It was the first day of school. I had a new classmate, a little old lady with a warm smile. She said, “Hi, young man! I'm Rose. I'm 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”
I said , “Of course!”
“Why are you in college at an age?” I asked.
She joked, “I'm here to meet a husband, get married, have children, and then travel around the world.”
“No, seriously,” I asked.
“I always of having a college education. Now I'm getting one!” she told me.
After a year, Rose became popular. She easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she enjoyed the attention from .
At the end of the term we invited Rose to at our party. I'll never forget what she taught .
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow because we stop playing. Here are the of staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every . You've got to have a dream. When you your dreams, you die!” she said.
“There is a big between growing old and growing up. Anybody can grow old. That doesn't take any talent or ability,” she added. “But to , you have to find the chance in change. Have no regrets(遺憾). We usually don't have regrets for what we did , rather for things we did not do.”
Finally we graduated from the college with Rose. One week graduation , she died peacefully in her sleep. She taught us by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

Do you know what Oscar is? When did it start? Maybe you can find the background of the awards in the following passage.
The awards started in 1929. Their full title is “The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards”. The Academy is a group of people who have worked in the film industry for many years. They decide who will receive the awards. The awards are often referred to as the “Oscar”. This is a nickname given to the awards by a lady called Margaret Herrick. She was once the director of the Academy and she once said that the little gold statue reminded her of her uncle Oscar!
The Oscar is always an exciting event. Each year, at least one unusual thing happens. When the Italian actor and director Roberto Benigni won an Oscar for best foreign film, he danced on stage! When Gwyneth Paltrow, the star of Shakespeare in Love won the Oscar for best actress, she could not make her acceptance speech because she was crying so much with happiness!
In 1987, Roberto Benigni won the award for best director for a film about the last emperor of China. Since then, Chinese film and actors have started to make an impact at the award. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a huge success and it won the award for best foreign language film in 2001. It also won several technical awards for its amazing “flying” people. We expect to see more awards for Chinese film in the near future.
It’s time for the Oscar again. Once more, the stars will dress up in their finest and go to Kodar Theater. There, they will find out who had won the awards for best actor, best actress and best director. Millions of people watch the awards every year to find out who the winners are. Last July, my 12-year-old car died on California's Santa Ana Freeway. It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25 miles from home. I couldn't reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus. Not knowing the routes, I figured I'd just head east. A bus pulled up, and I asked the driver how far she was going. “Four more lights,” she said. There was another bus I could take from there. This clearly was going to be a long night. She dropped me off at the end of her route and told me which bus to look for.
After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus pulled up. There was no lighted number above its windshield (擋風(fēng)玻璃). It was out of service. But the door opened, and I was surprised to find that it was the same driver. “I just can't leave you here,” she said. “This isn't the nicest place. I'll give you a ride home.” “You'll drive me home in the bus?” I asked, perplexed (困惑). “No, I'll take you in my car,” she said. “It's a long way,” I protested. “Come on, ” she said. “I have nothing else to do.”
As we drove from the station in her car, she began telling me a story. A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas. A good Samaritan picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car. “I'm just passing the favor along, ” she said. When I offered her money as a thank-you, she wouldn't hear of it. “That wouldn't make it a favor, ” she said. “Just do something nice for somebody. Pass it along.”
1.Why did the writer say that he would have a long night?
A. He wondered how long he had to wait for the next bus.
B. No driver would give him a ride.
C. He didn't know the routes.
D. He perhaps would have to take a taxi.
2.Judging from its context, the place where the writer waited for the second bus was_____.
A. very quiet and peaceful
B. dark without street lights
C. neither clean nor beautiful
D. a little unsafe
3.The bus driver drove the writer home later because ________.
A. she happened to go in the same direction
B. she wanted to do something good for other people
C. her brother told her to do so
D. she wanted to earn more money
4.The bus driver hoped that the writer ________.
A. would do as she did
B. would keep her in memory
C. would give the money to others
D. would do her a favor
