Janice is an American engineer working in Nanjing. She and her husband George, who is teaching English at a university, have been eager to get to know Chinese people better, so they were pleased when Liu, Janice’s young co-worker, invited them to her home for dinner.
When they arrived, Liu introduced them to her husband Yang and asked them to sit down at a table containing eight plates of various cold dishes. Half an hour later she came back and sat down and the three began to eat. Yang came in from time to time, putting hot dishes on the table. Most of the food was wonderful, though neither George nor Janice could eat the fatty pork, and there was much more than they could eat. They kept wishing Yang would sit down so they could talk to him. Finally he did sit down to eat a bit, but soon it was time to go home.
Janice and George felt slightly depressed by this experience, but returned the invitation two weeks later. They decided to make a nice American meal and felt lucky to find olives, crackers(脆餅), tomato juice, and even some cheese in the shop. They put these out as appetizers(開胃品). For the main course they prepared spaghetti and a salad.
When Liu and Yang arrived and began to have dinner, they took small tastes of the appetizers and seemed surprised when both George and Janice sat down with them. They ate only a little spaghetti and didn’t finish the salad on their plates. After a while, George cleared the table and served coffee and pastries(糕點(diǎn)). Yang and Liu each put four spoons of sugar into their coffee but didn’t drink much of it and ate only a bite or two of pastry.
After they left, George and Janice were upset. “ We left their place so full but they’re going to have to eat again when they get home. What went wrong?

Easy isn’t a word the disabled use very much. Nothing is easy when you’re in a wheelchair or when you’re blind. But Karen Mitchell knows legs aren’t needed to walk the waves. “I forget about my disability, ”Mitchell says about sailing. And Janice Bartleson doesn’t need eyes to see the wind.

US Olympic gold medalist Magnus Liljedahl says sailing is one of the few sports where the disabled can leave their disability on the dock and be as good as anyone else. “The first half of my life, I was mainly concerned about myself, ” Liljedahl says. “But when we leave we can’t take anything with us, so it’s important to give back to the community. ”

Working in partnership with Miami’s non-profit Shake-a-Leg Foundation, more than 3, 000 disabled people every year are getting a chance to forget their disabilities and feel spray (浪花)in their faces.

Liljedahl believes the reward is in the journey. And for him, this journey has been a rich one. “I’ve really learned to appreciate life by seeing what they’ve got to deal with, ”he says. And he’s also become a better sailor. It’s a story you often hear from volunteers. Helping others often helps them more. It reawakens senses dulled over time because the able-bodied take those senses for granted.

At the dock, all seem to enjoy the chance to get their feet wet. “It gives me a feeling of independence and freedom, ”Manuela Hoyos says, “I feel free from my wheelchair. ”

56. Which of the following is TRUE about Shake-a-Leg Foundation?

A. It helps the disabled make money.

B. It was established by Magnus Liljedahl.

C. It offers the disabled sailing chances.

D. It helps the disabled meet with Olympic champions.

57. By doing volunteer work, Liljedahl _______ .

A. forgets his disability completely

B. wins an Olympic gold medal

C. has a better understanding of life

D. finds many people with a talent for sailing

58. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refers to _______.

A. the disabled

B. the volunteers

C. US Olympic champions

D. Magnus Liljedahl and Manuela Hoyos

59. It can be inferred from the text that _______.

A. Mitchell has a disability with her legs

B. Janice Bartleson moves around in a wheelchair

C. Liljedahl won his first Olympic gold medal in Miami

D. Manuela Hoyos is a volunteer at the dock

第三部分:閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)

When Chato's barking didn't stir Jerrica Seals, the recently adopted dog triednibbling on the teenager's leg, to get the girl out of her burning house.

No one was hurt. Fort Myers firefighters responded at about 7 a.m.

Five people lived in the Garcia home. That was neighbor Janice Hamilton's main concern when she looked out of her window Friday and saw the flames. "I just threw my pants on to run outside and make sure  they knew how many people lived there," Hamilton said. "It was scary."

"Seals called me screaming," said Leticia Vega, 36, the sister of Seal's boyfriend, Javier Garcia, 23, who owns the home. "She said the dog woke her up barking, jumped on the bed and bit her on the leg."

It is said that Garcia's brother brought Chato home several weeks ago after the animal wandered onto a Lehigh Acres construction site. Since then, Vega said, Chato had been mostly quiet-until it mattered. "He doesn't usually bark." Vega said. "He's real friendly."

According to deputy fire chief Steve Clyatt, possibly the fire started because of an inadequate extension cord used on a window air conditioner. More than half of the home was burned down. There was extensive smoke and water damage in the remainder of the structure. Estimates for repair costs were unavailable. "I'd say it's unlikely they will recover this, but I've been surprised before," Clyatt said.

61.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Janice Hamilton Helps Save Neighbors

B. Firefighters Put Out House Fire

C. Dogs Saves Teen Girl From House Fire

D. Family Needs Help Due To House Fire

62.The underlined word "they" in the third paragraph most probably refers to________.

A. other neighbors         B. Hamilton family members

C. Vega and her brother Garcia     D. the firefighters

63.By saying "I'd say it's unlikely they will recover this, but I've been surprised before." in the last paragraph, Clyatt means________.

A. it's a wonder that Seals survived the fire  B. the house was badly damaged

C. such a bad fire was seldom seen      D. Chato is a very clever dog

64.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT mentioned?

A. The person who called the firefighters.    B. The possible cause of the accident.

C. The relationship between Seals and Garcia.     D. The owner of the house.
