Some people believe that classes, teachers and school buildings will no longer be necessary in the near future because of the Internet and other new technology. Perhaps this will be true one day, but if the world has no schools, I can't imagine how our society will be. In fact, we should learn how to use new technology to make schools better. We should invent a new kind of school connected to libraries, museums, science centers, labs and even companies. Technological companies should create learning programs for schools. Scientists could give talks through the Internet. TV networks and local stations could develop programs about things students are studying in school. Labs could set up websites to show new technology, so students could see it on the Internet.
Is this a dream? No. There have been many cities where this is beginning to happen. Here the whole city is connected to the Internet, and learning can take place at home, at school, and in the office. Businessesprovide programs for the schools and the society. The schools provide computer labs for people without their own computers at home. Because everyone can go on the Internet, older people use it as much as younger ones, and everyone can visit faraway libraries and museums as easily as nearby ones. How will this new thing of school change the usual way of learning? It is a little early to be sure, but it is very exciting to think about it. Technology will change the way we learn; schools will change as well; and we will learn something from the Internet.

What’s the most important thing in your life? Do you think about this question?
I began to think about it when I was just a little girl. I had a lot of friends and I loved playing with them. So I thought friendship(友誼) was the most important thing in life. If I had no friends, I would be very sad.
When I got older, I thought the most important thing was music. I was crazy about music at that time. To me, if I couldn’t sing or listen to music, my life would be boring.
When I was 12, I read a book that tells a beautiful story about the love between a mother and her child. I was happy to find that love was the most important thing. I thought love made my life beautiful.
Not long ago, I got a new answer to the question from another book. “Happiness is the destination(目標(biāo)) for everyone.” the writer said.
Soon I began to understand friendship, music, love and happiness are all very important to us. These important things make our lives colourful and beautiful.
What’s the most important thing in life now? I still don’t have the answer. However, I don’t want to know. I just want to care about everything important in my life.
I hope everyone can find the important things in their lives, and cherish them!

After my husband died, my world crashed around me. My six children were 10, nine, eight, six, three and 18 months, and I was overwhelmed(壓垮) with the responsibilities(責(zé)任) of earning a living, caring for the children and simply keeping my head above water.
I was lucky to find a wonderful housekeeper to care for the children during the week, but from Friday nights to Monday mornings, the children and I were alone, and frankly(坦誠地) I was uneasy. Every unusual noise or any late-night phone call filled me with fear. I felt really lonely.
One Friday evening I came home from work to find a big beautiful German shepherd(牧羊犬) on our doorstep. It was obvious he wanted to make the house his home. The children took an instant(緊迫的) liking to "German" and begged me to let him in. I agreed to let him sleep in the basement(地下室) until the next day. That night I slept peacefully for the first time in many weeks. The following morning we made phone calls and checked lost-and-found ads for German’s owner, but with no results. Saturday night he was still with us.
On Sunday I had planned to take the children on a picnic. Since I thought it best to leave German behind in case his owner came by, we drove off without him. When we stopped to get gas at a local station, we were amazed to see German racing to the gas station after us. He stayed again Sunday night.
Monday morning I let him out for a run while the children got ready for school. He didn’t come back. We thought we’d never see him again. On Friday evening, German was back again. We took him in, and again he stayed until Monday morning, when our housekeeper arrived. It went like this for almost 10 months. We looked forward to his coming each Monday morning he left home.

Are you in a bad mood? Don’t worry! According to a new Australian study, a bad mood can actually be good for you. The study showed that being sad could help people to judge others more correctly and was also good for the memory.
The study was carried out by Professor Joseph Forgas at the University of New South Wales.“People in a bad mood paid more attention to the people and things around them than happy people .Happy people were more likely to believe anything they were told,”said Forgas
For the study, Forgas and his team did a lot of experiments. During the experiments, they made the participants(參加者) feel happy or sad by watching films and thinking about good or bad things of the past.
In one of the experiments, happy and sad participants were asked to judge whether some wrong things were true or not. The results showed that people in a bad mood were less likely to believe that these things were true.

Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.
When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk around in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.
Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I would say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”
Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps. I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around (停留)for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friend!
Seeing friends you haven’t seen in a while can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(運動鞋). It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case (以防萬一)you don’t have time in the morning.
【小題1】The underlined phrase “kick off” in the second paragraph probably means “_____”.

A.startB.studyC.findD.teach
【小題2】The last paragraphs mainly tell us about ________.
A.what to know about a new school
B.how to prepare for a new school
C.what to do on your first day of school
D.how to spend your first day of school
【小題3】According to the passage you usually do everything on the first day of school except      .
A.introduce yourself

C.make new friends
D.go over your new lessons

Dear Eric:
Linda and I have been best friends since we were six years old. We often study and play together. It’s great! But she often gets unhappy when I get better grades than her –she really gets jealous. Should I keep taking her as my friend?
Yours,
Alice

Hi Alice,
I think friendship is important in our lives. You should talk to your friend. Tell her you’re both studying and it’s common that sometimes you get a better grade and sometimes she does better. Tell her you’re going to compete(比賽) with her and try to beat her in every test . maybe you can tell her that if she beats you, you’ll buy her some chocolate or something like that. If you can make your schoolwork into a game, you’ll both win in the long run (從長遠看), and you will both start to get better grades in your subjects.
