She took a pair of scissors outside and began to cut the grass. She thought that ifChadsaw her doing this,he would be ashamed and get the mower fixed.

Chad saw his wife in the yard. He watched her for a while and then he went back inside the house. A few minutes later he came out again, with a comb. He gave the comb to Margaret.

Have you ever heard someone say he is going outside "to get a breath of fresh air"?

Have you ever tried to imagine what life would be like if the air was so dirty that people couldn't get a breath of fresh air?

Everyone wants to know why the air has become so bad. Well, millions of cars and factories often give out waste gas. A lot of garbage is burned every day. . . Sometimes you can smell the pollution and sometimes, when the air looks smoky, you can even see it. But more often, pollution is invisible.

Whether you can see it or not,air pollution can cause a lot of damage. Not only people, but also plants, animals or buildings would suffer from it. Sometimes polluted air flies into the sky, then falls to the earth with snow, rain or dust again, and they turn the water acidic (酸的) .And indoor air pollution comes from cigarette smoke, carpet (地氈) cleaners and other ordinary household products.

Scientists have been fighting against air pollution for many years. They ask factories control the waste gas,and they have found some new ways to make the air clean. Cars have been equipped (裝備) with something to give out little gas. . . As for indoor pollution, people can just open doors and windows for a while to let the fresh air in.

Thanks to different kinds of controls, the air in the United States is better than it used to be. For example, between 1975 and 1984,the amount of carbon monoxide (—氧化碳) and sulfur dioxide (二氧孑匕^ 1) in the air dropped an average of more than 30 percent. The amount of lead dropped 70 percent.  Each spring is a new blossom of wild flowers in the ditch. There is one special blue flower that has always caught my eyes. I've noticed that it blooms only in the morning hours. Every day for about two weeks,I see these beautiful flowers.

This spring,I started a wild flower garden in my yard. I could look out of the kitchen window and saw the flowers while doing the dishes. I often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the ditch would look great in my garden. Every day,I drove past the flowers, thinking, "I'll stop on my way home and dig them, but I don't want to get my good clothes dirty. " Whatever the reason,I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a shovel (鐵鏟) to do it.

After 21 years of marriage,my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and see a movie. She said, "I love you,but I know this other woman loves you too,and she would love to spend some time with you."

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been a widow (寡婦) for 19 years. But my busy work and my three children had made it impossible to visit her often.

That night I called to invite my mother and took her out for dinner.

She thought about it for a moment, and then said, "I would like that very much."

That Friday after work,as I drove over to pick her,I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house,I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date.

We went to a nice restaurant. After we sat down,I had to read the menu for her. Her eyes couldn't see clearly.

"Now you can relax," I smiled.

During the dinner,we had an agreeable conversation about each other's life.
