Internet shopping is a new way of shopping. You no longer need to walk round hundreds of shops looking
for the items you need. Nowadays, you can shop for just about anything from your armchair. All you need is
a computer which is linked to the Internet.
People can shop for a variety of products on the Internet. Physical products include items such as books,
CDs, clothes and food. These types of products are the most common purchases (購入品) through the Internet. You can also buy information products such as on-line news, magazine stories, or computer software. Services
such as booking airline tickets, reserving (預(yù)定) hotels or renting cars are also available (可得到的) on the
Internet. You can also go shopping on the Internet for entertainment services and take part in online games or
e-mail "chats".
Internet shopping offers a number of benefits for the shopper. The most important advantage is convenience.
You can shop when you like as the on-line shops are open 24 hours a day, and you do not have to queue with
other shoppers at the check-out counters. Secondly, it is easy to find what you are looking for. Finally, it is
often cheaper to buy goods through the Internet, and you can tell the shop exactly what you want.
The main disadvantage of Internet shopping is that you cannot actually see the products you are buying or
check their quality. Also, many people enjoy shopping in the city and miss the opportunity to talk to friends.
Some people are worried about paying for goods using credit cards, so Internet companies are now finding
ways to make on-line payment safe.
Internet shopping is sure to become more and more popular in the years ahead. It promises to change the
way we buy all kinds of thing-from tonight's dinner to a new car.

The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was
7:30 pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.
By 9:45 pm, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless.
Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some
food was about to appear. By 11:00 pm, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads.
Jane and David left hungry and angry.
Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads
and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30-8:30 pm means drinks only, go
out to dinner afterwards: 8:00 pm or 8:30 pm means possible dinner, but 9:30 pm and any time thereafter means
no food, eat beforehand, to up late.
But this is not always that case. If asked to a students' party at 6:30 pm, it is normal for guests not to appear
before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive-looking eager-is social death. When my
mother is asked to a party for 6:30 pm, she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age
group (late thirties) fall somewhere between the two, but because we still think we're young, we're probably
closer to student-time than grownup time.
The accepted custom at present is confusing (混亂的), sometimes annoying, and it often means you may
go home, but it does lend every part that precious element (成分) of surprise.
1. The underlined words "off their heads" probably mean _____.
[     ]
A. tired
B. crazy
C. curious
D. hopeless
2. Jane and David's story is used to show that _____.
[     ]
A. party-goers usually get hungry at parties
B. party invitations can be confusing
C. people should ask for food at parties
D. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull
3. For some young people, arriving on time for a students' party will probably be considered _____.
[     ]
A. very difficult
B. particularly thoughtful
C. friendly and polite
D. socially unacceptable

Do you love holidays but hate the increase weight that follow? You are not alone.
Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the
weight that comes along with these delicious foods.
With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but
not to eat too much. You don't have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions
may be of some help to you.
*Don't miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast, have a small, low-fat snack. This may help to keep
you from getting too excited before delicious foods.
*Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables.
*A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full.
*Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough.
*Better not have high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them.
*Choose lean meat. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.
*If you have a sweet tooth, try mints (薄荷) and fruits. They don't have fat content as cream and chocolate.

designer.
Q: What are your great memories?
A: My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in the fields. For me it was like

I'm sure I'm not the only person (my age 15) who hates going to the dentist. Channel 4's late-night
documentary (紀(jì)錄片) Open wide last Tuesday was excellent for people like me. However, none of my
school friends watched it because they didn't know it was on. Why can't television companies let us know
about such important programmes in advance?
This pragrammes was important because it showed how methods for helping people with toothache
have developed over the centuries. If you think visiting the dentist today is an uncomfortable experience,
just be grateful you didn't live 200 years ago! Then, the programmes told us, the only cure for toothache
was removing the tooth. There weren't any dentists, so the person who cut your hair also pulled out your
bad teeth, and there was nothing to stop you feeling the pain.
The programme has also completely changed my attitude to looking after my teeth. My parents were
always saying to me things like, 'Don't eat too many sweets.' And, 'Brush your teeth after meals.' But I
never paid much attention. Now I've seen what damage sugar can do, especially if I don't use a toothbrush
regularly. I'm going to change my habits. Many people would benefit from a repeat of this programme.
