Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger(施瓦辛格)muscled aside an unpopular governor last week to win control of California, America's biggest and richest state. Now the former bodybuilder and actor faces the much bigger test of dealing with the state's huge debts and proving to America that he is a real politician.

Charming and famous, but with no political experience, few thought Schwarzenegger would realize his goal of becoming governor. But when he sets himself a challenge, he often succeeds.

“Every New Year's Day he'd write down some goals,” said Barbara Baker, his former girlfriend.“He achieved almost every single one of them.”

Born in a village in post-war Austria in 1947, Schwarzenegger is remembered as a silent boy who set his mind on developing his muscles.

“His only interest was in shaping his body to become Mr Universe,” said his first trainer.

He ended up winning 13 titles, including Mr Olympia and Mr World. He first came to America in 1968 and worked as a brick-layer before becoming a successful businessman. But this wasn't enough; he wanted to be a movie star too.His first few films weren't hits. However, when he took the lead role in the successful 1982 film” Conan the Barbarian”(野蠻人科南), Schwarzenegger the star was born.He went on to appear in many hit films, including “ The Terminator”(終結(jié)者).

“I knew I was a winner.I knew I was destined for great things.” He once wrote. He has often said he was born to lead, so it was natural he would be interested in politics.Although he has not run for office before, he has done much volunteer(義務(wù)的)work. In 1995 he started an after-school care foundation(基金會)now active in 15 cities. It encourages poor children to take part in educational, cultural and community programs, as well as computer and sports activities.

However, many people think this challenge will be a step too far Schwarzenegger.“I'm not sure he knows how hard it is to run a state this size,” said State Senate(參議院)leader John Burton.

閱讀理解:閱讀下列短文, 從所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中, 選出最佳答案。

Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been demonstrated (證實(shí)) that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins (維生素) to water without vitamins, even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a fragrant flavor (香味) was added to the vitamin—enriched liquid, the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were switched (轉(zhuǎn)) to the clear water. In time, however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.

In an experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria (自助食堂) with a wide selection of baby food before them. They were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns, but over a period of time they managed to select a well balanced diet (飲食).

So, in selecting food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what's best for them. Clearly, there is a kind of "body wisdom" which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced (影 響) by long-established habits. Some people eat fox, dog and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how much they eat seems to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.

(1)In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the rat's drinking water to ________.

[ ]

A. encourage rats to drink it

B. find out what kind of flavor rats prefer

C. test whether rats know which drink is with fragrant flavor

D. demonstrate that vitamins are tasteless

(2)The expression "the habit" in the first paragraph refers to drinking water which __________.

[ ]

A. has no smell B. is tasteless

C. has vitamins D. is flavored

(3)As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar (相似) because ___________.

[ ]

A. both have the wisdom to choose a balanced diet

B. both prefer flavored food and drink

C. both have the same eating patterns

D. both develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors

(4)In the experiment mentioned in the second paragraph, babies were _________.

A. given many choices of drinks

B. provided with various kinds of baby food

C. placed and fed in a cafeteria

D. trained to select a balanced diet

(5)According to the passage, adults' (成年人) eating habits differ from those of babies because ____________.

[ ]

A. adults know better than babies what kinds of food are good for their health

B. adults usually cannot resist the temptation of various delicious foods

C. adults' eating habits are closely related to the social and cultural customs

D. adults have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns

Vitamin D helps bones and muscles(肌肉)grow strong and healthy.Osteoporosis is a common problem as people get older.Low levels of vitamin D can lead to some problems which are mainly found in children. Also, more and more research is suggesting that vitamin D might help prevent many diseases.

The easiest way to get vitamin D is from sunlight. But many people worry about getting skin cancer and skin damage from the sun.Darker skinned people produce less vitamin D than lighter skinned people.Production also decreases(減少)as people age, and people living in northern areas have lower levels of vitamin D than people in southern areas as they get less sunlight.

Not many foods naturally contain vitamin D.Foods high in this vitamin include oily fish, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, and fish liver oils.Small amounts of vitamin D are found in beef liver, cheese and egg yolks. But most of the vitamin D in the American diet comes from foods, in which it has been added, like milk.

Research in the last several years has shown that low levels of vitamin D may increase the risk of heart attacks in men and deaths from some cancers.

More doctors are now having their patients tested for their vitamin D levels. But as research continues, some experts worry that if people take too much vitamin D, it might act as a poison. Also, skin doctors warn people to be careful not to stay in the sun too long because of the risk of skin cancer.

B.

too much vitamin D may harm people's health

C.

some people may refuse to have vitamin D level tests

D.

Honesty is the best policy, as the English saying goes.Unfortunately, honesty often leaves us when no one is watching, British psychologists reported last week.

Researchers at UK's Newcastle University set up an experiment in their psychology department's coffee room.

They set a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk on the counter and hung up a sign listing the price for drinks.People helping themselves to a cup of tea were supposed to put a few cents in the box nearby.

The scientists hung a poster above the money box, and changed each week between pictures of gazing(注視的)eyes and pictures of flowers. The researchers found that staff paid 2.76 times more for their drinks when the image of the eyes was hung.

“We were shocked by the size of the effect,” said Gilbert Roberts, one of the researchers.

Eyes are known to be a powerful perceptual(知覺的)signal for humans, scientists say.

“Even though the eyes were not real, they still seemed to make people behave more honestly,” said Melissa Bateson, a behavioral biologist and leader of the study.

Researchers believe the effect throws light on our evolutionary(進(jìn)化的)past. It may arise from behavioral characteristics that developed when early humans formed social groups to increase their chances of survival. For social groups to work, individuals had to co-operate, rather than act selfishly.“There's an argument that if nobody is watching us, it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when we're being watched we should behave better. So people see us as co-operative and behave the same way towards us,” Bateson said.

The new finding indicates that people have a striking response to eyes. That might be because eyes and faces send a strong biological signal we have evolved to respond to, Bateson said.

The finding could be put to practical use.For example, images of eyes could ensure ticket sales on public transport and improve surveillance(監(jiān)視)systems to deter antisocial(反社會)behaviour.

(1)

The story is written mainly to _________.

[ ]

A.

warn you to behave honestly whether you are alone or not

B.

explain the root of cheating in exams with no teachers present

C.

describe how the experiment in Newcastle University worked

D.

(2)

The experiment carried out in Newcastle University made researchers think that _________.

[ ]

A.

honesty is not the best policy

B.

evolution has a big influence on our behavior

C.

humans have to form social groups to survive

D.

people are more relaxed when not being watched

(3)

From the text, we know that _________.

[ ]

A.

no one acts selfishly when being watched

B.

the function of eyes is not only biological but social

C.

the image of eyes worked as well as the picture of flowers

D.

a waiter was there serving people drinks in the experiment

Is war unavoidable? Can war be prevented?

History tells that there were wars, great or small, in every century, in every decade.Throughout the ages, from the Stone age to the Atomic Age, men have been fighting, first with swords and shields(盾), then with guns and cannons, and now, hydrogen bombs and missiles are used for military purpose. But, in spite of all these, it is still my belief that war can be prevented and peace can be won, but it requires the effort of every one of us.

I am sure that we would not like to experience another world war.If it ever happens, two-thirds of the world and much of the civilization which men have gained through time, patience and effort will be destroyed. Will then the remaining one-third of the world be able to survive on its own?

Our task now is not to blame the past, but to plan for the future.

If there is peace in the world, men can use their rockets to explore the mystery of space, their submarines to explore the depth of the sea, their missiles to deliver mails and their fine equipment to penetrate(穿透)the jungles of Africa, instead of using them military.

Governments can use their money to build more schools, so that more children can be educated to be useful citizens.Scientists can use atomic energy to propel(推動)steamships and planes. They can also design new machines to increase the production of goods and thus improve the way of living of the people.

How can a peaceful world be achieved? It requires, in my opinion, the understanding and friendship between all people from all nations.Let no one suffer discrimination by reason of color, race, religion, or national origin.Let the rich support the poor and the strong help the weak.

We know that neither peace nor such a dream world can come true in a day or a month. It may even take decades or centuries. But let us plan and begin now.
