BILL GATES has promised to give all of his US $ 58 billion fortune to charity—rather than leaving it for his children.
The founder of Microsoft, who steps down from his post Friday, said he wants to make a “positive contribution” to the world. He has promised to transfer his money to the charity he has set up with his wife Melinda, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which funds health and education projects around the world.
He revealed(透露) his decision a week before he steps down as executive chairman of Microsoft, the firm he founded more than 30 years ago. The 52?year?old will continue to work as non?executive chairman and will spend just one day a week at the business.
Speaking about the joint?decision he made regarding his fortune with his wife, he said,“We’ve chosen not to pass it on to our children. We want to give it back to society in the way that it will have the most positive impact.” He said he did not want to leave it in his will for his children and added,“It’s like saying which children are most important.”
In an interview with BBC’s Newsnight, he said:“I want to make a positive contribution to the world.”
Bill Gates will step down from his post Friday, 33 years after he founded Microsoft in 1975. His success with the computer giant has made him the richest man in the world for 13 years in a row according to Fortune magazine’s rich list.

He will be succeeded in his post by Steve Balmer, the co?chief executive since 2000. Although the move was announced two years ago and there has been lots of planning, many people speculate that Gates’ departure will leave a big gap in the firm.
Charlene Li, from Consultants Forrester Research, said:“What they’re going to lose is that founding focus, and the ability to rally the troops.”

閱讀下面的短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列小題。
Cell phones are everywhere-everywhere except Aztec High School.
A new policy put in place at the beginning of the school year by the Aztec School Board forbade cell phones from the school’s campus.
“They are interrupting the educational process,” said Kirk Carpenter, the Aztec High School headmaster. “There is no educational benefit from having them here.”
The new policy started recently afrer long discussions between school and district managers. Aztec school officials said that cell phone use had become a problem during testing sessions.
Carpenter said, “There are also a lot of issues with cell phones. The bottom line(問(wèn)題的關(guān)鍵) is that they are not in line with what we are trying to do bere, which is providing an education for our students.”
Although the headmaster has heard of no serious objections to the new rule, the complaint he hears most often is parents’ being concerned about contacting students directly in case of an emergency.
“That actually slows down the process,” said Carpenter. “If a parent calls a student’s cell phone, it still needs to go through the office. We can’t just let the student leave school. We don’t know who is on the line. They will still need to call the office to get their children free to leave.”
“If you need to contact a student, you can                      and they will give a message to the student. It still works well,” he added.
Aztec official Linda Paul said, although she never imagined the effect cell phones would have on education, she supports the decision made by the school. Paul added that AHS is not the only campus in the district to have taken such measures.
Cell phone use for teachers, of course, is a different matter. “We hope our teachers know enough not to be on the phone during class, ” Paul said. “I have never seen one of my teachers on the phone during class. ”

A.Join learning communities and help each other.
B.Expect problems, never be disappointed, and gradually you 'll make it .
C.Anytime is learning time.
D.Get interested and arouse your desire for knowledge.
E.Cover the same ground from different angles.
F.Try to be a good and effective learner.
As a student, how we can learn our lessons effectively is a common problem which is always puzzling us.If you follow suggestions below, I'm sure you'll find the solution easily.
61.
Your interest in the subject is the essential driver of success. You can' t learn what you do not want to learn.Emotion is an important part of the learning process. If you are even moderately interested in a subject, give yourself a chance. The key is to get started. If you can create some pleasurable routines, you may find that the subject grows on you.You must always rem learning is just like eating. You don' t expect to enjoy your food without appetite. Therefore, you should always try to arouse your interest and desire for knowledge if you want to leam well.
62.__________
Don't expect to understand things, or remember too much, the first time you study them.Think about what problem you will meet with in your study, so that you are well -prepared for it.Never be disappointed no matter what happens.Trust that things will get clearer as your brain comes to grips (理解) with new information. It is like a jig - saw puzzle or a cross - word puzzle. As you start to put the pieces together, or string the words together, the full picture becomes clearer. The brain learns all the time, but on its own schedule.Learning does not take place according to a schedule laid down by a curriculum or teacher.Keep at it, and you will gradually find that things that seem difficult at first, will become second nature with time.
63.
Your brain is struggling to form patterns to cope with new input from your learning activities.Sometimes, no matter how long you focus on one subject, your brain is not going to pick it up.If you are stuck, move on.Then cover the same general information from a different source, a different book, or a blog, or an online lecture or a video.Try to become a grazing learner, wandering about the countryside, rather than a feed - lot learner, just standing there in one spot, chewing the same bale of hay.The broader your base, the easier it is to leam.Just as the "rich get richer" , the more you know, the more you can learn.
64.
Take full advantage of the Internet, blogs, and various mobile devices, not to mention good old-fashioned books and magazines.Learn during "dead time".Listen in your car, on the train, or while jogging.Have your learning with you while waiting in the doctor's office, or listen while checking out at the supermarket.Anytime is learning time.Remember, you are learning through exposure, not by nailing things down.It is more like moisture accumulation in a cloud, rather than building a brick wall.
65.
The "loneliness of the distance learner" is a thing of the past.Join a learning community on the web, where members share their knowledge and experience.Search for the communities that suit your interests and learning style. You will find encouragement, advice and stimulus from fellow learners, as well as from tutors, teachers and coaches. In these communities, you can measure your progress against your own goals, or compare your experience with that of other learners. You can even teach and help others, which is a great way to learn.

Thirty years ago, when the movie version of my novel Jaw was published, few people including me knew very much about great white sharks. For hundreds of generations, we humans have been taught to fear and hate sharks, and the movie touched a nerve of horror.
Now something long thought impossible has happened. A great white shark was successfully held in capacity for several months. In August last year a very young female great white shark was caught accidentally in a fisherman's net off Huntington Beach, California, and then kept in an ocean pen (欄柵) for 25 days. After being moved to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (水族館), she grew well in the million-gallon Outer Bay Exhibit. She was so lovely that people all liked her very much. Perhaps she was too young to understand that the big tank was not her natural environment, because she didn't hit her head against the walls in an attempt to swim away as others of her kind have done. And she began to feed almost immediately on small fish offered to her on a pole. In the months that followed, the shark suffered no serious injuries, caught no diseases, and grew noticeably larger, breaking all records for great white sharks in capacity. The longest that any other great white shark had been held was 16 days.
Until February 23, that is, when she hit and killed a soup fin shark (翅鯊) , as she grew bigger and her behavior grew more aggressive, officials at the Aquarium knew the time had come. On March 31, after 198 days in the aquarium, the great white shark was released into the Pacific.
Scientists still have a lot to learn about sharks, especially great white sharks which are now considered to be in danger. Scientists do know that sharks are necessary to ocean health. Remove any significant animal from the sea food chain and you will risk destroying the balance of nature.
72. We can see that in the film Jaw the shark was once described as______.
A. a pet of children       B. a horror to human beings
C. a friend of the aged D. a guard of its owner
73. Different from the others of her kind, the young female great white shark was somewhat _____in the beginning.
A. terrible and dangerous      B. fierce and cruel  C. loyal and friendly    D. gentle and lovely
74. By saying that "officials at the aquarium knew the time had come", the writer probably means that the female great white shark______.
A. had to be killed    B. escaped from the big tank
C. had to be set free         D. began to hit and kill other animals
75. What conclusion can be drawn from the text?
A. We should protect great white sharks as well as other ocean animals.
B. The female great white shark will be attacked by some other animals.
C. Great white sharks are becoming more and more
D. We should kill the enemies of white sharks in the oceans.

A proverb(諺語(yǔ)) is a short , well-known saying that expresses a common truth or belief. Proverbs are popular around the world. Many proverbs give advice on how to live. Some proverbs are hundreds of years old, but they are still used today.
For example, my son is just like his father in many ways. We often say the two of them prove the proverb that the apple does not far from the tree.
My daughter is very short. She would like to be taller. But I tell her that good things come in small packages. Some valuable things are very small, like diamonds and other jewels. But I also tell my children that all that glitters is not gold. Something may look valuable, but may not really be valuable. Also, I tell them do not judge a book by its cover. You should not judge something only by its appearance.
Sometimes I tell my children to cooperate to solve a problem. After all, two heads are better than one. But another proverb says too many cooks spoil the soup. If too many people try to do something, then the job will not be done well.
I also tell my children that two wrongs do not make a right. You should not do something bad just because someone did the same to you.
Some people are pessimists while other people are optimists. Pessimists always think about how bad things are or will be; optimists might say that every cloud has a silver lining and they always look on the bright side. Other people are both pessimists and optimists. They hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
Some people often worry about what they will do in a situation that might happen in the future. We could tell them do not cross that bridge until you come to it.
It is usually much better to prevent a problem from happening than it is to find ways to solve it. So we say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
