According to some talk, the younger generation in Smithville is the most antisocial in history. This seems far from the truth. Young people today as a whole are better, more informed, more ambitious, healthier, and more smart than ever before. Why then, it may be asked, do we see such restlessness and such antisocial behavior among our young people?
For the answer the citizens of this community must look at themselves. What have they done to the grounds that have been built in the last fifteen years? How many swimming pools are there? How many vocational training projects have been started? How many community – organized youth parties and picnics have been held?
The average citizen will answer that the responsibility for these activities belongs to the schools. But the schools cannot be held responsible for all the free – time activities of all the young people of this community. The job of the schools is formal education, not free – time recreation(娛樂).
This community needs a youth center suitable for such activities as picnics, camping, sports, music, art and so on. There should be social and recreational activities to meet the needs and interests of every member of our school age youth.
Mayor Elmo D. Greely has proposed the formation of a Youth Club as the first step in the direction of a Youth Center. Mayor Greely has called a meeting at the City Hall on Friday, August 15, at noon.
Giving up a lunch hour is a very little sacrifice for a project that can be of great importance to this community.
This newspaper urges every adult and young person of Smithville to attend this important meeting. We believe our industrial, business, and professional leaders have an especially strong duty to be present.
This newspaper will be present and intends to support this project with vigor.

Antarctica is the southernmost place on Earth, and it is larger than the United Sates and 95% of it is covered with ice. The ice is 5 kilometers thick at places and it never melts. At least that is what we thought, but let us keep it that way for now.
The ice seems to be alive as it works its way towards the seA. It forms an ice shelf over the water. The edge breaks away from the shelf and falls into the seA. From here it drifts. Now big pieces of ice become icebergs that can be 160 km long. They now drift north until they finally melt and become part of the ocean. This process is part of a bigger process which in turn forms a cooling system for Earth. This is so important that no country is allowed to control this areA. The treaty (agreement) signed by 12 countries at first and later joined by more, was to prevent any country harming the planet with irresponsible behavior.
The treaty basically states that:
Antarctica can be used for peaceful purposes only.
No country may build a military base there.
No country may do a nuclear test there.
No country may dump nuclear waste there.
Scientists working there will share their information.
Some other rules are there to protect the penguins and seals.
No dogs may run loose.
No planes may land near large groups of animals.
No guns, explosives, or tractors may be used near the animals.
Most important is that every member can inspect any of the other bases if he suspects that the treaty rules are being broken.
While the treaty is not foolproof(萬(wàn)無(wú)一失的), it does play a very important part in the protection of AntarcticA. The more people realize the effects that pollution has on this continent, the bigger the pressure will be on Governments to change the way they look at pollution.
69.Why was it important to sign a treaty for Antarctica?
A.Because the ice on Antarctica will finally melt into the ocean.
B.Because Antarctica is covered with 5 kilometers thick ice.
C.Because Antarctica balances the temperature of Earth.
D.Because there are many big icebergs in AntarcticA.
70.What is the process of the movement of ice in Antarctica?
A.Ice shelf---sea water---iceberg---ice.
B.Sea water---ice---iceberg---ice shelf.
C.Iceberg---ice shelf---ice---sea water.
D.Ice---ice shelf---iceberg---sea water.
71.What is included in the Antarctica treaty?
A.There is no secret research information in AntarcticA.
B.Dogs are not allowed to be raised in AntarcticA.
C.Waste can’t be thrown away in AntarcticA.
D.People can’t bring their guns to AntarcticA.

Anchors(新聞節(jié)目主持人)on China Central Television(CCTV) will need to do some fast talking to replace the popular English acronyms(首字母縮略詞)they are now banned from using. Shanghai Daily reports that “anchors at China Central Television have been banned from saying the English acronyms NBA, CBA, GDP, and the like in their programs.”
The replacement for those handy acronyms? Chinese presenters must use the full Chinese name, standardized by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.
Although CCTV(oops, we mean China Central Television) presenters must already have a score of at least 94 in their government-rated oral mandarin proficiency(普通話水平)exam, saying the full name of organizations like the CBA and WTO---10 and 6 characters’ long respectively---is sure to challenge even the most skillful anchors. CCTV sports anchor Sun Zhengping tells Shanghai Daily, “A full Chinese explanation of the English initials must be followed if my tongue slips. It is a little troublesome but a necessary one because not every member of the audience can understand the initials.”
Although the government isn’t giving any official explanation for the shift, it is believed to have something to do with a proposal by Huang Youyi, director of the China International Publishing Group, at March’s NPC meeting. In his speech, Huang said, “With more and more publications mixing Chinese with English, measures and regulations should be adopted to avoid English invading Chinese. If we don’t pay attention and don’t take measures to stop the expansion of mixing Chinese with English, Chinese won’t be a pure language in a couple of years.”
Although China is far from the first country to take measures to protect local languages, acronyms are more about saving time than they are about corrupting(破壞)a language, we would think. Good luck to the CCTV anchors.
1.CCTV anchors have to “do some fast talking” because they can no longer ____________________.
A. speak as slowly as they like
B. mix English into Chinese
C. use shortened Chinese expressions
D. have much time for their programs
2.According to the writer, “CBA” is supposed to be replaced with “________________”by CCTV anchors.
3.What’s Huang Youyi’s purpose?
E. Using full English names instead of short forms.
F. Translating Chinese terms into proper English.
G. Avoiding Chinese words being mixed into English.
H. Keeping our mother tongue a pure language.
4.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
I. China has fallen behind in the matter of protection of its language.
J. The ban is not necessary.
K. Chinese shouldn’t be corrupted.
CCTV anchors will have a hard time.
