【題目】As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.
Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains(窗簾) seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination (想象) would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the "enemy(敵人) " would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn't let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.
One of the processes(過程) growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

【題目】One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese student of English, “You speak very good English.” But the student answered, “NO, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the Chinese student had not heard him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.” But the Chinese student sill kept saying “No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know what to say.
What’s wrong with the student’s answer? He didn’t accept a compliment(贊美詞)in the same way as the American people do. He should answer “thank you” instead of “no”. He really understood what the American boy had said, but he thought he should be modest(謙虛的).In the west, people will feel proud and confident when they are praised. So if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say “Thank you”. If someone says to a woman “You look so beautiful with the new clothes on.” She must be very happy and answer “Thank you”.
In our country we think being modest is a virtue(美德)and being proud is a bad thing, but in my opinion, being confident does not mean being proud, so sometimes you should be confident instead of being modest.
If you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well” while working in a western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No”, you will certainly be looked down
【1】 Why was the American boy surprised at the Chinese student’s answer?
A. Because he was expecting the Chinese student to say “Thank you”.
B. Because he wouldn’t like others to say “No”.
C. Because he could hardly hear what the student had said.
D. Because he wondered whether the student could really speak good English.
【2】As the student kept saying “No”, the American boy ________.
A. became disappointed B. didn’t know what to say
C. lost his interest D. got angry
【3】In the west, if you meet a friend who wears a really beautiful dress, you may say “________”.
A. Where do you buy it?
B. Could you give me your dress?
C. How beautiful you are today!
D. I want a dress like yours very much.
【4】 Why does a man in the west who asks for a job say something like “Yes, I can certainly do it”?
A. Because he is not modest.
B. Because he is confident and he wants to get the job.
C. Because he just wants to try.
D. Because he can do nothing but speak in that way.
【5】We can learn that the writer wants us to ________ through his passage.
A. be modest B. be confident

【題目】(改編)We sometimes have to meet some difficulties that we never expect, but we should develop a positive attitude to life. Keeping a positive attitude isn't always easy, especially when we go through a difficult time in our life. However, we know, only when we take a positive attitude, can we overcome the difficulties.
On July 23rd, 1993, Wang Jiapeng lost his legs when his plane crashed. Wang was only 12 years old. He felt he was the unluckiest person in the world. When he saw students with their schoolbags on their backs, the sound of his wheelchair made him sick. Wang’s mother took him to a special hospital in Beijing. She looked after him in the daytime and worked at night to make money. But after two years, Wang was still not able to leave the hospital. Wang’s mother became too tired to go on and one day she herself became a hospital patient! One morning she woke up and saw her son holding breakfast for her. Wang’s trip to the food shop was his first time outside the hospital in two years. The five-minute walk took him thirty minutes.
But he was finally able to make an important decision. He didn’t care how other people looked at him. He had to learn to do things himself.
For the next few years, Wang taught himself all his middle school subjects in the hospital and five years after the accident, he won a chance to study in a college in Norway. Wang learned to drive, go rock climbing and ski. He even won two gold medals for skiing in an international skiing competition.
“You are what you think you are,” said Wang. “If you think you’re disabled, you are. If you don’t think so, you aren’t.”
So we know that if you can keep a positive attitude, even when things aren't going well in your life, you are the true winner of life.
