Dear Chen Li,

I’m glad to hear from you. You asked me about the difficulties you may meet with when you get here in UK.

Dear Chen Li,

I’m glad to hear from you. You asked me about the difficulties you may meet with when you get here in UK. Now, I’d like to tell you something about it.

First, you may have the problem about the language you think you are well prepared. You may find it difficult to communicate with the natives, because many of them have a strong accent. Besides, you may not get used to the western food here or even hate to have it. What’s more, you may feel lonely and miss your family and friends, especially in the very beginning.

However, you needn’t worry about it. Several weeks later, you will get used to everything here and love the place, and I’ll also try my best to help you when necessary.

Best wish es!

Yours,

Li Hua

Next time you hear a funny joke you’d better not laugh too hard. According to a paper published by the British Medical Journal, laughter isn’t always the best medicine. Sometimes it can even be harmful. Professor Robin Ferner from the University of Birmingham, one of the authors of the study, found that bad things could happen to people who laughed too much. He says: “We found people with heartbeat problems which had stopped their heart, we found people who had fainted(昏倒), and we found people who’d dislocated their jaws or burst their lungs.”

It seems that laughing can be no laughing matter. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Professor Ferner says there are benefits to laughing when you want to lose weight, for example. Yes, that’s right: laugh and be slimmer! Professor Ferner explains that: “You use energy when you laugh, you move your diaphragm(橫膈膜), you expand your lungs, and both those things can be helpful.”

According to the research, laughing for a quarter of an hour can burn up to 40 calories, and if you laughed all day you’d use up about 2,000 calories, which is what most people consume in a day. But don’t do that or you might end up with a painful jaw. Ouch! Or you might find people looking at you in a funny way.

But I don’t want to finish this article leaving you feeling desperate. Laughter comes naturally for most of us. Babies begin to laugh at around 3-6 months. So give in to your sense of humor and keep smiling. Life is short anyway.

1.Laughing too much may cause the following harmful results EXCEPT_________.

A. diaphragm movement B. heart stop

C. lung burst D. jaw dislocation

2.The underlined phrase “doom and gloom” in Paragraph 2 probably means_______.

A. nervous B. funny C. painful D. hopeless

3.How many calories can you use if you laugh for half a day?

A. About 40. B. About 2,000.

C. About 1,000. D. About 2,040.

4.What is the author’s attitude towards laughing in the last paragraph?

A. Uninterested. B. Favorable.

C. Worried. D. Disapproving.

It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War III. She’ll talk about my lack of a bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.

“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she bemoans all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I’m the type of person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of fame (名聲) or salary.

I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 630 am and usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6 pm. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

B. doesn’t think the writer should be a doctor

3.The underlined word “bemoans” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _____.

A. agrees B. shouts

4.Which of following statements is probable TRUE about the writer?

“Mainland couples who give birth to a second child in Hong Kong will be fined for breaking the family planning policy.” a senior official has warned. As more women flock to Hong Kong to give birth to their second child, Zhang Feng, family planning department director of Guangdong Province, stressed that this violated China’s policies. “And those who are government employees will even be dismissed from their posts.” he said.

''It doesn't matter if they give birth to their second child on the mainland or in other countries and regions; they have violated the country's policies and the province's regulations''.

He said that some families had been punished in the past few months after having a second child in Hong Kong, but gave no details.

Zhang made his remarks when a Hong Kong newspaper carried a controversial notice claiming residents' medical services had been affected by the growing number of mainland women who arrive in the city to give birth and gain right of abode (居住) there.

According to statistics revealed by Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, about 88,000 babies were born in Hong Kong in 2010, but more than 41,000 or 47 percent, were to mainland couples, including a large number from Guangdong.

Hong Kong has limited the number of mainland women permitted to give birth in the city at 34,000 this year.

The issue also has caused calls for an amendment(修正) to Hong Kong's Basic Law so that babies born to mainland women are no longer granted permanent right of abode.

''I support Hong Kong government's decision to reduce or limit the number for mainland women giving birth in Hong Kong.'' Zhang said.

Many people once thought that air pollution had a bad influence upon only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. Today, we know that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is nearly worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the entire eastern half of the United States and led to health warnings even in rural areas away from any major concentration of factories and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists feel that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide( 二氧化碳) in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a“greenhouse effect” - holding in heat reflected from the earth and raising the world’s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world’s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be under water.

Another opinion, less widely held, is that increasing tiny substances in the atmosphere are blocking sunlight and lowering the earth’s temperature-a result that would be equally disastrous.A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to new ice age and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report prepared by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very likely). Perhaps, if we are very lucky, the two tendencies will make up for each other and the world’s temperature will stay about the same as it is now.

1.As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution _____.

A. caused widespread damage in the countryside

B. affected the entire eastern half of the United States

C. almost brought worldwide effect

D. existed merely in urban and industrial areas

2.As far as the greenhouse effect is concerned, the author _____________.

A. shares the same view with the scientists

B. is uncertain of its consequence

C. rejects it as being ungrounded

D. thinks that it will increasingly destroy the world

3. It can be inferred from the passage that ____________.

A. raising the world’s temperature a little would not do much harm to life on earth

B. lowering the world’s temperature a little would lead to agricultural disasters

C. almost no temperature changes have occurred over the past decade

D. the world’s temperature will remain constant in the years to come

4.This passage is primarily concerned with _____________.

A. the greenhouse effect in the world

B. the measures to adjust the climate

C. the potential effect of air pollution

D. the measures to protect the environment
