When her mom read the note, she cried and hugged Sandy   49 but said little.
The next morning, Sandy found a  50 on her mirror:  "Dearest Sandy,  I want you to know being your mother is, by far, the most important thing in my life. 51_ I got your note , I thought I had lost your love and  52 .  I felt like such a failure.I intended to  53 it all last night.Your note saved my  54 .”

Since people first sent rockets into space in the 1950s, we have been leaving behind all sorts of things. Some of them, like the camera, were lost by astronauts while they did work outside their spaceship. But much of the space junk is made up of little pieces of things that were once bigger objects, until they struck each other and broke apart.
Some things we send into space fall back toward the earth and burn up in the atmosphere. But larger pieces sometimes survive the extreme heat and hit the ground or the ocean at great speeds. So there is always concern that something may fall from the sky and do some harm.
But space junk falling on housetops (屋頂) is not the biggest worry. Scientists are concerned about what happens when an empty rocket strikes another while orbiting (繞軌道飛行) the earth. Two big things become many smaller things. They then hit other things. The pieces get smaller and smaller until they form a cloud of junk that blocks the path of future space vehicles.
So what can be done to clean up the space around our planet? Marco Castronuovo, an Italian researcher, talks about sending a satellite into space that would get very close to some of the larger pieces of space junk. The satellite would connect a small rocket to the useless object. When the rocket explodes, it pushes the junk into a lower and slower orbit, nearer the earth. After a time, the junk burns up in the atmosphere.
Mr. Castronuovo has proposed (提議) using a number of small satellites with robotic arms. One arm would catch the space junk, and another arm would connect the rocket. He imagines that each satellite would jump from one large piece of junk to another. He thinks this method could destroy about ten large objects each year.
Scientists have been concerned about space junk for many years. Right now, the costs of the clean-up have been too great. Mr. Castronuovo says his system could be put in place for a much more reasonable amount of money.
小題1:Much of the space junk _____.
A.was thrown by the astronauts
B.is from broken spaceship
C.is made up of small pieces of things
D.returns to the earth piece by piece
小題2:Scientists are most worried that the space junk _____.
A.will stop the future space vehicles
B.will do harm to the atmosphere
C.will fall on the housetops
D.will burn up in space
小題3:What does Marco Castronuovo think of his system?
A.It can remove space junk completely.
B.It can save a large amount of money.
C.It can create a large amount of space.
D.It can develop robotic technology.

Back those photos up
The images were striking. Homes on the East Coast were washed away by Superstorm Sandy. People were in tears, picking up faded photographs, among their only remaining possessions.
If that doesn’t move you to get serious about safekeeping your lifetime of memories, what will? The digital age offers tools never imaginable before—including one-click access to a lifetime of family photos.
Here is a brochure on how to back up (存) your photos and save them online, where they can live forever and be accessible in good times and bad.
Scanning
The first step for those old photos is to scan them and save them to a digital format. Most printers come with scanners these days, so that’s an easy but extremely time-consuming step.
Storing the photos
With your scans in place, import the photos into your computer, and back them up.
You could make multiple copies of the disks and spread them to loved ones. Or you could choose external(外接的) hard drives or USB thumb drive, and add your photo and video collection from your computer.
Online backup
If you need lots of space, look at a pure online backup service, Caronite.
Caronite backs up 300 million files daily. Once you sign up, it starts to pick up everything you have on your hard drive. But photo collection on your computer’s main hard drive charges for $59 a year.
Cloud Storage
For folks who don’t need automatic backup, but instead want to take a more active approach, Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft’s SkyDrive let you store files online by yourself, share and instantly access them. All offer free options—2GB of free storage for Dropbox, 5GB for Google and 7GB for SkyDrive. But if you want more, you need to pay.
Bottom Line
The hard drive or flash drive is the cheapest and easiest. But drives can fail. Online services are more expensive, but more secure. With more of us switching back and forth between our computers, such services are the best way to get access to our data from wherever we are.
小題1:Why does the author mention Superstorm Sandy?
A.To tell the background of the scanning photos.
B.To attract the readers’ interest in the backups.
C.describe a severe natural disaster.
D.To win the readers’ sympathy.
小題2:What can we know from the passage?
A.Scanning photos takes little time but costs a lot.
B.Caronite charges for backing up photos from hard drive.
C.Google Drive offers unlimited free photo storage on line.
D.The hard drive or flash drive is the cheapest and safest.
小題3:Which of the following allows storing files automatically?
A.Caronite.B.Dropbox. C.SkyDrive.D.Flash drive.
小題4:What’s the passage mainly about ?
A.tell real stories about storage services
B.introduce some of the storage services
C.describe the functions of storage services
D.a(chǎn)rgue about the advantage of storage services

There are many wetlands(濕地) in China and some of them have become the world’s important wetlands. The Chinese Yellow Sea Wetlands are among them. They are in Yancheng,Jiangsu Province. They are home of many different kinds of birds and animals. The world’s largest Milu Deer Nature Reserve(自然保護區(qū)) is in them. More than 700 milu deer live freely there.
The temperature in the wetlands is usually neither too high nor too low. There is a lot of rain and sunshine, too. They are really good places for wildlife. Offering food and home for some special kinds of animals and birds is not the only reason why we need to protect wetlands.
Wetlands are important because they also prevent flood. But some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means there will be less and less space for wildlife.
Luckily, more and more people are beginning to realize the important of wetlands and wildlife. Every year, on February 2nd many activities are held to tell people more about wetlands around the world.

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image(形象) of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.
An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. "We were surprised by just how positive today's young people seem to be about their families," said one member of the research team. "They're expected to be rebellious(叛逆的) and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There's more negotiation(商議) and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don't want to rock the boat."
So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. "My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me," says 17-years-old Daniel Lazall. " I always tell them when I'm going out clubbing. As long as they know what I'm doing, they're fine with it." Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. "Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I'd done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that."
Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments, "Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over."

Chicken feathers are useful, and not just to a chicken. Some go into pillows, coats and other products. But countless chicken feathers go to waste.
In the United States, billions of chickens are produced yearly. Most of their feathers are thrown away.
But instead of being buried in land, some feathers could find a future in plastics(塑料).
One of the products they have developed is a flowerpot(花盆). It may look like other flowerpots. But the container breaks down in the earth within one to five years. And as it breaks down, it naturally becomes nutrient(營養(yǎng)物) in the soil.
The environmentally friendly flowerpot is the work of two researchers. Walter Schmidt is with the Agricultural Research Service, part of the United States Agriculture Department. Masud Huda is with the Horticultural Research Institute, a private(私人) organization(組織).
Walter Schmidt has been working to find uses for chicken feathers since the 1990s. Progress in 2002 showed that plastic made from feathers could be formed like other plastics.
He says feathers are much stronger and last(持續(xù)) longer than another plant material. "Feathers are stronger. By design, feathers are also more durable(耐用的). And the other part about it is if feathers were twice as heavy, or half as strong, then birds couldn't fly."
He points out that traditional flowerpots made from other plastics can last much longer. But he wonders if there is really a need. He says most flowerpots are never re-used.
"Why would you want a plastic that you use for a year to last for two hundred years? It makes no sense. You want to match the product with the use." said Walter Schmidt.
Walter Schmidt and Masud Huda are now adding another chicken product to their flowerpots -- chicken waste. The waste will add more nutrients to the soil as the pot breaks down. The scientists say they hope their flowerpot will be on the market in a year or two.
小題1:What do people mainly deal with feathers?

A.They won’t last long. B.They can’t break
C.They are environmentally friendlyD.They can be reused
小題3:What does Walter Schmidt think of traditional flowerpots?
A.Too heavyB.Too old
C.Never re-usedD.lasting longer but unnecessary
小題4:What do you think is the main idea of the passage?
A.Chicken and its feathersB.How to deal with feathers
C.feathers made into flowerpotD.New flowerpots

The human body has hundreds of muscles. The three types are skeletal(骨骼的) muscles, smooth muscles and cardiac, or heart muscles. Each kind of muscle has a special job to do.
The skeletal muscles are attached to the bones; they actually hold the skeleton together. Strong cords, called tendons(肌腱), help connect these muscles to the bones. Skeletal muscles give us strength and allow us to move in many ways. If you look at skeletal muscles through a microscope, you will see that it has bands of fibers that look like stripes(條紋). These stripes are called striations. Skeletal muscles usually move because the brain has sent a conscious message to them telling them what to do. This is called voluntary movement.
Another type of muscle is smooth muscle. Unlike skeletal muscle, smooth muscle does not have striations. This is found in organs such as the stomach, the bladder(膀胱), the lungs and the eyes. Smooth muscles are smaller than the skeletal muscles and they move involuntarily. The brain tells these muscles what to do, but we aren’t even aware of it. For example, we don’t have to think about breathing or digesting food. The smooth muscles just do their jobs automatically. For this reason smooth muscles are sometimes called involuntary muscles.
Like smooth muscle, cardiac muscle also works involuntarily. It is a very thick muscle that is found only in the walls of the heart. Its job is to pump blood out of the heart and into blood vessels called arteries(動脈). The arteries help carry the blood to all parts of the body. When the cardiac muscles relax, they let blood back into the heart. Cardiac muscles have striations, just like skeletal muscles do.
小題1:When we _______, the job is done by smooth muscles.
A.close our eyesB.kick a ballC.hug our friendsD.lift a suitcase
小題2:Skeletal muscles and heart muscles are alike because_______.
A.both can move voluntarily
B.both are thick muscles
C.both are bigger than smooth muscles
D.both have stripes called striations
小題3:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Heart muscles are very important because they give us strength and allow us to move.
B.The heart of human beings completely consists of heart muscle.
C.The skeletal muscles are connected to the bones by tendons.
D.Smooth muscle does its work without receiving message from the brain.

Alan Izhar-Bodner, an Israeli inventor, has developed a swimming suit for divers to breathe underwater without carrying heavy oxygen tanks. His suit makes use of the air that is dissolved(溶解)in water, just like fish do.
The system uses the Henry Law which states that the amount of gas that can be dissolved in a liquid is proportional (成比例的)to the pressure on the liquid. Raise the pressure ---more gas can be dissolved in the liquid. Decrease the pressure --- less gas dissolved in the liquid releases the gas. This is exactly what happens when you open a can of soda; carbon dioxide gas is dissolved in the liquid and is under pressure in the can. Open the can, releasing the pressure, and the gas fizzes(嘶撕作響)out.
Bodner's System obviously uses a special machine to lower pressure in part of a small amount of seawater taken into the system; dissolved gas is taken out. The patent(專利)reads: A self-contained open-circuit(循環(huán))breathing instrument for use within a body of water naturally containing dissolved air. The instrument is adapted to provide breathable(可吸入的)air. The instrument contains an inlet for taking out a quantity of water from the body of water. It further contains a separator for separating the dissolved air from the quantity of water, thus gaining the breathable air. The instrument further contains an outlet for expelling (驅(qū)逐)the separated water back into the body of water, and another outlet for removing the breathable air and supplying it for breathing. The air is supplied so as to enable it to be expelled back into the body of water after it has been breathed .
Human beings have been thinking about how to breathe underwater since they started swimming. This long-held desire plays an important part in one of the first great science fiction novels, Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
小題1:It can be inferred from the passage that____________ .
A.the less pressure it is, the less carbon dioxide gas is dissolved in the liquid
B.the deeper one dives into the ocean, the less gas is dissolved in the water
C.the greater pressure it is, the more carbon dioxide gas is dissolved in the liquid
D.the deeper one dives into the ocean, the more gas is dissolved in the water
小題2:This passage is mainly about __________.
A.how Bodner invented the instrument for breathing underwater
B.why Bodner invented the instrument for breathing underwater
C.how Bodner's instrument for breathing underwater works
D.how Bodner's instrument is used by divers for breathing underwater
小題3:From the passage we learn that __________.
A.a(chǎn) separator is used to expel breathable air back into the body of water
B.a(chǎn) separator is used to separate the air from the water so as to make use of the water
C.The breathable air removed from an outlet will eventually go back to the body of water.
D.The breathable air removed from an outlet will immediately go back to the body of water.

Parents who feel disappointed at their teenagers’ failure to pay attention in class, and inability to sit quietly long enough to finish homework or plan ahead, should take solace. Their children are not being lazy or careless, according to new research.
The research has found that teenagers’ brains continue developing far longer into adulthood than we used to think. Teens may look like young adults but their brain structure is similar to that of much younger children.
“It is not always easy for teens to pay attention in class without letting their minds wander, or to ignore distractions from their younger brothers or sisters when trying to solve a maths   problem,” said Dr Iroise Dumon-theil. “But it’s not the fault of teenagers that they can’t pay attention and are easily distracted. It’s to do with the structure of their brains. Teens simply can’t think as well as an adult.”
The research showed that the brain of a teenager works less effectively than that of an adult. “We knew that the front of the brain of teens functioned in a chaotic  (混亂的) way but we  didn’ t realize it continued until the late 20s or early 30s,” said Dr Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, who led the research.
Chaotic thought patterns are a result of teenagers’ brains containing too much grey matter — the cell bodies and connections which carry messages within the brain. As we age, the amount of grey matter in our brain reduces.
“What our research has shown is that there is simply too much going on in the brains of teens,” said Blakemore. “The result is that their brain energy and resources are wasted and their decision-making process is badly influenced. Adults, on the other hand, have less grey matter. This means that the brain works far more effectively.”
小題1:The underlined word “solace” in Paragraph 1 may mean _____.
A. noticeB.medicineC.comfortD.a(chǎn)ction
小題2:When making decisions, _____.
A.teens’ brains continue to do much needless work
B.the grey matter in young children’s front brain becomes active
C.people are not likely to be distracted until their late 30s
D.a(chǎn)dults are more independent than teens
小題3:What is the effect of having too much grey matter?
A.It makes us always feel disappointed.
B.It makes us more intelligent.
C.It had a bad effect on the growth of teens.
D.It had a bad effect on decision-making.
小題4:What’s the text mainly about?
A.Teens have different brains from those of children.
B.Adults work more effectively than teens.
C.Grey matter makes teens unable to pay attention.
D.Brain energy is wasted in the brain’s activity.
