Five Ways to Rock the Rest of the Semester
With exams around the corner, how can you possibly pack in one more English word, let alone the causes of the Cold War? Don’t worry. Here is our handy guide to help you
Power Down
So you stayed up too late last night reading Mockingjay for the fifth time. Oops! When you’re that fired, your schoolwork suffers. Instead of studying inefficiently while you are sleepy, allow yourself a 15-minute afterschool power nap. Studies show that even a few minutes of shut-eye can improve memory and concentration.
Take Notes
Not quite grasping that super complicated concept in your chemistry class? You may need to change the way you take notes. Instead of recording every word your teacher says, try using visual hints like pictures, symbols and word bubbles. You can even switch computer fonts or pen color for the important stuff.
Dream On
Your bed’s not just for zzz’s. Experts say it may be good to study in bed, too. Why? We’re able to absorb more right before bed because we’re less distracted and the new information stays in our minds as we sleep. So, slide into bed with a textbook or notes, read for 15 minutes, and then turn off the lights for some sweet and smart dreams.
Brain Food
You’re in the middle of a biology exam when your mind goes blank. You knew this stuff cold at home, but now you can’t tell a ribosome from a chloroplast. What’s going on? Your brain’s in need of some refueling. Have some snacks like apple slices or cheese before class, and have plenty of water, too. If your teacher doesn’t mind, pop in a piece of gum during an exam. Some scientists think the chewing increases the flow of oxygen to the brain.
Smart Move
Ugh! You’re taking an English test and you cannot remember the past participle of “understand”. What to do? Skip it. Test taking is all about timing, so don’t waste it on tricky questions. Move ahead and answer everything you know before returning to the ones you don’t. Chances are, once you get back to the toughies, you’ll recall the answer or at the very least, you’ll have a little more time to come up with one that works.
小題1:When taking notes, we can do all these except ______.
A.draw picturesB.change the typefaceC.switch on the computerD.colour the key points
小題2:According to the passage, _____.

As people in Beijing and northern China struggle with severe air pollution this winter, the toxic(有毒的)air is also making life hard for plants and even food crops of China.
"in the last 50 years there has been a 1 6-fold increase in ozone(臭氧)pollution”in the Beijing area, said Hanqin Tian of Auburn University in Alabama, who studies the effects of China's pollution and climate change on plants.
Ozone is particularly harmful to plants because it damages the pores(氣孔)  on leaves, called stomata, which plants use to regulate how much water evaporates from the leaves. That,in turn, affectS how much water a plant must take up through its roots.Changes in water uptake by plants have been documented in other parts of the world, including the United States,as having major impacts on regional groundwater and surface water supplies.
In studies of the long-term productivity of plants,Hanqin Tian and some of his colleagues show that ozone pollution, along with climate change, has been lowering plant productivity in China, which reduces the amount of carbon and other pollutants that the plants Can absorb to fight all the emissions from the burning offossil fuels.
The worst effects on plants are likely to be in areas where the growing pollution problem is just fairly new, said Arthur Chappelka, also a plant researcher at Auburn University. Some plants are more resistant to pollutants than others,he said, and the plants that are living today in long-polluted urban areas are likely to be only those that are very pollution tolerant.
Away from the cities, however, where crops are necded to feed China’s yast population, the effeets of the growing pollution on crops is a significant concern.
“In some ways it affects the crop production and food securiy of China,”said Hanqin Tian.“Air quality is really important for human health, plants and ecosystem and sustainability.”
The problem is bound to get worse as China continues to develop economically, he said, and so he and other researchers continue to urge the Chinese government to take action to reduce emissions from cars and industries.
小題1:ozone does harm to plants mainly by ________.

D.The toxic air has few effects on food supply in China.
小題3:What Can we infer from the passage?
A.Healthy foods are not available in Beijing.
B.Some kinds of plants aren’t affected by air pollution.
C.Crops in China are hard to feed its large population.
D.People should stop developing economically
小題4:According to the passage, the Chinese govemment should
A.care more about developing economy

In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about a half a dozen generate (引起,導(dǎo)致) the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.
The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances hundreds--- even thousands--- of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat that is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl in a counter-clockwise (逆時(shí)針方向) motion.
The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months.
Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12 inch downpours resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea, the mountains of water moving toward the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.
小題1:When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane?
A.When it begins in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas.
B.When it hits he coastline.
C.When it is more than 75 mils wide.
D.When its winds reach 75 miles per hour.
小題2:What is the worst thing about hurricane?
A.The destructive effects of water.
B.The heat they release.
C.That they last about nine days on the average.
D.Their strong winds.
小題3:The counter-clockwise swirling of the hurricane is brought about by           .
A.the low-pressure area in the center of the storm
B.the force of waves of water.
C.the trade winds
D.the increasing heat
小題4:Apparently the word “downpour” in the fourth paragraph means           .
A.heavy rainfall
B.dangerous waves
C.the progress of water to the hurricane center
D.the increasing heat

It’s common for parents to feel emotional when the moment comes for their child to leave home and go to university. Even parents who don’t speak about the event are likely to feel a sense of sadness because it’s the end of an era where you and your family were at the centre of your child’s world. As a parent you’ll probably continue to support your child in different ways, but the main job of raising your child is over. It’s a huge change for everyone involved.
There are a few things that you can do to make the transition easier. Plan carefully for your child’s departure and think about how you can help. Many parents take their child to university for the first time. If you decide to do that, be ready to feel a real wrench when the time comes to say goodbye. Your child will probably be as nervous as you are about the moment when you finally say goodbye – but that might not show!
Be positive and cheerful about the choice your child has made to continue studying, and plan to leave once you’ve unpacked the car and looked around your child’s new living accommodations. If you can, save your tears for the car – you’ll make things easier on your child and yourself.
The more you’ve invested in being a parent, the more you’ll feel a sense of loss, so the sadness you feel now is a sign that you’ve been a good mom or dad. Remind yourself that parenting is all about raising an independent and confident child who functions well without you. If your child quickly settles and starts enjoying himself, you should congratulate yourself.
It’s also only fair to allow yourself some time to grieve. Don’t expect to pick yourself up and move on straight away. But you may decide to find a hobby or sport to fill your extra time. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn a new language, go to yoga classes or take up swimming. You may decide to spend more time with family and close friends, who are likely to be feeling the absence of your child as well.
Agree on the best approach to staying in touch before your child leaves, and stick to your agreement. Try not to panic if your child doesn’t respond immediately – remember, they’re starting a new and busy life.
小題1:The underlined word “wrench” in Paragraph 2 means a feeling of ________.
A.sorrowB.regret C.a(chǎn)ngerD.love
小題2:What does good parenting consist of?
A.Supporting your child in different ways all the time.
B.Congratulating yourself when your child goes to college.
C.Preparing your child to stand on their own feet in the future.

小題3:What’s NOT advised as the way to recover from your child’s departure?
A.Developing a new hobby or sport
B.Learning a new language.
C.Spending more time with close friends
D.Staying in touch with your child.
小題4:What would be an appropriate title for the whole passage?
A.Staying in Touch with Your Child
B.Preparing to Say Goodbye to Your Child
C.Dealing with Your Child Leaving Home for University
D.Life after Your Child Has Left Home for University

Black Box
You never see them, but they're with you every time you fly. They record where you're going, how fast you're traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to resist almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic (漫畫)  book. They're known as the black box.
When planes fall from the sky, as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean on June 30, 2009, the black box is the best method for identifying what went wrong. So when a French submarine(潛水艇)  discovered its homing signal five days later, it marked a huge step toward determining the cause of the disaster in which 152 passengers were killed.
In 1958. Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction. That was the first model for a black box, which became a requirement on all US commercial flights by 1960. Early models often failed to resist crashes, however, so in 1965 it was completely redesigned. That same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black, be painted orange or yellow to be easier to see.
Modem airplanes have two black boxes: a voice recorder, which tracks pilots' conversations, and a flight-data recorder, which monitors fuel levels, engine noises and other operating functions that help experts reconstruct the aircraft's final moments. The boxes can resist powerful force and temperatures up t0 2,OOOoF. They're also able to send out signals from depths of 20,000 ft. Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447 ,  which crashed near Brazil on June 1 , 2009 ,  are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say they're still likely to turn up. In the approximately 20 deep-sea crashes over the past 30 years, only one plane's black boxes were never recovered.
小題1:What can we leam about the black box from the passage?
A.It helps an airplane function normally.

小題3:The Federal Aviation Authority required the black boxes be painted orange or yellow to
A.make them easily identified
B.meet the international standards
C.caution people to handle them with care
D.distinguish them from the color of the plane
小題4:What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?
A.They have stopped sending homing signals.
B.They were destroyed somewhere near Brazil.
C.There is an urgent need for them to be restructured.
D.There is still a good chance of their being recovered.

What makes a person a scientist?Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It isn’t the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools which make him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter(木匠).You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate(調(diào)查),how to discover information,is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further;he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer he gets to many questions is into a large set of ideas about how the world works.?
The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There’s no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration(實(shí)證)must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason why investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy(正確性)of his mathematics was later tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas were proved to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations(計(jì)算)that may test his investigations.
小題1:What makes a scientist according to the passage?
A.The tools he uses.B.His ways of learning.
C.The way he uses his tools.D.The various tools he uses.
小題2:“...knowing how to investigate, how to discover information,is important to everyone.” The writer says this to show_______.
A.the importance of information
B.the difference between scientists and ordinary people
C.the importance of thinking
D.the difference between carpenters and ordinary people
小題3: A sound(合理的) scientific theory should be one that_______.
A.works under one set of conditions at one time and also works under the same conditions at other times
B.doesn’t allow any change even under different conditions
C.leave no room for improvement.
D.can be used for many purposes
小題4:What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Scientists are different from ordinary people.
B.The Theory of Relativity?.
C.Exactness is the core(核心)of science.
D.Exactness and way of using tools are the keys to making of a scientist.

What will people die of 100 years from now? If you think that is not a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in biotechnology(生物技術(shù)). With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today's leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories.
In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond 120 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs. The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on-in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.
It is exciting to imaging that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future.
小題1:According to the passage, human death is now mainly caused by____
A.diseases and agingB.a(chǎn)ccidents and war
C.a(chǎn)ccidents and agingD.heart disease and war
小題2:Humans may live longer in the future because ____
A.heart disease will be far away from us
B.human brains can decide the final death
C.the basic materials of cells will last forever
D.human organs can be repaired by new medicine
小題3:We can learn from the passage that ____
A.human life will not last more than 120 years in the future
B.humans have to take medicine to build new skin cells now
C.much needs to be done before humans can have a longer life
D.we have already solved the technical problems in building new cells

Scientists know of more than 1,000 volcanoes on the surface of Venus, Earth’s “sister” planet. A big question has been: Are they still active? The scientists say yes.
Their evidence for recent volcanic activity on Venus comes from a lava(熔巖) flow in the planet’s northern hemisphere. The flow is hotter than the rocks around, which means the lava might still be cooling off. “The flow we studied seems to be very young---it is still warm inside,” Nataliya Bondarenko said.
Venus is a difficult planet to study from Earth because it is surrounded by thick clouds. Telescopes on Earth can’t see through these clouds, so the best information about Venus comes from spacecraft orbiting it.
Bondarenko and her colleagues studied the lava flow using data from NASA’s Magellan mission. That spacecraft spent four years in orbit around Venus and used radar to make a map of 98 percent of the planet’s surface. On October 11th, 1994, the mission ended, and the spacecraft plunged (跌落) through Venus’ heavy cloud cover and crashed onto the planet below.
While in orbit, the Magellan craft sent microwaves, which can go through Venus’ clouds, to the surface. Microwaves are invisible and can be as long as three feet. These waves are a kind of energy, like light. And like light, they bounce off surfaces. The way the waves bounced off the Venus’ surface and back to the craft supplied information that the scientists used to estimate the temperature of various parts of the planet’s surface. Bondarenko’s team found that the lava flow was hotter than its surroundings---which may mean the lava flow is in the process of cooling.
The scientists say the lava flow can’t be very old because if it were, it would have cooled off enough that Magellan wouldn’t have noticed the difference in microwaves. She adds that the flow appears in a 1978 view of the surface that a craft called the Pioneer Venus Orbiter captured.
小題1:What happened to Magellan in the end?
A.It was floating in space forever.
B.It flew into heavy clouds.
C.It returned to the Earth.
D.It fell onto Venus.
小題2:How could Bondarenko judge the temperature of the Venus?
A.By looking at it with a powerful telescope.
B.By measuring the thickness of clouds over Venus.
C.By calculating the microwave bouncing off Venus’s surface.
D.By orbiting Venus for 4 years in a spacecraft.
小題3:The best title for the passage may be “______ ”.
A.Warm lava on Venus
B.More volcanic eruptions on Venus
C.Venus is just like a big active volcano
D.Lava flows are first found on Venus

While learning the science lessons, I used to get a doubt--why ear, nose, tongue and eyes should be called as special senses? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings. Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connectivity. Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat a heavy food. Isn’t it good for a sound nap after a stomach-full meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a meal, but the hearing pitch(強(qiáng)度)does change after a heavy meal.
We usually give credit of the taste to our tongue, but do you know that unless saliva(唾液)dissolves something, our tongue cannot recognize the taste of the food eaten. Taste is nothing but the food chemicals dissolved in the saliva being sensed by the taste buds(味蕾)present on the tongue. Try to dry off your tongue and mouth with a tissue paper and then taste something.
Women are much better smellers than men. They are born with this characteristic ability and can correctly recognize the exact fragrance of the sample. We all can store almost 50,000 different smells, which are strongly tied to the memories.
Pupils(瞳孔)do not respond to light alone, but to the slightest bit of noise around too. Thus surgeons, watchmakers and those professionals who have to perform a much delicate job do prefer to have a sound-free environment. Even a small noise can enlarge their pupils, change the focus and make their vision less clear.
Each and every one of us has a particular or individualistic or characteristic smell, which is unique to us, except the twins. This smell is very subtle yet can be sensed even by a newborn. It may be due to this smell that the newborn recognizes the presence of his parents around.
小題1:What may happen after you have had a rich lunch?
A.Your eyes become weak and can not see well.
B.You may feel energetic and fresh.
C.Your hearing pitch may be decreased.
D.Your tongue may lose the function of taste.
小題2:. What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in paragraph 2?
A.Our tongues can’t be dried while eating something.
B.If your tongue is dried without any saliva on it, it will not work.
C.A tissue paper is the only thing that can be used to dry our tongues.
D.If your tongue is dried with a tissue paper, it may work as well as before.
小題3:What makes each person different from anyone else except twins according to the passage?
A.The number of sensory organs.
B.The functions of sensory organs.
C.The particular smell of a person.
D.The style of one’s behavior.
小題4:Which of the following may be the best title of this passage?
A.The Sensitivity of Sensory Organs
B.The Functions and Connections of Sensory Organs
C.A Newborn’s Sensory Organs
D.Different Senses Between Men and Woman
