When you send a letter or a postcard, you have to put stamps on the envelope or on the card. When did people first begin to use stamps? Who was the first to think of this idea?
In the early nineteenth century. People did not use stamps. They had to pay postage when they received letters. Sometimes they didn't want to receive a letter at all, but they had to pay money for it. They were unhappy about this. The postage was high at that time, because the post offices had to send many people to get the postage.
Rowland Hill was a school teacher in England. He was the first to think of using stamps in 1850s. He thought it would be much easier for people to use stamps. They could go to the post office to buy stamps and put them on envelopes before they sent the letters. The post office could just put seals on the stamps so that people could not use the stamps again. In this way, the post office did not need to send postmen to get postage. It only needed fewer postmen to send letters.
True or false:
(1) People began to use stamps at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
(2) Before stamps are used, postage was paid by the letter-receivers and was got by letter-senders.
(3) Rowland Hill gave the idea to use stamps.
(4) After stamps were used, people needn't pay postage.

“Well, Bill. I'm not sure whether to send you to heaven or hell. After all, you greatly helped society by putting a computer in almost every home, yet you also created that terrible Windows XP. I'm going to let you decide where you want to go.”
Bill replied,
“Well, what's the difference between the two?”God said,
“I'm willing to let you visit both places, to see if it will help your decision.”“Okay, then,”said Bill,“Let's try hell first.”
So Bill went to hell. It was a beautiful, clean, sandy beach with clear water and lots of beautiful women running around, laughing and playing about. The sun was shining; the temperature perfect. He was very pleased.
“This is great,”he told God.“If this is hell, I really want to see heaven.”
“Fine,”said God, and off they went.
Heaven was a place high in the clouds, beautiful and sunny, with angels flying about. It was nice, but not as nice as hell.
“Hmmm, I think I'd prefer hell,”he told God.
“Fine,”replied God,“as you desire(如你所愿).”
So Bill Gates went to hell.
Two weeks later, God decided to see how Bill was doing in hell. When he got there, he found Bill shackled
(披枷帶鎖)to a wall being burned by demons(魔鬼).“How is everything doing?”He asked Bill.
“This is terrible. This is nothing like the hell I visited two weeks ago. What happened to that other place, with the beaches and the beautiful women playing in the water?”
“Oh,”God said,“what you saw is a screensaver(屏幕保護)I designed by myself. Glad you like it!”
