What makes a person a scientist?Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”.It isn't the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools which makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information,is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further;he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer he gets to many questions is into a large set of ideas about how the world works.
The scientist's knowledge must be exact. There's no room for half right or right just half the time.He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions.
This is one reason why investigations are important in science.Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigation.Einstein's ideas were proved to be correct.A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.
1.What makes a scientist according to the passage?
A.The tools he uses. B.His ways of learning.
C.The way he uses his tools. D.The various tools he uses.
2.“…knowing how to investigate, how to discover information,is important to everyone.”The writer says this to show_______.
A.the importance of information
B.the difference between scientists and ordinary people
C.the importance of thinking
D.the difference between carpenters and ordinary people
3.A sound scientific theory should be one that_______.
A.works under one set of conditions at one time and also works under the same conditions at other times
B.leaves no room for improvement
C.doesn't allow any change even under different conditions
D.can be used for many purposes
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Scientists are different from ordinary people.
B.The Theory of Relativity.
C.Exactness is the core of science.
D.Exactness and way of using tools are the keys to making of a scientist.

It was in the Victorian Era(維多利亞時(shí)期) that the novel became the leading form of literature in English. Most writers were more concerned to meet the tastes of the middle class. The best known works of the period included the works of Charles Dickens and the Bronté sisters and others.
Charles Dickens came on the literary scene in the 1830s. Dickens wrote vividly about London life and the struggles of the poor. Most of his works were written in a very humorous style, which was popular with readers of all classes.
The Bronté sisters were English writers of the 1840s and 1850s. They began to write from early childhood. In 1846 they published the first book at their own expense as poets; however, their book attracted little attention, selling only two copies. Then the sisters turned to writing novels, each producing a novel in the following year.
An interest in rural matters and the changing social and economic situation of the countryside may be seen in the novels of Thomas Hardy and a number of others.
Literature for children developed as a single style. Some works became well-known, such as those of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Adventure novels were written for adults but are now generally grouped in the list for children. Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author at the end of the Victorian Era, best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters. In her thirties, Potter published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902.

D. He published the highly successful children's book.
2.Which is TRUE about the Bronté sisters?
A. They were English writers of the 1830s.
B. They paid to have their first book published.
C. They began their writing from adulthood.
D. Their first book was successful.
3.The author states in the last paragraph that ________.
A. society changed rapidly in the Victorian Era
B. Thomas Hardy was not as famous as Lewis Carroll
C. Edward Lear was famous for writing about animals
D. adventure novels were not written for children at first
4.This text is mainly about ________.
A. literature in the Victorian Era
B. writing styles in the Victorian Era
C. famous works in the Victorian Era
D. the importance of literature in the Victorian Era

Everybody knows about lots of relatively easy things on weight loss. 1. However, if you have ever tried some before without success, then the following guides could be more useful for your life.
There’s no magical diet.
We often think that if we can just discover the “right” kinds of foods, we’ll magically lose weight or maintain what we’ve lost. In fact there doesn’t seem to be any “right” diet, and there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that one particular diet will work better with an individual’s body. 2.
Dieting gets the better of exercising.
It is said that exercise is the key to weight loss—taking the stairs instead of the elevator will make a difference, for instance. 3. Decreasing food intake is much more effective than increasing physical activity to achieve weight loss. Of course, both together would be even better.
Work harder than other people.
Exercise may not help go back to what it was before you gained weight. So if you’ve been overweight and you lose weight, maintaining that loss means you’re probably going to have to work harder than other people. Building muscles can help your body burn a few more calories. 4. It seems unfair, but that’s the way it is.
5.
For energy balance, it’s the number of calories that counts. It’s certainly true at least in theory and sometimes in practice. You can gain weight eating too much healthy food as well as unhealthy food. So the point is not to question what a calorie is, but rather to understand that we need to exchange the calorie-packed foods for foods that are less calorie-dense and more nutritionally dense.
A. All calories are created equal.
B. Some of them are also extremely effective when actually carried out.
C. A calorie is a calorie!
D. We know pretty much that any diet will work if you follow it.
E. However, it’s much more efficient to cut calories.
F. Some of the calories we burn come from our basic exercise.
G. However, it’s also likely that you’ll have to do more in the long run.

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take friendship for granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few---for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy(親密) between them and the reasons for the shared interests vary enormously. As we get to know people, we take into account things like age, race, economic conditions, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of prime importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a marked difference in age and background.
Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, to have attitudes and interests in common ---they often talk about “being on the same wavelength.” It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to do friends favors and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and try to tolerate differences of opinion.
In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two persons. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.
1.According to the author, ____.
A. all those who get on well with each other are friends
B. friends are closer than people who just get on with each other
C. everyone understands clearly how to make friends
D. every student has 6 friends
2.In paragraph 2, “being on the same wavelength” means ____.
A. using the same frequency while taking
B. keeping the same friendly relationship as other people do
C. having similar ideas, beliefs, attitudes and interests
D. having the same background
3.Which of the following is not implied in the passage?
A. Even friends may have differences of opinion.
B. Friends never argue with each other.
C. It generally takes time for people to become close friends.
D. Someone’s habits may annoy his friends.
4.To strengthen friendly relationship, people ____.
A. must hold friendship ceremonies
B. have to eliminate(消除) differences in background
C. should make friends with those who are of the same age and of the same race
D. should support and understand each other through shared experiences and emotions
