Earlier this year, China achieved a new landmark in space exploration. On Jan 3, Chang’e 4 became the first space probe in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon, People’s Daily reported.

From Earth, we can only see one side of the moon. The other side has been a mystery. Scientists have long wondered what is on this side of the moon.

Chang’e 4 can’t communicate with Earth directly. But Queqiao, a reply satellite(中繼衛(wèi)星), can help us stay in touch. Queqiao was sent into space in May. After Chang’e 4 landed on the moon, it took pictures and sent them back to Earth through Queqiao.

Chang’e 4 has sent back photos of the far side of the moon. It is also being used to carry out experiments, such as growing seeds in a low-gravity environment. The data(數據) collected from these experiments could be used to help us build a base on the moon in the future.

The success of the Chang’e 4 mission is a major achievement for China’s space program. It marks a new stage in China's deep space exploration, said Wu Yanhua.

China launched its lunar exploration program in 2004, naming it Chang’e. Chinese scientists set three goals — “orbiting(環(huán)繞運行), landing and sample returning” — referring to launching probes that could circle around the moon, touch down on its surface and bring lunar materials back to Earth.

Chang’e 4 has realized the second goal. The third will be achieved during the Chang'e 5 mission, which is set to take place before the end of this year, China Daily reported.

Following the success of the Chang’e missions, Chinese scientists are looking even farther into(調查) our solar system. China’s first Mars mission is expected to be carried out by 2020, Wu said.

1. reported that Chang’e 4 has successfully landed on the far side of the moon.

A. People’s Daily B. China Daily C. Chinese scientists D. Wu Yanhua

2.Why was Queqiao set up?

A. To take photos. B. To be sent into space.

C. To keep in touch with the earth. D. To grow seeds on the moon.

A. The Chang’e 4 probe. B. A base on the moon in the future.

C. China's space program. D. The success of the Chang’e 4 mission.

4.What’s the third goal of Chang’e?

A. Circle around the moon. B. Bring lunar materials back to earth.

C. Send people to the moon. D. Land on the surface of the moon.

5.What can we infer from the passage?

A. Chang’e 5 will be China's last lunar exploration program.

B. China has not launched any space probes to Mars so far.

C. Chang’e 4 has uncovered the secrets of the far side of the moon.

The first breath-taking pictures of the Earth taken from space showed it as a solid ball covered by brown land masses and blue-green oceans. We had never seen the Earth from that distance before. To us, it appeared as though the Earth had always looked that way and always would. Scientists now know, however, that the surface of the Earth is not as permanent (永久的) as we had thought.

Scientists explain that the surface of our planet is always moving. Continents moves about the Earth like huge ships at sea. They float on pieces of the Earth's outer skin. New outer skin is created as melted rock pushed up from below the ocean floor. Old outer skin is destroyed as it rolls down into the hot area and melts again.

Only since the 1960s have scientists really began to understand that the planet Earth is a great living machine. Some experts have said this new understanding is one of the most important revolutions in scientific thought. The revolution is based on the work of scientists who study the movement of the continents-a science called plate tectonics.

The modern story of plate tectonics begins with the German scientist Alfred Wegener. Before World War One, Wegener argued that the continents had moved and were still moving. He said the idea first occurred to him when he observed that the coastlines of South America and Africa could fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. He proposed that the two continents might have been one and then split apart.

Wegener was not the first person to wonder about the shape of the continents. About 500 years ago, explorers thought about it when they made the first maps of Americas. The explorers noted the east coast of North America and South America would fit almost exactly into the west coast of Europe and south Africa. What the explorers did not do, but Wegener did, was to investigate the idea that the continents move.

1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The coastline of India and Africa fit together.

B.Our ancient thought that the surface of the earth is still.

C.Alfred Wegener was not the first person to investigate the idea that the continents move.

D.We didn't see the Earth from far away until we saw the picture taken in the space.

2.The last word of the third paragraph "tectonics" means" "______".

A.study of building B.study of the earth structure

C.study of the earth surface D.study of designing

3.What did the explorers find?

A.The east coastlines of North America and the west coast of Europe could fit together.

B.The coastlines of North America and Africa could fit together.

C.The coastlines of South America and Africa could fit together.

D.The coastlines of North America and India could fit together.

Have you ever stayed deep underground in a cave? You have no food and the oxygen(氧氣) is running out. You're not even sure if anyone knows you're down there.

A soccer team of 12 young Thai boys, as well as their coach, had to go through this experience this summer. They became trapped in a cave in Thailand on June 23, spending 18 days inside until they were saved by an international team of divers(潛水員). After hearing the news that a former Thai Navy SEAL(海 軍海豹突擊隊員)died while trying to save these kids, my friends and I talked about the situation and felt as if there might be no way to get the children out.

But we held out hope anyway. We refused to give up hope for these kids, even when the situation seemed quite dark. We were rewarded(獎勵)for our hope when they were finally saved.

It can be hard to hold out hope in dark times. Every day, we read or hear about the terrible things that happen in the world. This makes it hard for us to stay positive. Some people go through their lives thinking that the worst is always just around the corner.

However, I believe that it's especially important to stay positive during difficult times. This is the best way to deal with the challenges that we face in life. As people often say: there is always a light at the end of the tunnel(隧道).

1.How many people were trapped in a cave in Thailand on June 23?

A.12. B.13. C.18. D.23.

2.What does the underlined word “trapped” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.捕獲的 B.收集的 C.受困的 D.失望的

3.From the story, we know that _______.

A.not all of the kids were saved

B.a man died when he tried to save the kids

C.the writer and his friends also joined in the rescue efforts

D.the Thai Navy SEAL were rewarded by the government

4.According to the passage, when we face challenges, we should _______.

a. hold out hope b. stay positive c. give up d. wait for help
