The city of Rome has passed a new law to prevent cruelty to animals. All goldfish bowls are no longer allowed and dog owners must walk their dogs.

This comes after a national law was passed to give prison sentences to people who desert cats or dogs.

“The civilization of a city can be measured by this,”said Monica Cirinna, the councilor(議員)belind the new law.

“It’s good to do whatever we can for our animals who in exchange for a little love fill our existence with their attention,” she told a Rome newspaper.

The newspaper reported that round bowls don’t give enough oxygen for fishand may make them go blind.

Rome has tried to protect fish more than anywhere else in the world. It stand out for recognizing that fish are interesting animals who deserve(值得) our respect and compassion every bit as much as dogs and cats and other animals,” said Karin Robertson, a director of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Last year a law was passed in ltaly that gives people who desert pets big fines(罰款) and prson sentences. Since then local governments have added their own animal protection rules.

The northern city of Turin passed a law in April to give pet owners fines of up to $598 if they do not walk their dogs three times a day.

The new law in Rome also says that owners mustn’t leave their dogs in hot cars or cut their dogs’ tails to make them look lovelier. The law also gives legal recognition to the “cat ladies” who feed homeless cats .the cats live all over the city from ancient ruins to modern office car parks.

My first marathon!

Last year, my boyfriend suggested that I should run the London marathon, and I laughed. He laughed too,  21  he laughed too long and too loud. That made me think. I  22  that he didn’t believe that I could do it. That made me angry, but  23 .

On the day of the race in London, I  24  up with about 30,000 other runners. The faster runners were at the  25 , while slower runners like me were  26  further back. In that way, the professional runners and club runners were not  27  down by the amateurs(業(yè)余者).

At first, there were so many  28  close together that we were almost falling  29  each other. We could  30  run very slowly but that was a good thing because it meant that we didn’t rush off too quickly. Gradually the runners  31  out and there was more space. There were thousands of people  watching us along the route and they  32  clapped everyone, even the slowest runner. It was wonderful!

For the first 10km I felt very happy and my legs felt very  33  . However, at 15km I got a pain in my  34  and running became difficult, but I kept going and the pain disappeared. At the 30km  35  , I felt extremely tired, and wanted to stop ,but I kept on going. I  36  an other 3km and then I began to feel better again.

When I finished 35km, I knew I was going to get to the end of the course. Somehow that  37  made me feel lighter and faster and it seemed as if my legs  38  over the  last few kilometers. Finally I came round the last  39  and saw the finishing line. I finished the race in just under four hours. The winner had completed the race in 2 hours and 10 minutes, but I didn’t  40  ! had run 42km and completed my first marathon!
