inspiration came in an unusual way.
Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling (摔跤) at the junior level at the school he attended;and shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored (贊助) by an innercity church. As the match began,I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets (頭盔) to protect their ears. Well, our boys ended up defeating them. We took every weight class.
Justin, seated beside me,shook his head sadly, "I wish just one of them could have won ," he said. "They have a lot potential (潛力) ,but losing like this could take the heart out of them. " Justin loved kids―all kids, and he knew them, having coached little league football and baseball. That's when the idea for his present came. That afternoon,I went to a local sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to innercity church without leaving my name.
