Then, still gripped(吸引注意)with the _51_ of it all, he continued, “ When I tried _52_ the glasses, it was as though they had been made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”
The people listened,_53_ for the miraculous glasses. But the director surely must have _54  their church with another, they thought. There were no glasses on their _55_ of items to be sent overseas.
But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized the Master Carpenter had used him in an extraordinary way.

Even though he has been caught, the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is still causing trouble. His arrest has thrown up as many questions as it has answers. Top of the list is what should happen to Saddam now, closely followed by calls for information from him about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction(大規(guī)模殺傷性武器). He is currently being held by American troops at a secret place. The US says he will stand trial(審判) for his cruel actions during his years in power. This is likely to take place at a court set up two weeks ago by the US-backed Iraqi Governing Council(伊拉克臨管會(huì)). The council's president Abdul Azizal-Hakim has warned Saddam could be executed(處死) if found guilty by the court. And the US supports this.“I think he ought to receive the worst punishment for what he has done to his people,”said US President George W. Bush, without directly stating that Saddam should be put to death. However, many nations, including Saddam's long time enemy Iran, believe he would receive a fairer trial in an international court. Even Britain, America's closest supporter, said it would not take part in any trial that could lead to Saddam's execution. The UN Security Council(聯(lián)合國安理會(huì)) has yet to make its position clear. But UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan did say that“the UN does not support a death penalty.”Besides waiting for a trial of Saddam, the world wants to see if the US and Britain can find the banned weapons they gave as the reason for the war in Iraq. Asked if Saddam's capture could lead to a breakthrough in the hunt for the weapons of mass destruction, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said,“there's obvious possibility there. But I think we should carry on what we're doing in Iraq”.
50.After the arrest(逮捕) of Saddam, people are most concerned with the question that _____.
A.whether there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq  B.where he is held now
C.how he will be punished   D.none of the above
51.Which of the following is not true?
A.Saddam will be punished for his cruel actions. B.An international court will be set up.
C.UN does not support a death penalty.
D.Many nations think it is not fair to have the trial in the court set up by the US-backed Iraqi Governing Council.
52.Tony Blair's words implies that _____.
A.he is not sure whether they can find the weapons  B.Britain will not take part in trial
 C. Both A and B      D. Neither A nor B

Now as a mother myself, I'm anxious about the future, but I'm optimistic at the same time. I have the same concerns that my mother had for me and my brothers when we were growing up and going out into the world. The world it's said has shrunk or become flat. We're connected in ways we never were before. So how do we deal with these new challenges? Well, the other day I was speaking about my concerns for the future. And I said that I wanted to make sure that young people would work hard because we're in competition with jobs. When I was sitting where you are now, I didn't have to worry about competition from China or India. There were no global pressures like you will face as you mark your own way. And we need to get every young person to really get a sense of commitment and to work hard. Well, then my daughter said, "Mom I do work hard and my friends work hard." And I said, "I know that. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to convey any impression that you don't work hard. I just want to set the bar high because we are in a competition for the future."
You know, in 1999 when I was thinking of running for the Senate, I did not know what to do. I was really thinking hard because I had to make a decision. And there were a lot of things to consider. Obviously, no first lady had ever sought public office before. I had obviously never run for office before.
You know, often our most fearsome competitor is ourselves. We struggle with all of the internal doubts and anxieties, fears for the future, concerns for the world. Sometimes when I look at what's happening in the world, it's hard to imagine going out and doing anything of meaning. But we can do it and not only that, we must. America needs you to grab hold of this moment. So compete to do the best you can and help make our country the best it can be. So today, after you've accepted your diploma, but before you leave this place, please thank your family for guiding you to this moment. Thank your professors for showing you a new world. Thank your friends for exploring that world and finally remember what this day feels like. Cherish it always. Go for it. The world awaits you.

D.The speaker is concerned about the future even though she is optimistic.
43.Why do you think the speaker urge the students to work harder?
A.Because the students are not really working hard at all.
B.Because they are faced with global competition on their way to their future.
C.Because only in this way can they afford to go to an expensive bar for a good drink.
D.Because their most fearsome competitors are themselves.

科目:高中英語 來源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

My grandparents were married for over half a century, and played their own special game from the time they met each other. The goal of their game was to write the word “shmily” in a surprise place for the other to find.
“Shmily” was written in the steam left on the mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. At one point, my grandmother even opened an entire roll of toilet paper to leave “shmily” on the very last sheet. Little notes with “shmily” scribbled (潦草地寫) hurriedly were found on dashboards (儀表板) and car seats, or taped to steering wheels.
It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents’ game. Skepticism (懷疑態(tài)度) had kept me from believing in true love — one that is pure and lasting. However, I never doubted my grandparents’ relationship. They had love down pat. It was more than their flirtatious (愛調(diào)戲的) little games; it was a way of life. Their relationship was based on devotion and passionate love.
Grandma and Grandpa held hands every chance they could. They stole kisses as they bumped into each other in their tiny kitchen. They finished each other’s sentences and shared the daily crossword puzzle and word jumble. My grandma whispered to me about how cute my grandpa was, how handsome and old he had grown to be. She claimed that she really knew “how to pick ‘em.”
But there came a dark cloud into my grandparents’ life: when my grandmother got breast cancer. Gradually it took over the whole of her body. One day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone.
“Shmily.” It was scrawled in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother’s funeral bouquet (花束). The family came forward and gathered around Grandma one last time. Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother’s casket (棺) and, taking a shaky breath, he began to sing to her. Through his tears and sadness, the song came, a deep and throaty lullaby (催眠曲,). Shaking with my own sorrow, I would never forget that moment.

A new study by a Penn State College of Medicine research team found that honey is a better and safer treatment for children than cough medicines.
Ian Paul, the study’s lead researcher, was motivated to test honey because treating coughs in children has recently become a sticky subject. Coughing is the body’s way of clearing irritated (受刺激的) airways to help you breathe. But too much coughing can irritate your lungs and throat even more. It can also make it tough to get the sleep your body needs to heal. Hoping to ease the suffering of their children, parents often give them cough medicines.
But there have never been any good studies showing that they work. Cough and cold medicines may also cause serious side effects. Hundreds of kids die in the hospital each year after receiving too much cough medicine by mistake. Last October, the US Food and Drug Administration suggested that parents should not give cough medicines to children under 6.
In order to search for a different solution, Paul designed a study that involved 105 kids who were sick with coughs and other cold conditions. At bedtime, the kids took buckwheat (蕎麥) honey, honey-flavored (蜂蜜味的) DM (one of the most common ingredients in cough medicines), or no treatment. Parents and kids in the no-
-treatment group knew they weren’t getting anything, but the other two groups weren’t told which treatment they were getting.
The surveys showed that kids who swallowed about 2 teaspoons of buckwheat honey before bedtime coughed less and slept better than kids in the other groups. “When parents want something for their kids to take,” Paul says, “honey seems like the best option”.
But what gives honey its healing power? Substances called antioxidants (抗氧化劑) may be part of the answer. All honey contains antioxidants that protect our cells from damage. Studies show that antioxidant levels in the body rise after someone swallows honey.
