閱讀表達(共5小題, 每小題3分, 滿分15分)
Let me tell you about five of the enemies we face from within. The first enemy that you’ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is! “Ho-hum,let it slide. I’ll just drift along.” Here’s one problem with drifting:you can’t drift your way to the top of the mountain.
The second enemy we face is indecision(優(yōu)柔寡斷). Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future.Take a sword to this enemy.
The third enemy inside is doubt.Sure, there’s room for healthy skepticism. You can’t believe everything. But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities.              , they doubt themselves.I’m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart.Doubt is all enemy.Get rid of it.
The fourth enemy within is worry. We’ve all got to worry some.Just don’t let it conquer you.Instead, let it alarm you.Worry can be useful. If you step off the curb (路邊) in New York City and a taxi is coming, you’ve got to worry. But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. Here’s what you’ve got to do with your worries:drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get you, you’ve got to get it.Whatever is pushing on you, you’ve got to push back.
The fifth enemy is overcaution. It is the timid (膽小的) approach to life.Timidity is not a virtue;it’s an illness. If you let it go,it’ll conquer you.Timid people don’t get promoted. They don’t advance and grow and become powerful in the marketplace. You’ve got to avoid overcaution.

小題1:Facing the Enemies from Within.
主旨大意題。根據(jù)文章第一段第一句Let me tell you about five of the enemies we face from within.
小題2:indifference,indecision,doubt,worry, overcaution.(其中三個)
細節(jié)題。文章五段中每一段都有一個The first enemy that you’ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference.和The second enemy we face is indecision(優(yōu)柔寡斷).和 The third enemy inside is doubt和The fourth enemy within is worry.以及The fifth enemy is overcaution.
小題3:Besides/Even worse/Worse still/Worse of all等
根據(jù)前后句But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities.和they doubt themselves.可知他們先是懷疑自身以外的事情,最后開始自我懷疑,這是一種遞進的關系。故使用.Besides/Even worse/Worse still/Worse of all。
小題4:But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small comer.
推理題。But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner這兩句都是指不要讓擔憂控制我們。

Although man has known asbestos (石棉) for many hundreds of years, it was not until 160 years ago that it was mined for the first time on the North American continent. H.W.Johns, owner of a New York City Supply Shop for roofers, was responsible for the opening of that first mine.
Mr.Johns was given a piece of asbestos which had been found in Italy. He experimented with the material and then showed its surprising powers to his customers. After putting on a pair of asbestos gloves, which looked much like ordinary work gloves, he took red-hot coals from the fireplace and played with them in his hands. How astonished the customers were to discover that he was not burned at all.You can well imagine that he had increasing business in asbestos roofing materials. However, because it was very expensive to transport them from Italy to the United States, Mr.Johns sent out a young scientist to seek a source nearer home. This young man found great vein(巖脈), in the province of Quebec in Canada.
Ever since 1881 Quebec has led the world in the production of this unusual mineral, which is made up of magnesium, silicon, iron, and oxygen. When it is mined, the asbestos is heavy, just as you would expect a mineral to be.When it is separated, a strange thing happens: the rock breaks down into fine, soft, soapy fibres.
Scientists do not know why the rock can be separated easily into threads, but they have found thousands of uses of this fireproof material, of the so-called “cloth of stone”.

“Why should I care about the environment?” some people ask. There is a very simple reason: We live on the earth, and it is the only place we can live on right now, as we cannot live in space yet. If we treat the earth like a garbage dump, it will become dirty and unlivable. If we treat it well by being eco-conscious, the earth will stay clean and suitable for living, for ourselves and for our children.
What is “being eco-conscious”?
Being eco-conscious means being aware of your actions, and what you do to the environment. For example, you might think, “Using hairspray is great for fixing my hair.” However, if you are eco-conscious, you would ask, “Does this hairspray have CFCs in it? Could I be destroying the earth by using hairspray?”
How can I be eco-conscious?
You can find many simple ways to help the environment in your everyday life.
When you go shopping, bring a bag or a basket with you. Please try not to use plastic bags as much as you can.
You can go to work by bike or on foot if it is not far from your home.
You can put your rubbish into different bags, which makes it convenient for recycling.
You can eat less chewing gum.
You can use your own chopsticks instead of the disposable ones in your company or in restaurants.
You can put batteries in a special box instead of in garbage bins.
You can use the water which has been used for washing vegetables or fruits to clean the floor and the toilet or to water your garden.
You can turn off the decorative lights in your room when watching TV.
You can turn down your air conditioner by one degree, as this will cause a 10% reduction in energy use.
You can use recycled paper. Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil. You can also use recycled glass instead of glass made from raw materials. This will reduce the related air pollution by 20%, and the related water pollution by 50%.
Please believe that. If you do a little, it will make a big difference.

D.turn his air conditioner to a higher degree
小題3:If you want to help the environment, you should do all the following EXCEPT ________.
A.share a car with your colleagues
B.use paper bags instead of plastic bags
C.use hairspray containing CFCs
D.use recycled glass instead of glass made from raw materials
小題4:It can be inferred from the passage that _________.
A.it’s very hard for human beings to keep the earth clean and comfortable
B.protecting the environment is the duty of everybody
C.we should protect the environment together, as it’s no use doing it individually
D.it’s very easy to be eco-conscious
小題5:According to the author, which of the following statements is WRONG?
A.Being eco-conscious means you should know much about the environment.
B.The more we care, the better the environment will be.
C.If each of us just does a little, we can’t make any difference.
D.If we treat the earth badly, we’ll make a lot of trouble for ourselves.

She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brown haired, freckle-faced image of innocence. Outside, it was pouring so heavily.
We all stood there just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others annoyed because nature messed up their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world.
Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance (昏昏欲睡) we were all caught in. “Mom, let’s run through the rain,” she said.
“ No, honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit.” Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated, “Mom, let’s run through the rain. ”
“We’ll get soaked if we do,” Mom said.
“ No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this morning,”  the young girl said as she tore at her Mom’s arm.
“This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?”
“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!”
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I dare say you couldn’t hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.
Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child’s lifetime when innocent trust can be developed so that it will bloom into faith. “Honey , you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the rain. If get wet, well maybe we just need washing.” Mom said. Then off they ran.
We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they rushed past the cars and they held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, l did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.
You may lose your material possessions, your money and even your health, but no one can ever take away your precious memories. So don’t forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories.

Did you ever look up at the moon and think you saw a man’s face there? When the moon is round and full, the shadows(影子) of the moon mountains and the lines of the moon valleys sometimes seem to show a giant nose and mouth and eyes. At least, some people think so.
If there were a man on the moon—instead of mountains and valleys that just look like the face of a man—what would he be like?
He would not be like anyone you know. He would not be like anyone anybody knows.
If the man on the moon were bothered by too much heat or cold the way Earth people are, he could not stay on the moon.
The moon becomes very, very hot. It becomes as hot as boiling water. And the moon becomes very, very cold. It becomes colder than ice.
Whatever part of the moon the sun shines on is hot and bright. The rest of the moon is cold and dark.
If the man on the moon had to breathe to stay alive, he couldn’t live on the moon because there’s no air there. He’d have to carry an oxygen tank, as astronauts do. There’s no food on the moon, either. Nothing grows—not even weeds(grass).
If the man on the moon liked to climb mountains, he would be very happy. There are many high places there, such as the raised land around the holes, or craters(火山口), of the moon. Some of these rims are as tall as Earth’s highest mountains.
But if the man on the moon liked to swim, he would be unhappy. There is no water on the moon—just dust and rock.
When you think of what it’s like on the moon, you may wonder why it interests our scientists. One reason is that the moon is Earth’s nearest neighbor—it is the easiest place in space to get to.
Going back and forth between the moon and Earth, astronauts will get a lot of practice in space travel. Things learned on moon trips will be of great help to astronauts who later take long, long trips to some of the planets.
Scientists are also interested in the moon because it has no air. The air that surrounds Earth cuts down the view of the scientists who look at the stars through telescopes. A telescope on the moon would give them a clearer, closer view of the stars.(words: 411)
小題1:What is the reason why our scientists are interested in the moon.?
A.The moon is beautiful.
B.The moon is different from the earth.
C.The moon is Earth’s nearest neighbor—it is the easiest place in space to get to.
D.The moon is the easiest place in space to get to and it has no air, unlike Earth.
小題2:The underlined word “rim” in the Paragraph 8 means _________ .
A.ballB.hillC.round edgeD.height
小題3:What is the main thought of the passage?
A.We can learn much from research on the Moon.
B.There may be human beings on the moon.
C.If there were a man on the Moon, there would be many similarities between the man on the Moon and on the Earth.
D.A telescope on the Moon would help scientists have a clearer, closer sight of the stars.

When we say older people shrink, we don’t mean they become tiny enough to fit in your pocket! We just mean that it’s common for older people to become a little shorter over time. This kind of shrinking can’t be reversed, although people can slow or stop this process. But why does shrinking happen at all?
Because of gravity (that force that keeps your feet on the ground) , cushions between the bones in the spine (脊骨), get compressed (壓縮), which makes a person lose a little height and become shorter.
Another reason why some older people shrink is because of osteoporosis (骨質疏松). Osteoporosis occurs when bone is broken down and not enough new bone material is made. Over time, bone is said to be lost because it’s not being replaced. Bones become smaller and weaker and can easily break if someone with osteoporosis is injured.
Older people — especially women, who generally have smaller and lighter bones to begin with — are more likely to develop osteoporosis. As years go by, a person with osteoporosis can get small breaks in bones that are called compression fractures. These breaks cause collapse of the spine and over time the person with osteoporosis can become hunched over (駝背).
Did you know that every day you shrink a little, too? You aren’t as tall at the end of the day as you are at the beginning. That’s because as the day goes on, water in the disks of the spine gets compressed due to gravity, making you just a tiny bit shorter. Don’t worry, though. Once you get a good night’s rest, your body recovers, and the next morning, you’re standing tall again!
Smoking and drinking alcohol can make this problem worse. Want to do something right now to build strong bones? I believe what I say will help you.
小題1:Which of the following statements is true?
A.For shrinking, people can do nothing about it.
B.If someone is injured, he will become shorter.
C.Women have smaller and lighter bones than men.
D.We aren’t as tall at the end of the day as we are at the beginning.
小題2:What should we do if we don’t want to shrink faster?
A.We should try to reduce gravity.
B.We should be careful not to be hurt by others.
C.We should sleep as long as possible.
D.We should keep away from smoking and drinking alcohol.
小題3:What is the topic of the passage?
A.How can we stop shrinking?
B.Why do we shrink?
C.Some tips on how to keep tall.
D.How to live a healthy life.
小題4:About osteoporosis we know that _______.
A.gravity is one of the causes of osteoporosis
B.once our bone is broken down, osteoporosis will occur
C.women are more likely to develop osteoporosis
D.if we develop osteoporosis, we are more likely to be shorter
小題5:What will the author talk about in the paragraph to be followed?
A.Tell us how to grow taller.
B.Tell us how to become healthier.
C.Tell us how to avoid being shrinking.
D.Tell us what to do to have strong bones.

Imagine that you are sitting in a park and suddenly remember that you need to send an urgent email. You have your laptop computer with you and you connect it to a wireless access point and access the Internet. Then you send your email. This wouldn’t have been possible if there were no wireless Internet for laptops. Wireless Internet has come into our life in so many ways that we don’t even realize what a necessary part it has become of our day-to-day lives.
How do we connect to a wireless Internet service for laptop computers? There are two ways to do this. They are Wi-Fi connection and Bluetooth connection. Wireless networking is very easy. You just switch on the Wi-Fi button that has been provided in the laptop for Wi-Fi scanning. Once that is done, the computer will connect to the Internet.
An interesting fact about Wi-Fi networking is that you can create a network between similar wireless equipment. Consider a situation where you and your friend both have Wi-Fi laptops, and there is some data you want to exchange. Traditional networking architecture demands that you have a wireless router (路由器). But the beauty of Wi-Fi networking technology is that you can set up a network between you and your friend’s laptop, and share all the data you want.
Broadband (寬帶) Internet connection is typically preferred by any user as it provides better speed for Internet surfing. Up until the invention of 3G mobile phones, Internet speed on mobile phones was very slow. 3G has the promise of changing the entire face of broadband technology. Just imagine browsing at speeds of more that 2MB per second. To give you a measure of the speed, 3G enables you to watch high quality live videos on the Internet.
It is amazing to see how technology changes and the rate at which it changes. There may come a time when you may be able to browse using mobile wireless Internet for laptops anywhere in the world.
小題1:What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

A long time ago, before human beings lived on the earth, little coral polyps(水螅)settled around tropical (熱帶的)coastlines and constructed corals. Over a long period they created lots of reefs. Yet, pollution, climate change and commercial fisheries are limiting the chance of future generations knowing or seeing many of the reefs and sea creatures that exist. Hence, take action to dive now and you can explore the underwater world.
Commercial underwater diving began in ancient Greece. Diving in general means that the whole body is completely in water. On that account there are lots of exciting and quite adventurous ways to dive, like shark cage diving, scuba diving(戴水肺潛水)and reef diving.
There are great coral reefs all over the world, but usually they are situated in warm, clear water such as the Pacific and the Indian Ocean, where they grow best. This is why there are no coral reefs on the west coast of South Africa. However, South Africa’s east coast offers much brightly coloured sea life.
In South Africa more than 100,000 dives a year are made just in coral reefs, which are one of the natural wonders of the world. To see the whole beauty of the reef the right diving gear(設備) is an essential requirement. This means a perfect fitting diving mask and fins, as well as a snorkel(呼吸管)and a friend. Diving alone is dangerous because there may be strong currents you are not aware of, and it’s a lot more fun to share the experience with someone. However, before you can explore the deeper sea, a certificated and checked scuba, a wetsuit and of course a license will be needed. Whether you choose the snorkel or the scuba to spot the colourful underwater world, try to touch as little as possible, be careful with the corals and don’t strike the fishes, because the complex ecosystem is very sensitive.
小題1:The following factors probably affect coral reefs EXCEPT ________.
A.sea creaturesB.pollutionC.fishingD.climate change
小題2:Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Human beings appeared before corals were created.
B.One needs a license to dive into the deeper sea.

小題3:There are no coral reefs on the west coast of South Africa probably because of a lack of ________.
A.large waters and soft sand
B.warm currents and delicious food
C.friendly creatures and flat seabed
D.clear water and suitable temperature
小題4:The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A.diving alone under the sea is rather dangerous
B.some matters we need pay attention to when diving
C.South Africa is a popular place for diving
D.what we should wear when diving
