The United States Environmental Protection Agency says only seven per cent of plastic waste in the United States is recycled each year. A new compa?ny in northern New York says it can increase that percentage. It also says it can help the United States reduce the amount of oil it imports.
The company has a machine named the "plastic-eating monster". Every hour, thousands of kilograms of milk jugs, water bottles, and grocery bags are fed into the machine. The plastic waste comes from landfills across the United States. John Bordnyniuk runs the company, called JBI.
Mr Bordnyniuk has invented a new process for turning plastic into fuel. First, many different kinds of unwashed plastics are melted together.
Mr Bordnyniuk uses a special chemical to turn the liquid into a vapour. This reduces the plastic to its most basic elements.
"Plastics are just long hydrocarbon chains. What we're doing is reforming them into links and chains that we want so they have a high fuel value.” Eight per cent of the recycled plastic is used to run the system. Independ?ent testers say eighty-six per cent of what goes in comes out as fuel.
Bob Molodynia helps run the company. He watches as the plastic-eating machine pours a thin, brown liquid into an oil barrel.
JBI produces several thousand liters of fuel a day. It creates different grades of fuel for different industries. It sells the fuel for up to one hundred dollars a barrel. Each barrel costs about ten dollars to produce.
Scientists say plastic-to-oil technology is still new and developing. They say it is not yet known if the process is environmentally friendly. And some questions whether turning plastic into oil can even be considered "recycling".
Carson Maxted is with the publication Resource Recycling,a magazine that reports on the plastic recycling industry. He says because there is a lot of plastic waste and a great demand for oil,JBFs recycling technology may create great changes in both industries.

About 30 years ago,I left Cuba for the United States with my son. After getting settled finally in Brunswick,New Jersey,I enrolled (注冊(cè)) my son in kindergarten. Several weeks later,my son's teacher asked me to meet him at his office.
In the teacher's office,an exchange of greetings was followed by his ques?tions, "Is your son mentally retarded (智力發(fā)育遲緩的) ?Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?"
Was he talking about my wonderful Scola? No,no, it can't be. What a helpless, lonely moment!I told him that Scola was a quiet, sweet little boy, instead. I asked him why he was asking me all these questions.
My son could not follow the teacher's directions,he told me,and thus,Scola was disrupting the class. Didn't he know my son did not speak English yet?
He was angry, " Why hasn't your son been taught to speak English? Don't you speak English at home?"
"No,I didn't speak English at home," I replied. I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months, and I didn't want him to forget his native language. Well, wrong answer! What kind of person would not speak in Eng-lish to her son at home and at all time? "Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country, never wanting to be a part of this society?" Needless to say,I tried to tell him I was not one of "those people". Then he told me the meeting was over, and I left.
As I had expected,my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over. He went on to graduate from college and got a job, earning close to six figures. He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted,contented life. And he has benefited from being bilingual (雙語(yǔ)的) . Speaking more than one language allows people to communicate with others;it teaches people about other cultures and other places—something very basic and obviously lacking in the "educator" I met in New Jersey.

Green is an important colour in nature. It is the colour of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the colour of most growing plants.
Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes,it describes something that is not yet ripe or finished.
For example,a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the fifteenth century,a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns had not yet developed. A century or so later,a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any expe?rience in battle. By the eighteenth century,a green?horn had the meaning it has today―a person who is new in a job.
Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early 1900s.
A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died.
The Green Revolution is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of hard work by agricultural scientists who had green thumbs.
Green is also the colour used to describe the pow?erful emotion, jealousy. The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space.
