Having bad feeling about world? “Cheer up.” says science writer Matt Ridley. “The world has never been a better place to live in, and it will keep on getting better both for humans and for nature.” 1.
1. 2.
It is reported that there are more than ten billion different products for sale in London alone. Even allowing for the many people who still live in poverty, our own generation has access to more nutritious food, more convenient transport, bigger houses, and better cars. 3. This will continue as long as we use these things to make other things. The more we specialize and exchange, the better off we'll be.
2.Brilliant advances
One reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longer lived and freer than ever before is that the four most basic human needs—food, clothing, fuel and shelter—have grown a lot cheaper. Take one example. In 1800 a candle providing one hour's light cost six hours' work. In the 1880s the same light from an oil lamp took 15 minutes' work to pay for. 4. Today it's half second.
3.Let's not kill ourselves for climate change
5. A child that dies from indoor smoke in a village, where the use of fossil-fuel (化石燃料) electricity is forbidden by well-meaning members of green political movements trying to save the world, is just as great a tragedy as a child that dies in a flood caused by climate change. If climate change proves to be mild, but cutting carbon causes real pain, we may well find that we have stopped a nose-bleed by putting a tourniquet (止血帶) around our necks.
A. Ridley calls himself a rational optimist—rational, because he's carefully weighed the evidence.
B. Overreaction to climate change could prove just as damaging to human welfare as climate change itself.
C. Shopping fuels invention.
D. And, of course, we earn more pounds and dollars than any who lived before us.
E. In 1950 it was eight seconds.
F. It’s high time that we took immediate action to fight climate change.
G. Here's how he explains his views.

On Wednesday of this Culture & Art Week, we invite the American teacher Prof. Hudson to our school. He gave a class to us and his class left us a very deeper impression.
Prof. Hudson had a free talk with us in the simple but humorous English. He spoke slowly and clearly so that we could follow her well. In the same time, he would repeat that we did not understand.
Greatly encouraging, most of us took an active part his class.
From his lessons, we came to the conclusion that it is not so difficult to learning English well.

My father is middle school teacher. He is a middle-aged man, so he works like a young man, full of energies. Every evening he is busy correcting his students’ exercises, prepare his lessons and doing some reading. Sometime when I wake up at midnight, I find him still busy on his work. Father puts all his heart and soul into his work. He cares for his students very much. If only his students have any difficulty, he will try his best to help us. When Father is in hospital last year, all his students went to see him. I was deep moved. Such is my father, and I love him very much.

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard(警惕).
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor café. We talked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?
The next day dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

MONTREAL (Reuters) – Crossing the US-Canada border(邊界)to go to church on a Sunday cost a US citizen $10,000 for breaking Washington’s strict new security(安全)rules.
The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church.
There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and the US which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs(海關(guān))station in this area is closed on Sundays, so be just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later, Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally(非法).
Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border checkpoint.
Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’m living in a prison,” he said.

B.a(chǎn) race across the fields
C.a(chǎn) roundabout way of travelling
D.a(chǎn) journey in the mountain area
4.What would be the best title for the text?

B.A Special Border Pass
C.An Unguarded Border
