A passenger told an air hostess that he needed a cup of water to take his medicine when the plane
just took off. She told him that she would bring him the water in ten minutes.
Thirty minutes later, when the passenger's ring for service sounded, the air hostess flew in a flurry
(慌了神). She was kept so busy that she forgot to deliver him the water. As a result, the passenger
was held up (耽誤)to take his medicine. She hurried over to him with a cup of water, but he refused it.
In the following hours on the flight, each time the air hostess passed the passenger she would ask
him with a smile whether he needed help or not. But the passenger never paid heed(理睬) to her. When
he was going to get off the plane, the passenger asked the air hostess to hand him the passengers'
booklet (留言本). She was very sad. She knew that he would write down sharp words, but with a
smile she handed it to him.
Off the plane, she opened the booklet, and cracked a smile, for the passenger put it, “On the flight,
you asked me whether I need help or not for twelve times in all. How can I refuse your twelve sincere
smiles?”

One possible version:
An air hostess failed to meet a passenger's requirement, which made him very angry. Although the
passenger refused to pay heed to the air hostess, she still served him politely with a smile. Her sincere
smile touched the passenger, who finally chose to forgive her.
From where I stand, I am fully convinced that smiles play a significant role in our lives. To start with,
a smile is a relief to one's anxiety. Besides, a smiling face never fails to cheer up those around us.
For me, the smile from my mother is the most beautiful one that I will always treasure in my life.
Once I failed in a math exam, which made me very sad,I had been crying for a whole afternoon since
math was always my best subject. Knowing what had happened, mom came by my side. What I saw
was mom's sincere smile, the one telling me not to give up and encouraging me to go on fighting.
As the old Chinese saying goes, a smile makes a person become younger. A smile costs none but
means a lot. Please have a smile.

    The elephant and the fly

A disciple(信徒), who was disturbed by the fact that his mind was in constant unrest, asked his teacher, “Why are most people's minds restless? What can one do to still the mind? ” The teacher looked at the disciple, smiled and told him a story:

An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree.A small fly came, flying and buzzing(嗡嗡叫)near his ear.The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again, and the elephant waved it away once more.

This was repeated several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and noisy? Why can't you stay for a while in one place? ”

The fly answered, “I am attracted to whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses pull me constantly in all directions and I cannot resist them. What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still? ”

The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule my attention.Whatever I do, I get immersed in it.Now that I am eating, I am completely absorbed in eating. In this way I can enjoy my food and chew it better.I rule and control my attention, and not the other way around.”

Upon hearing these words, a smile appeared on the disciple's face, “I understand! If my five senses are in control of my mind and attention, then my mind is in constant unrest. If I am in charge of my five senses and attention, then my mind becomes calm.”

    Dear Jane,
My dear daughter, do you know how shocked I was to be told that you have chosen to be a
journalist? A short, slim and weak girl like you should take such a job as her career! Do you know
how worried I am? Do you still remember your dear Uncle Danny, my handsome and wise younger
brother? The insightful and strong willed journalist honored in the press circle, was sent to report
what was happening in the Middle East. He left with a strong sense of duty but never returned home.
We did not get the news until 4 months after his death, and his ashes until 2 years later. I was crying
my heart out with you in my arms...
You are only 18 years old and never old enough to make such a hasty decision for your life. Let’ s
try to see what you have. You are learning as one of the top students in a school famous all over the
country. You can choose to go to an ideal university without sitting for the exam. You are now one of
the masters among your contemporaries. Just think of 4 years later when you graduate from an
excellent university and, I am sure, many good jobs are waiting for you, but not to be a journalist. I
am so proud of you and you have been my hope in my heart since your father’ s death. I would not
like to be alone when my only daughter finishes college and works for a job that totally fails to give me
    a sense of security.
         Jane, think about it carefully.

    讀寫任務(wù)。
    閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。
When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever
known. When Dr. Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees.
The good doctor had some interesting theories concerning planting trees. He believed in "No pains, no
gains". He never watered his new trees, which was beyond many people. Once I asked why. He answered
that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each following tree generation will grow weaker
and weaker. So you have to make things tough for them. He talked about how watering trees made for shallow
roots, and how trees that weren't watered had to grow deep roots in search of water. I took him to mean that
deep roots were to be treasured.
So he never watered his trees. He'd plant an oak (橡樹) and, instead of watering it every morning, he'd
beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to
    get the tree's attention.
Dr. Gibbs passed away a couple of years after I left home. Every now and again, I walked by his house
and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They're extremely tall, big
and strong now. Those trees wake up in the morning and beat their chests and drink their coffee black.

    讀寫任務(wù)。
         閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。
Jackie is perhaps the most easily annoyed koala (考拉) at the Featherdale Wildlife Park in southern
Australia. All the koalas there are unhappy and complaining. You would be too if you were used to night
activities and someone kept waking you up all day while you were trying to sleep it off. That's right-sleep
it off. The average koala is always half asleep because it feeds on the leaves of a special kind that makes
    it sleepy.
The reason Jackie and her fellow koalas are repeatedly awoken from their deep sleep is so they can be
hugged and photographed by tourists, who make the trips to Featherdale and an increasing number of other
national parks for just that special experience. Whatever department in the Aussie government in charge of
such things is now moving to make the practice illegal, which is understandable. How would you react, my
friend, if you were trying to sleep off a dozen times and some round, furry creature smelling of grass kept
    waking you?
