I’m glad to hear of you. You asked me about the difficulties you may meet with when you arrive at here in the USA. Now I’d like to tell you everything about it.

First, you may have problems about the language that you think you had learned so well. You may find difficult to communicate with the native, because many of them have a strong accent. Beside, you may not get used to the western food here or even hate to have it. What’s more, you may feel lonely and miss your family and friend, especially in a very beginning.

However, you needn’t worry about it. Several weeks late, you will get used to everything here and get to love the place, but I’ll also try my best to help you when necessary.

【答案】

【解析】1.句意:我和高興受到你的來信。hear from收到某人的來信,故把of---from。

固定詞組:in the beginning在開始,故在in后加the。

9.句意:幾周之后。故把late---later。

10.句意:幾周之后你會喜歡這里,并且我也會幫助你。此處表示遞進關(guān)系,故把but---and。

【題目】Do you love Beats headphones, True Religion jeans, and UGG shoes? These are some of the most popular brands (牌子) around. They are also expensive. But some experts say they are not much better than cheaper brands.

For example, Jim Wilcox works for Consumer Reports. He tested all kinds of headphones. He says that $80 Koss Pro headphones provide basically the same quality (質(zhì)量) and comfort as Beats. So why do people pay twice or even 10 times as much for the hottest brands?

Experts say it’s because fashionable, expensive brands send a message. Brands say “I belong” or “I can afford it.”

Some people think that expensive brand names are worth the price. They say that some designer clothes really are top quality and that they last longer than cheaper brands. Some teenagers choose to wear popular brands because these brands make them feel good about themselves.

Alexandra Allam, 17, likes to buy brand-name products. “I’d rather spend the extra money to get something I know I’ll be satisfied with,” she says. Her friend Emmy Swan agrees, saying “As long as you can afford it, it seems reasonable to buy what you want.” But not all teenagers agree. “Spending hundreds of dollars for designer sunglasses is stupid and unreasonable,” says Daniel Steinbrecher, 16. “It’s fake (假的) happiness.”

People who are against wearing expensive brand names say that many designer brands aren’t any better. “It’s wasteful to buy things just because they are popular,” says Edmund Williams, 15. “You’ll feel better if you buy things because you like them. If you have extra money to spend, it would be better to give it to people in need.”

1Who have the same opinion on expensive brands?

A. Alexandra & Daniel. B. Emmy & Edmund.

C. Daniel & Emmy. D. Emmy & Alexandra.

2What does Edmund think of expensive brands?

A. They make him feel confident.

B. They are not worth the price.

C. They need to improve their quality.

D. They pay too much attention to personal likes.

3The text is mainly about _____.

A. how to buy things reasonably

B. the competition between brands

C. whether expensive brands are worth high prices

D. the different values of teenagers

【題目】

Dressing against the cold is hard when you're a 6,000-pound elephant. But thanks to some generous knitters (編織者) in Mathura, India, a group of elephants have giant handmade sweaters to help them stay warm during the cold winter. When worn with their bright red leg coverings, their new outfits look like comfortable nightclothes for them!

The huge sweaters were made for elephants at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center. It takes care of 20 blind, lame, or injured elephants. They were saved from abuse (虐待). Some lived in circuses, some were bought and sold illegally, and some were not receiving enough care. In India, elephants are sometimes kept in crowded inner cities and used in street performances or for begging. This causes physical and emotional harm to the wild animals. Wildlife SOS provides food, care, and medical attention to those animals.

Because most of the elephants housed at the center are recovering from injuries or are elderly, “it is important to keep our elephants protected from the bitter cold during this extreme winter,” explains Kartick Satyanarayan, the co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS. “They are weak and vulnerable (脆弱的), having suffered so much abuse, making it easy for them to catch diseases such aspneumonia(lung infection). The cold also worsens theirarthritis(關(guān)節(jié)炎), which is a common issue that our saved elephants have to deal with.”

At first, Wildlife SOS made giant jackets out of tarp (防水帆布) for the elephants to wear. Then they asked people in nearby villages to help out by making colorful knitted sweaters. Knitting the sweaters is a big undertaking. Each one takes about four weeks to create, with volunteers working together on the very large sweaters. Wildlife SOS hopes to save 50 more elephants this year — which means there could be a lot more knitting to do!

1What can we learn about the knitted sweaters for elephants?

A. They are made of tarp.

B. They are all in bright red.

C. They are made entirely by hand.

D. They are designed for the elderly.

2What do the 20 elephants who dress in huge sweaters have in common?

A. They are all good at street performances.

B. They all weigh over 6,000 pounds.

C. They were all found in the wild.

D. They were all badly treated.

3What does Kartick Satyanarayan mainly explain?

A. The current situation of elephants in India.

B. The possibility of better protecting elephants.

C. The necessity of making sweaters for elephants.

D. The reason why Wildlife SOS rescues elephants.

Every fast-food employee knows that the drive-through window is the worst position. The window sticks with constant ice; the roar of engines hurts your 1; your words are lost in the howling wind.

【題目】閱讀理解

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項 (A 、B 、C D )中,選出最佳選項。

In 1841, a book was published which astonished the world. It was called “Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan”. The author John Loud Stephens had just returned from a long, difficult and dangerous journey through the thick rain forest of southern Mexico and Guatemala. He had once been there with Frederick Catherwood, an architect and artist, to search for the remains of a lost civilization known as the Mayas(瑪雅). Very little was known about the Mayas at that time, but Catherwood's drawing in the book showed incredible cities with temples, pyramids and other buildings as impressive as those of their northern neighbors, the Aztecs. These cities, however, were deserted. The inhabitants(居民) had disappeared almost a thousand years before.

Since that time, far more has been learned about this remarkable civilization. The Mayas had a highly-developed system of government and of agriculture, as well as an incredibly accurate system of measuring time. They were also wonderful engineers capable of moving huge blocks stone long distances and cutting them to accurate shapes and sizes.

And yet although the Mayas knew about the wheel, they never used it. Neither did they use metals other than copper. What is ever more surprising is that they suddenly abandoned many of their cities and built new ones in the jungle. Some time around AD 900, Mayan civilization collapsed(崩潰). By the year 1200, their last great capital, Itza, was deserted.

Who were these strange people and the even stranger gods they worshipped? What brought about their sudden and mysterious collapse? Some writers have tried to prove that the Mayas had contact with visitors from space and even that they themselves came from another planet. Some people believe that their civilization came to an end because the Mayas never developed a proper resistance to local germs and diseases. All we really know is that when the first Europeans appeared off their coast in 1517, this great and mysterious culture was only a memory.
