5.My daughter recently asked me what a travel agency does.There is one located on our street and it has just been completely rebuilt.I told her that they helped people book their trips and vacations."Why haven't we ever been there?"she wanted to know."Because we do everything ourselves online these days,"I explained."But why do it yourself if other people want to do it for you?"she wondered out loud.
The answer is that the travel agency makes a little bit of money on each ticket you book through them.If you book your ticket yourself online,you save that money.Saving money sounds great except that when you think about it you typically spend three evenings comparing prices to end up saving﹩30on a﹩300trip.All those﹩30discounts add up of course so I guess we should be happy with that.
Still,how bad is it really to pay someone﹩30and trust them to buy you something wonderful?Wouldn't you say your free evenings are worth more than﹩10a piece?
Consider books for a moment.Buying your book at Amazon saves you maybe 30% to 40% on each book.Add to that the convenience of shopping from home and getting the package delivered to your home address.So far so good.
Unfortunately,that does mean you spend too much time browsing Amazon.com while you could do something fun instead.Like maybe reading an actual book.
Then the package arrives and you aren't home and end up having to pick it up at the local post-office.All in all I wonder how much time I end up investing(投入) in the whole process.Time sounds free,but to most of us,it is more valuable than money.
The Internet Economy promised to get rid of the middle-men and we loved it.Somehow,I'm starting to get the feeling that we ourselves ended up doing the work of that middle-men we were so eager to get rid of.
In any project you can always pick two of these:fast,cheap or good.We seem to have focused a lot on‘cheap'and‘good'but the extra time we need to invest to also keep it‘fast'comes out of our own pockets.You can always make more money but you can never make more time.

C.It's hard for us to be happy with﹩30because we have wasted a lot of time.

15.A new study has been carried to test the role of story telling in lowering blood pressure.Dr.Thomas Houston,a professor of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, led a group of scientists that investigated how pre-recorded videos of hypertension (高血壓) patients'talking about their medical histories helped another group of patients with high blood pressure to control their condition over several months.
Houston was surprised by their studies that suggested that communication can be a powerful tool in medicine. They showed that those who had had similar experiences, when talking to someone with a similar background, could help change their behavior to become healthier.Hypertension is difficult to control, since it is dependent on diet, exercise and mental state.Medical treatments with drugs, and lifestyle therapies(療法) have been relatively ineffective because people find it hard to follow those medical requirements.
In the test, his team carefully chose their story-tellers from 230 members of a patients'community with whom they could most easily relate.Next, they divided their study population into two groups. One received three interactive (互助) DVDs containing the tellers'stories of their experiences in living with and treating their hypertension. The other were given educational discs on an unrelated health topic. The study volunteers reported that they had listened to the DVDs,and after three months, those who heard the stories of the hypertensive patients lowered their blood pressure.
While the study did not address how the story-telling influenced the patients'behavior,Houston suspects that watching patients of similar backgrounds who had a similar medical experience helped to motivate them to seek medical help to their hypertension. They found that after six months the difference in blood pressure between those who watched the story-tellers and those who observed the unrelated videos remained, suggesting that the story-telling continued to have an effect.

16.In many parts of the world, cars play an important role in daily life and many societies would not exist without them.(71)EBut this is the prediction made by a team of transport researchers who are taken seriously, not only by government but also by ear manufacturers.
The Human Science and Advanced Technology Institute at Loughborough in the UK is part of an international research program.(72)AThat will mean much saving,no accidents and better use of roads. The super-intelligent car of the 21st century will drive itself(73)C,.Instead,we will have a choice of cars and change them as frequently as we change our clothing.
According to Dr.David Davis, who leads the research team, these predictions are based on the rising cost of the car culture, which had blocked up our cities, polluted our air,and caused more deaths than both world wars put together.
Davis says, cars will be fitted with some intelligent devices(裝置) to regulate(調(diào)節(jié)) the distance between one car and another.(74)GComputers are much safer drivers than people,so cars in a road train will be able to drive much closer together than cars driven by people.
By 2010,Dr.David Davis believes, car technology will give motorists a clear view of the road, whatever the weather conditions,by projecting an image(影像)of the road ahead on to the car's windscreen(75)D.Cars will be connected by an electronic tow bar to the car in front to form"road-trains"."The front vehicle in such a train burns the normal amount."says Davis."But all the others in the train would burn about ten percent of the normal amount, and so produce about ten percent of the pollution."

A.The team there believes that by 2030 all cars will be computerized.
B.They believe that cars will become more important in 20 years.
C.And it will not be owned by one individual.
D.And by 2030,cars will travel in line, linked to each other electronically.
E.So the idea that in 20 years'time,no one will own cars may be hard to believe.
F.Every driver will use less fuel in the car he owns.
G.The car will automatically speed up,or slow down,to match the speed of the car in front.

As the bus approaches the Magnificent Mile,a voice suddenly rings out:"Attention!Attention!"Papers rattle (發(fā)出細(xì)小聲).Necks crane (伸長)."This is your driver speaking."
