Climate change is bad news for the world’s coral reefs. As global temperatures increase, the world’s glaciers melt, 【1】 (cause) sea levels and ocean temperatures to rise. These conditions have led to coral bleaching(白化) events, 【2】 the coral turns white and slowly dies, unable to survive in its changing environment.
Global sea levels 【3】(expect) to rise about 1.5 feet by 2100, meaning coral reefs will be deeper underwater than they were 【4】(previous)in. The deeper the coral, the less light it receives, and the less 【5】(able) it has to make food. This has potential to change the entire ecosystems of reefs and the marine life they support.
But a new study from a team of 【6】(researcher) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) provides a ray of hope. They studied nearly 3,000 corals from 124 species at two reefs off 【7】 coast of Singapore: Pulau Hantu and Raffles Lighthouse. The water where these reefs live is 【8】(cloud), murky and thick with sediment(沉淀物).
The light reaches down about 26 feet, yet there are corals growing well 【9】 that level and below. They’ve adapted to surviving under the changing conditions. Researchers say it’s likely that these corals will survive sea-level rise, according to the findings 【10】(publish) in the journal Marine Environmental Research.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據所給情節(jié)進行續(xù)寫,使之構成一個完整的故事。
A young man had bought an old house that was in bad shape, but he and his wife believed they could restore it. They immediately went to work. Their goal was to have the old building look best for New Year’s Eve get-together.
Just two days before New Year, however, a storm swept through the area, leaving a hole in the wall of the house. There was obviously no time to repair the damage before New Year. Then, the sad couple attended a local auction(拍賣)that afternoon. One of the items put up for bids was an old gold-and-ivory-colored tablecloth. Seized by an inspiration, the young man was the highest bidder at $ 6.50. His idea was to hang the cloth to cover the ragged hole.
On the day before New Year, it was snowy. As the young man unlocked the house door, he noticed an old woman standing at the bus stop. He knew the bus wouldn’t be there within at least half an hour, so he invited her inside to keep warm.
When the woman walked in and saw the tablecloth, she rushed at it and said excitedly, “It’s mine. It is my tablecloth.” She told the surprised man its history and even showed him her name in one comer of the tablecloth. She and her husband had once lived in Vienna, Austria, and their village was hit by a deadly disease. So they decided to flee to Switzerland, but her husband told her to leave first, saying he had something urgent to deal with. A few days later, it was reported that the bus her husband took fell off the cliff(懸崖)and he was never to be found. Her husband was believed to have died. Touched by her story, the young couple asked about her address, planning to send the tablecloth to her after New Year. As the bus came, she left.
In the candlelight of New Year’s Eve, the tablecloth looked even more beautiful. As the man’s friends left the house, they thanked the man for his arrangement and mentioned how beautiful the house looked.

【題目】Summary Writing
We Girls Can Do Anything-Right , Barbie!
Barbie, the 11,5 inch fashion doll from Mattel Toys, Inc., is one of the most popular toys in history. The success and longevity, practically unheard of in the toy industry, makes Barbie one of the hottest American popular items of the twentieth century. The product’s endurance is due to its inner play value. With imagination, as well as hands, a child can use the doll in many ways; it becomes whatever she wants.
Affordability of the fashion has also been a factor in Barbie’s popularity. The Live Action dolls of 1971, dressed in rock and roll outfits, were among the first in which the appeal could be obtained only by purchasing the doll.
Early on, critics alleged that Barbie over-emphasized beauty, fashionable dress, and the acquisition of material things. In 1964 the National stated, “She is a social climber and a tedious self-lover.” Two years later a critic attacked Barbie’s obsession with fashion in Women’s Wear Daily.
The company claimed that Barbie was never intended to be a role model for girls. But like all dolls, Barbie replicates the human body and therefore human characteristics are projected onto it. Girls playing with the doll were unaware that their collections of Barbie’s dresses were of haute couture(高級時裝) in nature, but they recognized similar styles in their mother’s closets. Girls also understood low neck dress and skintight pants like Barbie herself, represented the world of grown-ups, a world they were preparing to enter.
The doll is many things to many people. Barbie’s negative aspects cannot be denied, but she can be a vehicle for growth.
