The Southern California (加利福尼亞州)wildfire started on Tuesday morning. By the end of the day, it covered 47 square miles. The fire changed the life in the area, causing hour-long traffic jams, and making the people leave their homes.

The fire travelled really fast. So the governor(州長(zhǎng))Jerry Brown acted quickly and sent a state of emergency(緊急情況) soon after the fire started. Usually the state of emergency comes much later, after a fire has caused serious problems over several days.

The government ordered the evacuation(疏散) of 34,000 homes and 87,000 people. When one family failed to move away, firefighters went to protect their home. Six of the firefighters were once trapped by the fire.“We just sat there and waited for the fire to blow over,”firefighter Cody Anderson says.

The Southern California fire wasn't the only one burning in the state. The Clayton fire in Northern California, burned more than 175 buildings by the end of last week. Now, the firefighters have put out 40% of the fire and some evacuated people are able to return to their homes. But firefighters will have to go on fighting the fire, because many buildings are sill in danger.

Good news is that on Tuesday afternoon the police said they caught the man who set the fire. He was Dam in Anthony Pashilk, a 40-year-old worker. The police believe he set fire in the state many times, including the Clayton fire.

Wednesday's weather will make fighting the Southern California fire difficult. Hot, dry conditions(條件) and strong wind may make the work even harder.

What season is it in October? If you ask people from the UK, they will tell you it’s “autumn”. But if you go to the US, you will find that people use both “autumn” and “fall”. Why does this season have two names in English?

According to a Dictionary.com, both words have been around for a long time, but neither of them was the first to describe this season. During this season, crops(莊稼) would become ripe and farmers would have a big harvest(豐收). So in old English, this season was simple called “harvest”.

Then, in the 1600s, more people left their farms and moved to cities. Wish fewer people farming, the word “harvest” become less useful English speakers needed a different name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during the season, so people started calling it “the fall of the leaf” or “fall” for short.

But at the end of the 1600s, autumn from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumns”, came to England. It gradually replaced(替代) “fall” as the word for this season.

At the same time, British people were making their first trips to North America. They brought both the words “fall” and “autumn” with them. That’s why today’s Americans have two names for one season.

Imagine having a printer that could make anything. Need new shoes? Just choose a style and size and then print some.

No machine can make all of these things, but 3-D printers are getting very close. Traditional printers put ink on paper. But 3-D printers work with plastic, metal or other materials, including food. Invented in the mid-1980s, 3-D printing is a new technology (技術(shù)).

In the past, 3-D printers were so expensive that only large companies could afford them. In the last one or two years, their cost has dropped greatly. Today, you can buy a 3-D printer for as little as $300. The technology offers the potential (可能性) to print anything at home. When you want something, you needn’t buy it in a store or order it from a factory.

3-D printing can be fun too. For the Valentine’s Day (情人節(jié)) last year, a Japanese company used a 3-D printer to make chocolate copies of people’s faces. At the Fashion Week in Paris, 3-D printing made an appearance too. The clothes were made for show, not for everyday use. But that could soon change. A designer says, “It will only be a matter of time before we see the clothing we wear today produced with this technology.”
