Health experts have long worried about the increasing rate of obesity in kids. It’s an important concern: Being weight or obese during childhood can lead to serious problems normally seen in adults, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Poor diets and a lack of exercise are usually the causes. But would you ever have imagined there might be a connection between the bacteria that lived in your guts (內(nèi)臟)when you were a baby and the chance that you would become overweight?

Scientists in Finland recently found just such a link. In a recent study, they showed that overweight kids had different species of bacteria living in their guts.

You probably think of bacteria only as germs that can make you sick. While it’s true that some bacteria can make people ill, your body actually depends on some types of bacteria to help you digest food and extract nutrients from it. These “good” bacteria live in your guts, where they process the food you eat.

Human babies get these bacterial helpers from their moms. When a baby is born, some of the bacteria in the mother move into the baby’s body. Growing babies get additional “good” bacteria from the milk their mothers produce. And it turns out the bacteria might play an important role in regulating weight just six years later.

So how could these bacteria affect weight? The researchers still haven’t tested that question, but future tests might lead to an answer.

The “l(fā)ink” in Paragraph 2 refers to the relationship between _______.

A. bacteria and the chance of being overweight

B. obesity and diabetes

C. diets and the chance of being overweight

D. bacteria and exercise

Which of the following is NOT the function of “good” bacteria?

A. Helping to digest food.

B. Helping to take nutrients from food.

C. Helping to regulate weight.

D. Making a person ill.

The purpose of writing this passage is to _______.

A. introduce the role of bacteria in children’s weight

B. analyze the influence of obesity on kids

C. give advice on how to lose weight quickly

D. explain the function of bacteria in foods

Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information for the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.

You have probably heard a lot about goal setting and time management. Usually, once the goal is set up, it requires a lot of time and effort to achieve it.

Sometimes playing goal detective makes it more fun to reach your goal. To figure out what your goals are is based on how you spend your time. It’s sort of like those psychological rofiles(心理剖析)you hear about in movies and on television, but this time you will do it by yourself. You will find out how you spend almost every minute of the day. Normally you probably don’t write down how you spend each of those minutes, but if you were a detective and watching yourself, you would be writing down everything you did and when you did it. So, writing down what you do is the first step to be your own goal detective.

Now that you know how you spend your time, the next step is to sort the time. Things like eating, sleeping, working and playing are t he most obvious, but you can come up with as many as you want. Since you are being a detective, you will want to ask lots of questions about your activities in each of these categories. Here you use basic who, what, when, where and how questions to fill in information. For example, “Who did I spend time with?” “Where did I spend the time?” are possible questions that you could ask yourself. When you have finished with the questions you ask, “Now WHY did I spend my time in that way?” The answer to this quwstion is the goal, or at least part of a set of goals that makes you spend your time in that way.

Whatever you find out about your daily activities, chances are that the exercise will be good for you. At the very least you will know what things you did in one day and why you did them.

    WILD WEATHERMAN
    Name: Sam Champion
    Hot job: TV Weatherman
    Where: WABC-TV, New York City
When you were a child, did you plan to forecast wind, rain, and snow on TV?
I wanted to be a foreign journalist.I took courses in weather science at Eastern Kentucky University, but I majored in broadcasting news.
How did you finally become a weatherman?
My first job in the early 80’s was at the local TV station in Paducah, Kentucky.I did everything from turning on the lights in the morning to writing and delivering morning news.I put together weather forecasts, and became interested in them.
Back then, how did you forecast weather?
Independent companies collected computer information that showed, for example, how a single weather system might split into snow or snow mixed with rain. The information was often opposite and the job of a weatherman was to study the information and make the best educated guess about the storm.
Has weather forecasting changed much with new technology?
Advanced computers, satellites, and Doppler radar (sound waves used to track storms) have made forecasting more exact. But we still know very little about how weather is shaped. So far, we just have theories.
Any advice for children who’d like to become weather scientists?
To me, weather is the most exciting field in the world. There are still so many more questions about weather than answers. After all, if we can’t foresee floods or hurricanes, how safe a society are we? Weather forecasting is wide open for scientists who love to solve puzzling problems. The next generation of meteorologists (weather scientists) will unlock many of Earth’s weather secrets. So get a general knowledge of Earth science, and study meteorology (weather science) in college.
    Thanks, Sam.

    Five steps to better handwriting
Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it’s time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them?   1  Here are five steps that really work!
    Get a great grasp
Try this — hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier.   2  Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index (食指) and middle fingers.
Let the lines be your guide
Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion (均衡).   3  Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.
    Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.
    Lower the pressure (壓力)
4  That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.
      5
Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.

    A.Play games
    B.Ask for more advice
C.So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”.
D.You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.
    E. Some kids press down really hard when they write.
    F. The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.
    G. The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb.
