Protagoras was among the great teachers of ancient Athens. He taught many subjects, including the laws of argument(辯論) and the right use of language. It is said that he was the first teacher to accept money for his services.

A student, Evalthus, heard of this famous teacher and asked him to give him lessons. However, Evalthus didn’t want to pay for his lessons at once, and after some discussion it was finally agreed between them that Evalthus should pay only if he won his first case in the court. For if he won, it would prove that he had been taught well.

The lessons began and Evalthus proved himself to be a good student. But he refused to pay Protagoras anything at the end of his studies.

Protagoras therefore took Evalthus to the court and told the judges that he wanted his money. He explained that he must be paid whether he won or lost the case. “Whatever you decide,” he declared(宣稱)to the judges, “ I must be paid. For if you decide in my fovor , then I win the case, and so I must be paid . But If you decide against me, then Evalthus has won his first case in the court; according to our agreement, he must pay his lessons. Therefore I shall get my money whatever happens.”

The Athenian judges found no fault in it, so they asked Evalthus to reply.

“No, it’s quite clear,” said Evalthus, “ that I need not pay. If the judged decide in my favor, then I have won the case, and I need not to pay. But if Protagoras wins, then I have lost my first case. Therefore, according to our agreement, I do not have to pay. So I need not pay in any event.”

As both arguments appeared to be faultless, the judges were unable to come to a decision. They therefore ordered the two men to appear before them again one hundred years later.

1.Evalthus would pay Protagoras _______________.

A. before he started his lessons

B. after he finished his lessons

C. after the court decided against him

D. after the court proved that he was taught well

2.What do we know about Protagoras?

A. He won the judges’ favor in the end and got his money.

B. He was probably the first teacher to accept money for his lessons.

C. He didn’t teach Evalthus well because Evalthus didn’t pay.

D. He was not confident of his winning the case in the court.

3.Why did the judged ask Protagoras and Evalthus to come to the court one hundred years later?

A. They couldn’t make a decision.

B. They needed to think it over again.

C. They wanted to make fun of them.

D. They wanted more money from them.

4.What is probably the best title for the text?

A. A Smart Student---- Evalthus

B. A Great Teacher---Protagoras

C. Come Here One Hundred Years Later

D. A Fight Between Teacher and Student

If you will be cycling, you will need to know what these traffic signs and signals mean.

A sign like this one means that there is a bike lane(道). If there is a bike lane, you are required to use it. If there is not a bike lane, you should ride with traffic as far to the right side of the road as possible.

When the signal light turns green, cars go. When you cross the street at a signal light, you should wait for the walk signal. Be sure to look carefully to the left, right and left again, before crossing the street.

When the signal light turns yellow, car drivers should slow down and prepare to stop. You should not cross if the light is yellow. The light is about to turn red, and cars will enter the intersection(十字路口).

This signal is the WALK sign. It has a picture of a person walking instead of using the word WALK.

This signal is the DON’T WALK sign. It is part of the signal with the picture of a person walking. This is a picture of a red hand, meaning you should stop. You should wait to cross the street until the green picture of the person walking is showing.

Car drivers and bikers must come to a complete stop at STOP signs.

A yield sign means to slow down and be ready to stop. If there are pedestrians(行人)or vehicles in or nearing the intersection, you must stop. If there is no traffic in or nearing the intersection and it is safe, you may go through.

This sign means you are coming to a crosswalk. Car drivers and bikers must stop to allow people in the crosswalk to cross the street.

Millions of people all over the world use the word OK. In fact, some people say the word is used more often than any other word in the world. OK means all right or acceptable. It expresses agreement or approval.

1. Some people say it came from the Native American Indian tribe known as the Choctaw(喬克托語(yǔ)). The Choctaw word “okeh” means the same as the American word okay. Experts say early explorers in the American West spoke the Choctaw language in the nineteenth century.

But many people doubt this. Language expert Allen Walker Read wrote about the word “OK” in reports published in the 1960s. He said the word began being used in the 1830s. 2. Some foreign-born people wrote “all correct” as “o-l-l-k-o-r-r-e-c-t”, and used the letters OK. Other people say a railroad worker named Obadiah Kelly invented the word long ago. They said he put the first letters of his name--O and K--on each object people gave him to send on the train.

3. The organization supported Martin Van Buren for president in 1840. They called their group the OK club. The letters were taken from the name of the town where Martin was born--Old Kinderhook, New York.

Then there is the expression A-OK. It is a space-age expression. It was used in 1961 during the flight of astronaut Alan Shepard. He was the first American to be launched into space. His flight ended when his spacecraft landed in the ocean, as planned. Shepard reported, “Everything is A-OK.” 4. One story says it was first used during the early days of the telephone to tell an operator that a message had been received.

There are also funny ways to say okay. 5. These expressions were first used in the 1930s. Today, a character on the American television series “The Simpsons” says it another way. He says okely-doke.

A. Some people say okey-dokey or okey-doke.

B. Still others say a political organization invented the word.

C. Therefore, it has become popular in that area from then on.

D. But many experts don’t agree on what the expression means.

E. Still, language experts do not agree about where the word came from.

F. It was a short way of writing a different spelling of the word “all correct”.

G. However, some experts say the expression did not begin with the space age.
