dementia compared with men and women who were isolated and prone to distress,  they reported in the
journal Neurology.
"In the past,  studies have shown that chronic distress (長期抑郁) can affect parts of the brain,
possibly leading to dementia,  " HuiXin Wang of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden,  who led the study,

From the coldest arctic ice to the hottest deserts you will find mammals living and thriving(興旺).There seems to be no climate that they can't adapt to, however changeable it may be.Why can mammals adapt to so many different habitats? There is a good reason for this-mammals have the ability to keep their body at a constant temperature whatever the weather. They are “warm-blooded”.

Mammals achieve this by chemically “burning” their food as fuel inside their bodies. This is kept under tight control by a region of the brain that acts like a thermostat(恒溫器), and this makes sure that the mammal's body temperature stays about the same.

A constant body temperature is a great advantage for mammals because all the chemical processes that go on inside a living body are likely to happen more slowly at low temperatures and faster at higher temperatures.Mammals can regulate their temperature at the best condition for all these processes, allowing them to be active at very cold or very hot periods and to keep up tiring activity for a long time.Animals such as lizards(蜥蜴)rely on moving in and out of the warm sunlight to regulate their body temperature. They slow down when they can't warm up and may die if they can't get away from heat. They also tend to overheat quickly when they are active as their muscles produce warmth.

Using food energy to keep body temperature constant is expensive, and since mammals need to be efficient at keeping the warmth they create inside themselves, they often have fur and a cover of fat under their skin to prevent heat from escaping. To help lose heat when they are too hot, they have sweat glands(汗腺)that take the heat away from the skin through evaporating(蒸發(fā))water. This means, though, that they need to drink more than other animals.

The easy way out isn't always easiest . I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug , my husband of one month , to a special meal . I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu(菜譜) which included homemade bread . Knowing the bread would take time , I started on it as soon as Doug left for work . As I was not experienced in cooking , I thought if a dozen was good , two dozens would be better , so I doubled(加倍)everything . As Doug loved oranges , I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl . Soon there was a sticky dough (面團) covered with ugly yellowish marks . Realizing I had been defeated , I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work , I went on preparing the rest of the meal , and , when Doug got home , we sat down to eat Cornish chicken with rice . He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed . Twice he got up and went outside , saying he thought he heard a noise . The third time he left , I went to the windows to see what he was doing . Looking out , I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin , holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container . When I came out of the house , he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish bin . Picking up the stick again , he held the lid up enough for me to see . I felt cold . But I stepped closer and looked harder . Without doubt it was my work . The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母)made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing .It looked like some unknown being from outer space. I could see why Doug was so shaken. I had to admit what the 'living thing” was and why it was there . I don't know who was more embarrassed(尷尬)by the whole thing - Doug or me.

The writer's purpose in writing this story is ___________

Why did the woman's attempt at making the bread turn out to be unsuccessful?

A.The canned orange had gone bad.

B.She didn't use the right kind of flour.

C.The cookbook was hard to understand.

D.She did not follow the directions closely.

Why did the woman put the dough in the rubbish bin?

A.She didn't see the use of keeping it

B.She meant to joke with her husband.

C.She didn't want her husband to see it .

D.She hoped it would soon dry in the sun.

What made the dough in the rubbish bin look frightening?

A.The rising and falling movement.

B.The strange-looking marks.

第三部分:閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。
Imagine life as a game in which you are playing some five balls in the air. You name them-work, family, health, friends and spirit, and you’re keeping all these balls in the air.
You understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably (不可逆轉(zhuǎn)地) scuffed (磨損), marked, damaged or even broken into pieces. They will never be the same. You must understand that and try for balance in your life. How?
Don’t undermine (逐漸損害) your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different and each of us is special. Don’t set your goals by what other people consider important. Only you know what is the best for you. Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart. Hold on to them as you would to life, for without them, it’s meaningless. Don’t let life slip through your fingers by living in the past or in the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life. Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going. Don’t use time or words carelessly. Life is not a race, but a journey to be enjoyed slowly each step of the way. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift. That’s why we call it – the present.
56. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. Today Is A Present    B. How to Live Your Life
C. Life Is A Game         D. Imagine Life as a game
57. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. not only where you live , but also where you’re going to live
B. all over the world
C. not only what you have done, but what you are going to do as well
D. the places you have been to as well as the places you are going to
58. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. You should try your best to keep balance in your life.
B. It’s unnecessary to compare yourself with others.
C. Life is just like a race.
D. Everyone has his own best points.
