But it is not easy to find work,“ 5 you speak the language of the country well, there will be very few openings,”says Anthea Ellis, an adviser on 6 for students.“If you work with a family in Italy, you’ll have to speak Italian. When you wash dishes in a restaurant in Paris, the owner will expect you to speak 7 .British students only have a language 8 for jobs in the USA and Australia.”

The two teachers with the children had never been 10 .One child lost his passport; another became seriously ill and was 11 home; the whole group was thrown out of one hotel because of the 12 they made, and Sarah herself was robbed on her only 13 evening of the entire trip.“I did visit a lot of new places,” she says,“but it wasn’t worth it. The pay was 14 and it really was a 24 hour-a-day job. The kids never slept!”
“The trouble is, students expect to have 15 time of it.”Anthea Ellis points out.“ 16 ,they see it as a holiday. In practice, 17 ,you have to work hard. At the same time, all vacation work is casual(臨時(shí))work. You’ll have a job when the hotel, the restaurant, or the campsite is busy. 18 ,you’ll work if it’s convenient for the company that employs you. But you have 19 employment rights. Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening.
One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own.
Then, in the country one can rest from the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has the reward of one who has shared the secret of Nature.
Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional(偶爾) walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.

Our particular parenting style reflects our own way of “l(fā)ooking”. Here’s a great piece of writing reflecting parent’s particular ways on the parenting style that have become known humorously as helicopter parenting and submarine parenting.
Helicopter parents hover over their children, managing every aspect of their child’s life. On the contrary, submarine parents remain “hidden” coming to the surface when guidance is needed.
While helicopter parents may have the best intentions, in reality, they are raising children with few problem solving skills. Children with hovering parents never get the chance to face disappointment and build up their ability to recover from misfortune.
Think about your typical submarine. Submarines usually remain underwater. In case of a need for emergency surfacing, submarines can rise so quickly. They are driven partially out of the water. Submarine parents also remain out of sight, yet able to appear in the case of an emergency.
I admit I’m a submarine mom. My job as a parent is to have fun with my daughters while letting them explore and learn natural consequences.
My older daughter found herself acting in commercials and making more than minimum wage as a teen. To give her a sense of the real world, I insisted she spend three weeks every summer, picking strawberries and earning $3.50 on a good day.
When my youngest daughter Sondra was six, she wanted a very expensive American Girl Doll. I cut the full color 18" picture out of the American Girl catalogue and had it laminated (壓膜). “Here’s your American Girl Doll.” I said “When you turn nine, I’ll buy you the 3D doll on your birthday.” Sondra played with her flat doll for months, making clothes and furniture for her. She learned creativity. I saved $88.00.
1.What is the text mainly about?
A. Various means of transportation.
B. Funny experiences of a mom.
C. Humorous stories about parents.
D. Different styles of parenting.
2.The underlined phrase “hover over” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_____”.
A. leave behind B. fly around C. watch over D. set aside
3.Which of the following can be learned about helicopter parents from the passage?
A. They give their children proper guidance.
B. They try to do everything for their children.
C. They teach their children how to face failures.
D. They help their children explore by themselves.
4.The author supports her point of view mainly by _____.
A. stating facts and offering advice
B. using figures and giving evidence
C. analyzing data and drawing conclusions
D. making comparisons and giving examples
