The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California is one of the world's most beautiful bridges. It is also one of the most visited places in the world. Vehicles cross the bridge an average of 41 million times each year. More than 1,800 hundred million vehicles have used the bridge since it opened more than 70 years ago.

The bridge was painted “International Orange” because that color went well with the natural surroundings. The color also is easier to see in the heavy fog that often covers the area. But the Golden Gate Bridge was not named for its orange color. It was named for the body of water that it crosses, the Golden Gate Strait.

The Golden Gate Strait is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The Golden Gate Bridge links the city of San Francisco with Marin County, California.

Planning for the bridge began in the 1920s when the area around San Francisco was growing. People living in the area needed another way to get to the city besides small ferries.

Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer for the project. Work began in 1934. Mr.Strauss demanded the strongest safy protections in the history of bridge building. These included the first use of “hard hats” to protect the workers' heads and special glasses to protect their eyes.

A special safety net was suspended(掛) under the bridge. This net saved the lives of 19 men during the construction. However, 11 other workers were killed when they fell from the bridge through the net. Still, this was a new safety record for the time.

The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937. It extends 1,280 meters across the water. The total length is 2,737 meters. It was the largest suspension bridge in the world until 1964.That is when the Verrazano Narrows Bridge opened in New York City. Today, the Golden Gate Bridge is the ninth longest suspension bridge in the world.

1.The Golden Gate Bridge was named after ________.

A.the local climate

B.the color of a paint

C.the strait it crosses

D.its natural surroundings

2.The purpose of suspending a special safety net is to ________.

A.protect the environment

B.make construction easier

C.prevent workers from falling

D.save building materials from falling

3.What do we know about Joseph Strauss?

A.He attached importance to the workers' safety.

B.His safety measures were not of practical value.

C.He built the first suspension bridge in the world.

D.He demanded strong measures to ensure the safety of the bridge.

4.The passage is written to ________.

A.invite readers to San Francisco

B.introduce the Golden Gate Bridge

C.describe how the Golden Gate Bridge was built

D.tell the story of an engineer called Joseph Strauss

Everyone worries about exams, but test anxiety is in another league, causing such fear that it is impossible to do your best. Does your mind go blank in exams? Do you become distracted? Do you score much lower on exams than on homework? Then you may have what psychologists call test anxiety.

Test anxiety involves severe stress before, during or after exams, making it impossible to do your best. It can make your heart feel as if it is racing, and you may submit to (屈從于) “negative self-talk”, convincing yourself you are going to fail or upset. These stressful thoughts, not surprising, can block your brain’s ability to find what is stored in its memory, as well as making it harder to understand the questions and organize your thoughts. Is it possible to stop test anxiety?

Developing good study habits, understanding the exam format (格式) and marking scheme (評(píng)分方案) can all help to reduce anxiety. But for a greater effect, other methods are also needed, such as relaxation techniques in which you lie down before the exam, close your eyes and focus on breathing while tensing and relaxing group muscles in turn (legs, arms and stomach).

A study looked at anxious students in maths exams and concluded that writing about how worried you feel before the exam may also reduce anxiety.

Be as prepared as possible before the exam, arrive early, and repeat positive statements such as: “Everyone feels anxious; I know I can do this.” Just as in a race, do not look at what everyone else around you is doing. Focus on the paper in front of you. Do a quick skim to evaluate the feel of the overall test. If you feel nervous, take deep breaths and remember that it is just a test.

1.Paragraph 2 mainly talks about ________.

A. what causes test anxiety

B. how to deal with test anxiety

C. what effects test anxiety brings about

D. why everyone worries about exams

2.According to Paragraph 4, a study is mentioned to ________.

A. explain it is easy to get around test anxiety

B. introduce another good approach to handling test anxiety

C. confirm that maths exams are more likely to cause anxiety

D. make a conclusion about how to overcome test anxiety

3.Which of the following shows the structure of the text?

Homework is a major part of going to school: It's your teachers' way of evaluating(評(píng)價(jià)) how much you understand of what's going on in class. 1. Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.

Dolphins (海豚) live in a dark underwater world. It’s often impossible to see each other or anything else around them, so sound plays an important role in their survival. To communicate with each other, dolphins produce all kinds of sounds.

Only other dolphins understand what the sounds mean. Scientists haven’t uncovered their secret communication, except for one kind of whistle. It might last less than a second, but this whistle is a big deal. Why? Because these whistles are actually names of dolphins — and every dolphin has one. Scientists call these sounds a “signature whistle.” When other dolphins hear the whistle, they know which dolphin is calling.

Dolphins often hunt by themselves but still need to stay connected to the group. Since they can’t always see each other, dolphins use their signature whistles to check in with other dolphins hundreds of yards away. “In coastal areas, dolphins exchange whistles even when they’re a third of a mile apart,” says Greg Campbell, who studies animals. That means dolphins shout out to group members that might be nearly five football fields away.

What’s amazing is who names the baby dolphin. Not the mother. Not an auntie dolphin or another group member. Scientists believe the baby dolphin itself comes up with the signature whistle. Like human babies, a baby dolphin plays with sounds throughout its first year. While testing its sound skills, a baby dolphin is doing something amazing. It’s creating or figuring out its signature whistle. How or why it chooses its signature whistle is not clear. Studies show that most of the time the signature whistle is nothing like its mother’s or group members’ whistles.

When the baby dolphin is about a year old, its signature whistle is set. It repeats it often so the other dolphins learn to recognize it.

Deciphering(破譯) dolphin names is just the beginning of figuring out what dolphins communicate about. Do they chat about sharks? Discuss the tides? Maybe they even have a name for people. Someday scientists are to decipher the rest of dolphins’ communication.

1.Sound is important for dolphins because of ________.

A.their poor sense of direction

B.their living environment

C.their strong enemies

D.their big groups

2.The dolphin’s signature whistle ________.

A.lasts a long time

B.can travel long distances

C.is especially helpful in hunting

D.can be recognized by other animals

3.The author writes the text mainly to ________.

A.encourage readers to study dolphins

B.tell readers how dolphins communicate

C.show how lovely and clever dolphins are

D.introduce a special sound made by dolphins

4.A baby dolphin gets its name ________.

A.soon after it was born

B.a(chǎn)ccording to its size

C.a(chǎn)ll by itself

D.with the help of its group
